Rooney Charged: Faces Two Match Ban for cursing | Appeal lost

In the US, we occasionally hear choice words when cameras come up close to players. But there's never any media outrage seeking fines and/or suspensions. And we're a far more PC country than most.
I remember there was a tiny uproar when a NBA player swore during a post game interview. Some people were upset, but the vast majority of people realized that's what happens when you talk to someone right after a game.

Michael Irvin drew some criticism after his "He takes all the shit" comment regarding Barry Switzer after the 1995 NFC Championship Game. But much of that was because it was Michael Irvin, who anyone that wasn't a Cowboys fan couldn't stand (and this was a few weeks prior to this hotel/stripper bust). Had that been Emmitt or Troy or Moose it wouldn't have drawn as much criticism.

Reggie White was swearing and acting a lunatic during the final seconds of that same game and nothing was mentioned about his actions. But he was a fan favorite and a pastor.

FA expected to hand Manchester United's Wayne Rooney a severe reprimand following F-word controversy - Telegraph

I just don't get this. If its anything concerning United, they will just go off, the FA. Harry Redknapp said 'feck off' in a TV interview when the interviewer said he was a wheeler and a dealer. I did not see the FA punish him. He did not say it only once. He said the f word at least four times. Are these cnuts so biased against United?

Ummm, Joe Kinnear can trump that one. The FA didn't take any action on that one, despite there being 50(seriously) more swears than Rooney. It's not in a match, but neither were Fergie's comments about Atkinson. The FA can do one.

Jesus Christ.....that is about as clear cut as it gets: two feet off the ground, nowhere near the ball, and no attempt to get the ball.

Can you imagine if any United player had done that

A fine would still be too much in my opinion, but a ban would be absolutely ludicrous. From what I can remember, there's absolutely no precedent set for this sort of thing by the FA. They'd just be making it up as they go, which is already the MO sadly.

I've yet to see that tackle mentioned anywhere aside from here. I checked all the papers, MOTD thread, and gameday thread. How was it missed?

I see that rent a quote buffoon Graham Poll has weighed in asking for a three game ban. I really really try to like him but he makes it difficult and I just know that when Chapmans podcast comes out later today the rest of the people on it will be rimming Poll also calling for a ban.

I love how he's having the 'Respect' campaign thrown at him. Who precisely in the game of football has he disrespected?

Respect is the collective responsibility of everyone involved in football to create a fair, safe and enjoyable environment in which the game can take place.

That's from the campaign's website. Was what he did unfair? No. Unsafe? No. Did it ruin the enjoyment of others in the game? No.

Unless they're trying to argue that everyone watching from home is also a part of the game. Which is absolute bollocks.

 Yeah I'd forgotten about that.

But that's alright because it was in a post game interview. Or something. And Redknapp is England's saviour.

That's one of the weirdest tackles I've seen. Why did Essien ground his left foot flat if his body was on the way down for a slide tackle?

Then I don't really know what happened. I don't think it's a red to be honest but it could've been given.

I love the way MotD did the whole "what would kids watching think?" spiel after showing it time and again. If it's that bad, why're you showing it repeatedly for more kids to see you muppets?

If the FA take any further action more than a warning Wayne should come out and tell them he's done with England. See how that goes down with the FA.

A 3 match ban for what he said is correct, when you have the history of recieving as many warnings as Ferguson has then they will catch up with you.

It's a 5 match ban since they had the option not to invoke the extra 2 games but, chose to anyway in order to make an example of him since he is such a high profile figure. The guy on the panel making the decision said as much.

Tomorrow when they make the decision to impose some sort of ban, we'll see the same thing being said, Rooney should know better being in the limelight. FA doesn't apply their rules the same regardless of of the offender - they take into account the person.

So they will reprimand him just because he said in a match? I mean so in an interview if Rooney said at the end 'Cheers and feck off' to the camera, he won't be reprimanded?

