Romero Romero where art thou now

It's more logical than controversial, imho.

There's a reason he's been at the club for this long as a 2nd keeper
I think so too, but there’s been way too many serious suggestions on here that he should replace De Gea full time etc.

Sergio has been content to be second best so he is right where he deserves to be. Third best.

If you want to be number 1 you don't accept number 2 like Romero has all these years.
Very strange post. I think Romero has always performed admirably for us, never let us down, never complained. I think he has been harshly treated by Ole, sometimes playing in the early rounds of cups, then being over looked for De Gea in Semis. I also think De Gea's drop in form should have led to an opportunity for Romero, however it seemed to be that De Gea was viewed as untouchable. Hopefully that will no longer be the case with Henderson signing that kind of contract. I cant believe Utd will allow a young GK with bags of potential to sit on the bench week after week

Romero has had possibly the easiest life possible. 10s of thousands per week to train at Man United and practically no pressure on him either.
What a way to live.

So he's doing fulfilling his job and role the best he can? His job is precisely to do just that. To be a good backup. Might be an easy way to live, but what are you getting at? that he shouldnt earn that kind of money? Because then you can complain about every footballer in the World just doing their job earning good money.

Some people on here are just fecking dumb. Reading some of the posts it sounds like Utd shouldnt have a decent back up GK because it shows that they are not ambitious to be a number 1. Perhaps they are right. Perhaps we should let Lingard be the number 2.

Wasn't meant as a dig at him or anything. Was just thinking how much I'd love to be in his position. You know it's really forum mentality that my post was interpreted as me having a dig at him.

If anything Ole hasnt showed the balls with De Gea who has made many mistakes last season. SAF wouldnt have put up with that shite. I remember Leighton getting dropped for the FA Cup final replay for Sealey back in 1990. That's management for you. Play people on merit. Romero should have played more games in my opinion.

I’d love if he joins Chelsea to be number 1. He’s nowhere near good enough to be a top 4 keeper so if Chelsea are playing him it’s only good news for us.

Same here. He’s massively overrated on the caf. He has stepped up for the club when asked but people who wanted him to replace De Gea are mad.

Honestly, people on this forum are so harsh. He has served us dutifully, never kicked up a fuss. I don't see why all of a sudden he's wrong for being a no.2. He has earnt a transfer to whomever he wishes for me, if he leaves all the best.

You sure about that?
Very sure, as are all the professional managers hence he’s never done it. He couldn’t even hold down a spot at mid-table clubs. Like I said I’d love it if Chelsea played him as number 1, combine him with their leaky defending and it’ll be a complete shambles. Lovely for us.

Controversial opinion, but Romero has to be one of the most overrated players on here. I usually argue against players that I don't like, which this makes it difficult as I actually like Romero and think that he has done a fantastic job for us. Yet, his performances, that usually happened against significantly inferior sides in cups, led some fans to believe that he can easily project this form on a whole season, which is not true. Like with all those late-sub goalscorers that have a fantastic goal per 90 minutes ratio, his stats are inflated due to a relatively small sample and a relatively low quality of the opposition.

The last season when Sergio Romero had played as a number 1 was in 2012/13, and that was for Sampdoria that got promoted to Serie A in a previous season. After that he had lost a starting place at Sampdoria, got loaned out to Monaco, failed to establish himself there, got back to Sampdoria and spent another season on the bench. His career for the national team is relatively impressive, but he doesn't have any even remotely decent competition there – and for context I'll mention Marcos Rojo, who had also reached three international finals with Argentina as a starter. I don't think that I need to comment on Rojo's ability.

You can think that he's a keeper that is good enough to be a starter for one of the top-4 teams, which would make him, by default, one of the best keepers in the world, but there's no evidence at all to support this opinion. Facts are, he hadn't been a starter for almost a decade, and haven't been able to become a first choice in recently promoted Sampdoria and Monaco.
It’s stupid that this could in anyway be controversial as it is just facts. To add onto his performances all being against lower league opposition, 5/9 of his Europa league matches he made 0 saves. Didn’t face a single shot in over half the matches. Could literally have anyone in there picking up free clean sheets.

