Ronaldo's dad died last night.

This is terrible news for him. To lose a parent at such a young age. I feel sorry for him. Hope he and his family cope well and get through this tragic time. I hope he gets a few weeks off also to spend time with his family and mourn the death of their father.

RIP :frown: Hopefully there will be some kind of gesture from the other players (eg black armbands, or dedicated goals) in the City game

and the fans too. it'd be nice when they see him to let him know that the fans also care.

condolences Ronaldo.

:( Condolences to him and his family.

I hope the City fans behave themselves, I don't expect them to though.

Portugal have confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will still play in the World Cup qualifier against Russia despite the sad death of his father.

The Manchester United winger may miss the derby clash with local rivals City on Saturday but is to take his place in the Portugal side for Wednesday's fixture.

The FPF, Portugal's footballing federation, issued a statement confirming that the decision to play had been taken after talks with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Dinis Aveiro died in London on Tuesday after being hospitalised with liver and kidney problems and United have already stressed their thoughts are with the ex-Sporting wide man at this difficult time.

Ronaldo had informed O Jogo that he was looking forward to tackling Russia in a key game for his country.

"I am 200 percent ready!" he claimed. "I am well enough and ready to help the team.

"It's a decisive game and difficult for us and for the Russians.

"We are used to hostile environments.

"We have an excellent team, we have excellent players and what we all want is to win."

Ronaldo is a tough lad.

Ive never lost anyone like a father but do you think Ronaldo would want to get back to football as soon as possible. When my Dad lost his Mum he wanted to get back to life as normal as quick as possible because it would make my Nan wouldnt have wanted him to drop everything. I dont know if this makes sense but he may want to get on with things. I feel really sorry for the lad i really do.

RIP

Ronnie, the thoughts and condolances of Manchester United fans everywhere are with you and your family. May your dad RIP

Seconded. I feel so sorry for him, let's just hope he gets the time off he needs before returning to action.

This will undoubtedly hit him hard, especially as he was apparently close to his dad. I'm sure he'll get time off if he wants it, but judging by his attitude to the Russia game, it seems he wants to get on with his football immediately, perhaps dedicate some success to his father.

My condolences goes out to Ronaldo. I wouldn't blame him if he took some time off from the football right now but it seems like the lad is determined to get back to everyday life as fast as possible.

RIP

RIP. Condolences to Ronaldo and the rest of the family. Hopefully the whole club can rally around him now and give him whatever he needs...

Died in a London hospital, according to SSN. Like Kanchelskis mentioned, kidney and liver problems.

RIP Dinis. All the best to Cristiano and his family right now.

EDIT: I've only just got that. It took more than 10 minutes. Semi-consciousness has taken your posting to a whole other level, Fletchazunga.

Hope he dedicates this season to his father with the wonderful football he is capable of.

R.I.P Ronadlo snr.

Chin up Cristiano.

That's the style, Gled.

You can bet SAF will tell him to dedicate not just this season, but his career to his father's memory.

You ain't seen nuttin yet, folks!

It's one of those things in life we all dread but have to face. Christiano is a strong lad and will deal with this in an honorable way that will make us all proud to be United fans.
Our prayers are with him and his entire family and may his father RIP.

Your not alone in this kid. A worldwide red army stands behind you!

Wow, i didn't even know about that, that's very sad news.

I hope maybe the fans could organise a little something for his first game back with us, whenever that is, like a small banner or something just to show our support.

It shocked me as I think he played the full 90 mins today!

RIP

Get back to Portugal lad, spend some time with your mum, feck the football, it's family time.

Never a truer word spoken NEVER!
i lost my dad when i was 10 years old
and its over 30 years ago and i still miss him
Fergie will sort him ,we might not see him for quite a while
But i guarantee he will come back twice the player you fookin watch!

I actually think, from the little i know about his character, i think he may be back quicker than we think, if not City, maybe Villareal.

He should take his time though.

Feel sorry for the lad. RIP. His Dad probably wouldn't have wanted him to miss Portugal's match though. After all, how many fathers have got to see their lad be an absolute star for their country at such a young age. I'm sure SAF will handle Ronnie the best way - he'll either want time off or to get straight back into his football, either way - United fans will be behind him 100% and I just hope if he plays against City he can score a goal or three for his Dad!!!

RIP, Feel sorry for the lad...I just hope he keeps his head up and gets through it. I think he will be back soon though...

This is truly sad for young ronaldo. My condolences goes out to him and his entire family. I am sure SAF would give ronaldo some time off for him to spent with his family, because that is what is most important now. RIP ronaldo senior.

RIP

btw, i remembered Fergie gave a break to a player whose parent has died. am i wrong? who the player is?

Are you thinking of Ferdinand and his grandmother's death? I think he was allowed to miss an European game only to be photographed by the paparazzi at a nightclub or something.

Actually I do.

There are a minority who, might try and taunt people, but nothing United fans havent done.

I recall the Stretford end ringing out with "Keegan Keegan hows your dad" a few years back, and lets face it, its a bit much hoping for respect off them when we cant give it back.

THe majority of City fans wont use that kind of thing to score cheap points, anymore than the majority of us wouldnt.

People have this notion that all other fans are heartless cnuts, and we are the only ones with morals. Its not like that at all. City fans are no different to any of us ( well barring slightly less educated), but on the whole they have hearts, and I dont think they will use the death of a players dad as much as people think they would.

Even if they did, do you not suppose that Warren Barton wont get some stick for what his brother was involved in.

Those in glass houses.........
