I think Rooney will be remembered as a great simply because of the records he will hold. Whether he was world class or not won't even come into the debate.

Yeah, that's why I didn't include him in the list of not memorable yet excellent strikers, his records make the difference but he wasn't better than Tevez.

That's Sammy McIlroy.
thanks for clarifying, my memory does not go that far, anyway he's off like so many other people. On the other hand it could be hard to react quickly for such unexpected question for most of the former and current players..

I think Messi for one probably still thinks Rooney is great and could help them win some titles, would add something else etc... as nobody really cares about watching United these days, it's just us fans who have to see every game, that's how big reputation he has and how much he lives from the past. It has to stop this season, because if he keeps playing I am sure we will miss on Champions league again just because of him that's how shit he is now... and nobody is taking away from how good he used to be ffs

As much as the Caf is pretty much in a chorus of agreement for once over Rooney' shitness, you just know if he pops up with a goal over the next five games or so, there will be some saying ''I told you he isn't done'' and we go around the merry go round yet again. Let's not pretend we haven't been here before is all I'm saying, which is why I'd much prefer Jose to do a Pep and completely banish him from the squad as he did Bastian.

Pretty sure it was a similar poll doen by Red Issue.

Ours was mentioned but red issues got 99% of the coverage.

What is written on the tweet? Can't see it here.

It was a guy called Keith telling mutv how we all feel about Rooney and the pundits just claiming he was great for the club and said caller saying, exactly, was!

At least we can be fairly confident that he won't be starting the Leicester game this weekend with him starting last night and putting in yet another poor showing. I think even Jose now sees what is clear now that he's nowhere close to good enough to be first choice. I'm hoping that carrick and Herrera did enough to prove to Mourinho that they should be starting after excellent performances last night so we go with a midfield 3 of carrick behind Herrera and pogba.

Only chance of him playing is on one of the wings but with zlatan and Rashford guaranteed starters that only leaves one position and young or Mata should be more likely to play.

Of course you do realise that if he is dropped the cameras will be focused on his miserable face the whole game on Saturday and telling everyone how badly done to he is.

Rooney has massively declined over the last 2-3 years but even by his standards, the last two games were appalling.

Watching last night I felt someone had given Gabrial Obertan the captaincy and a license to roam. His performances on the pitch are getting mor amateurish.

Well, he has said that Rooney will outlast Mourinho, finish his career here and in the future become United's manager.
As mad as nick can be, I wouldn't bet against his conclusion. Besides, even now, I wonder whether the answer to the Rooney-selection debate is a simple one: maybe José just favours players who put in a shift.

I doubt just putting in a shift is enough to impress a manager with a CV as impressive as Jose's.

Rooney is very inarticulate and not the most intelligent ever to become United's manager.

So was Moyes though, so maybe nick is right.

Would love to hear whether @nick2004 feels he should be dropped?

He was missing from yesterday's matchday thread.
In his absence I took over cheer leading duties and had to spout BS about how good Rooney was playing yesterday. :D

I think Nick2004 watched the match and was horrified that Rooney could not handle League One opposition, so he has gone quiet.

For me Rooney was a world class player from 2007. He didn't get the goals Ronaldo did. 20 in 2007, 23 in 08, 17 in 09 but he was delivering class performances. Remember played majority of that period on the wing. Between 2007 and 2010, there aren't many attackers I wold have had ahead of him.

Not this again. It's absolute nonsense, there was no season where Rooney played majority of games on the wing. He plays wide in a handful of games in a few seasons, which was used for years as evidence of his 'sacrifice' and magnified to 'years of playing on the wing'.

As you say the fact he could not even score against Northampton Town, even Michael Carrick scored against them and his goals are precious they are that rare.

Beckham and Ronaldo played on the wings, didn't stop them scoring. I know he isn't really a winger, but if he is not capable of contributing up front, he shouldn't be playing.

I sat there opened mouthed last night watching MUTV. Wonder what he told the researcher his call was going to be about when he rang in?

I've no idea but poor Sammy didn't have a thing to say.

"We can't keep talking about the Rooney of years ago, Robson was a great player but he couldn't do it now, it's now that matters"

"you've obviously not seen what he's done over his career"

"that's exactly my point, you keep talking about history, not the here and now"

"errrmmmm, next caller"

Of course he fecking shouldn't be playing. It's become beyond ridiculous, how many times are we going to change his position in order to keep him in the team? As if he HAS to be in it anyway.

That ridiculous contract he and Stretford managed to syphon out of United is one of the worst things we have done for many a year.

Amazing call!

'You can't overlook what he's done for United and England'

Well you fecking can because what matters is what he delivers at the moment and that's fecking nothing, zero, null, nada. Thick pundits, 'experts' and other shite can feck off, deluded brown nosing cocks who don't give a shit about a club they played for once but about their pal who's holding the club by the balls, being a complete contradiction to values it was built on.

The way they dealt with it has actually made things 10 times worse as it is now all over social media and the press. They will be making sure nobody gets a chance to ring in. I have actually seem them do that. After midweek games there is only a small phone in slot then Matchday review. I am convinced if they think there will be problems they just talk and talk to minimize the amount of phone calls coming in.

Oh, thank you my friend.

The England bit as well. Yes he has scored a lot of goals, but in tournaments he has been woeful. When it matters he doesn't deliver.

I think he is Rooney! There is no other explanation.

He has 604 club games to his name and 116
caps for England, the kind of miles on the
clock you would expect from a player of 34 or
35, not one who does not turn 31 for another
month.

I'm glad more and more articles are pointing out this fact. Father time has simply caught up with him. I fear that OT will turn on him if he starts against Leicester, people are very frustrated with him.

Funny enough, I actually think Wayne will make a good manager, win a trophy even. Ferguson was always relaying info to him during games.

I used to think the same, not so sure anymore.

All managers who are even decent tend to speak well. And by that I don't mean they're 'well-spoken', rather they express their opinions very well and display a level of conversational intelligence and wit.

Rooney literally sounds like a robot in comparison with, say, Pardew or Steve Bruce.

But who knows, maybe he'll be a good manager.

Yeh but I think we can put on a real show if (and it's a big if) he can pick the correct team. Carrick simply has to play for us to function and I don't see us getting better until we play either carrick or blind in the DM role. If the team performs well and wins then Jose will have got his golden ticket to leave Rooney out.

What's his done in his career means he's earned our respect and shouldn't be slagged off on a personal level for his current woes which frankly signal the end. But I fear this is where it's getting to with a lot of people. This insinuation that he shouldn't be dropped because of his achievements is bollocks. This ain't no 3 game skid he's on.