Again just because it is an interview, it does not mean you can anything. If someone says feck off to the camera after answering every question, is it alright?

the camera doesn't bug me as much as the microphone does. with all the mics around the stadium/pitch to pick up the general sounds of the game, there isn't a need for one on these cameras. it's asking for trouble. they wouldn't put one in the crowd that any idiot could spew into, or on the ref so we can all hear what he's being subjected to, so why have one on this camera that's going to probably be in the face of some player. sky should be held responsible for this going out on the airwaves.

That is another good way of seeing the situation. I hate it when players kiss the camera or blabber something into the camera when they celebrate or after the game when we can't really hear anything. Or players might get hurt if they don't see the camera behind them like Heinze in the World Cup.

there are still people who insist there is no abu media after the deafening silence re: the Chelsea debacle the other week - then Essien comes up with a potential leg-breaker and like the Carragher incident there is nothing said whatsoever in condemnation of the player - yet look at the stink kicked up over Rooney's Wigan elbow, and now this. The FA are led by the nose with the media pulling the strings. Has been that way for years.

I'm not sure it's ABU so much as Rooney being someone who the tabloids love to write about. Future England captain, the white Pele, granny-shagger, boozing, smoking, pregnant wife upsetting and all the rest. He's tabloid gold.

The problem here is not the media agenda - which nobody can change - it's the way the FA dances to their tune. This bollox about allowing the press to dictate what incidents do and don't get retrospectively investigated has to stop. It's absurd and incredibly unfair.

Yeah, to endorse your point Rooney got a five-match ban for the elbow from the media-led FA.

I know he brings a fair bit of this upon himself - I mean wtf he had to "celebrate" in that manner I'll never know but if he had made the "tackle" that either Carragher or Essien made........... well, I think you know the answer. He is tabloid gold partly because of his stupid exploits but partly because they seek to make a song and dance over the slightest wrongdoing. He becomes news because they build him up and hang him out to dry. Can anyone say those two tackles (Carragher and Essien) were not newsworthy? They could've justifiably kicked up a stink and had their ongoing "story". It's the selectiveness that needs addressing. Having said that, you're perfectly on the money that we'll never change the hacks and it really is up to the spineless oafs, the FA, to show some judgement and balls.

I remember Fergie saying "that's bollocks" in response to Geoff Shreeves suggesting his job was under threat after we beat Chelsea at OT a few years back. You'd have thought something like that would have been considered worse given that it was post match but no action was taken. As it won't be this time, I suspect.

Unbelievable that some people are still equating this to the Drogba incident (6 game ban). It's not the same thing at all, Drogba received his ban for calling the referee an effing disgrace down the camera, thereby questioning his integrity.

Then you've got others on radio phone-ins suggesting United should be docked points, when was that rule introduced?

Finally, we have John Cross of the Mirror (Arsenal fan) saying that this will cause kids up and down the country to start swearing as part of their goal celebrations.

I remember Richards swearing in an interview after scoring a goal. Don't remember anyone mentioning that either.

In the early days of Sky they did! I had an early surround sound setup and it was brilliant hearing all the usual tossers shouting their abuse and worthless opinions during a a game. You could literally hear every shout. Didn't take sky long to 'muffle' the crowd noise and remove the microphones from the stands. Funny as feck while it lasted though. Shame really that the PC brigade didn't hear all the Rooney abuse from Saturday.

well, have they done him yet? - must be a big one - taking their time

we'll be ok with Berbatov and Hernandez

To be perfectly fair, I believe the FA did 'look into' the incident where Gerrard flicked the V's at the ref as he was being booked, but no action was taken there and I doubt very much it will be now.

He was out of order,he knows that the club knows that but some trying to turn it into a United witch hunt

They will write him a nice letter asking him to behave in future.

It's as some have mentioned, Rooney is tabloid gold at present.More objective journos have pointed out that there were more important points out there worth discussing