The absolute love in for him is bizarre, he’s an average bottom table keeper. It’s the same with the shit when people started calling Ighalo the best back up striker in the world and how he’s so amazing because he scored against lower league opposition. They’re both bottom table players. There have also been far better back ups than either of them.

It's a disgrace the way he has been treated by Ole. A solid, reliable back-up keeper being dropped for the FA cup smei-final against Chelsea, only for DeGea the genius to commit a howler. Romero than gets dropped for the Europa League semi-final AFTER DeGea's blunder against Chelsea and we get knocke dour, not that being knocked out was all DeGea's fault. mind.

I suppose it was too much to ask for Romero to be trusted for one whole Prmeier Legaue game during De'Gea's shambolic form, let alone be trusted for the competitions he normally plays in, but what do I know? Let's just blindly follow DeGea and never criticise him because a few years ago he pulled off some great saves against the likes of Everton.

The situation with De Gea and Henderson probably isn't sustainable for more than a season and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see one of them gone by the start of the 21/22 season.

It might not be the worst idea to send Romero out on loan somewhere he can be #1 for a year. That gives us the option to keep or sell once there's a bit more clarity with what's going on here.

I think he only has a year left on his contract. We also have Kovar and signed Bishop I believe. Romero should be sold this summer

We have the option to extend by a year too. I doubt Kovar or Bishop would be ready even by next season.

As a number two he's great. I'd say decent enough goalie to be number one in lesser Prem teams.

Nah it's not really forum mentality. It was just because a poster or two before you, had had a dig at Romero without reason. So I looked at your post in that context, but actually tried to ask you what your intention of the post was, instead of assuming you were after him.

Deserves to end his career as a first choice keeper. Somwhere as far from England as possible.

Didn't he give an interview a while back saying that we asked him to stay 1 more season and he is willing to do so? I think it was concerning the past season but I might be mistaken...

I think it is time for him to move on and have 2-3 years as a first choice keeper in an EL team.

Thanks for saving me about 10 minutes. His performances are massively over rated on here, he’s exactly what a back up should be. I read so much about his distribution, yet he’s slicing the ball all over gaff far worse than DDG.

There must have been some indication in training that Romero couldn't cut it. It's either that or Ole didn't have the balls to drop DDG. I think it's the former.

Or you could be a united fan and believe that a player should love to be at united no matter their position in the hierarchy. He’s been a fantastic professional and I wish him all the best - he deserves to be a number 1 for a lesser club.

Sergio Romero has been an amazing player for this club in his role, I too wish him all the best if he chooses to move on.

Romero had a pretty bad blunder against Norwich, that might have sealed that one.

Problem is due to lack of starts it’s all conjecture, but there‘s a lot of interest in him.

But if salary has anything to do with it, I’d say De Gea must be the most over rated, over paid player in the prem.

For several seasons he was genuinely one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Just because his recent form has dipped does not make his earlier form irrelevant.

His lack of starts isn't some kind of a statistical anomaly, it's actually one of the consequences of him not being good enough to start for a top-4 team.

And no, salary has nothing to do with it and De Gea got his salary on the back of actual world-class performances in multiple consecutive seasons.

He was very good for us as a back up keeper, 5 years on relatively lower wages and reliable when called upon. Maybe it's time to move on. He is also 33 and can be first choice at so many other clubs.

What is wrong with what I said?

Honestly so many Sergio Romero number 1 fans in here it's crazy.
Maybe he just wants to stay as number 2 because he loves United? I know if I was Romero as a United fan, I’d very well stay put. Also, he’s backup to a faltering goalkeeper and hardly ever lets us down. I’m sure he thought he had a chance to become number 1 soon (well, not now). I truly doubt he’s just content picking up a wage, despite that being the current stereotype for all bench players.

Of course, being demoted further to 3rd choice might sway him though, as he’ll likely play 0 games in 2020-21.

Good for him, if you look at my post I never said he didn't love United. Also, your second point re picking up a wage, he must be content as he's been here for years and not featured much.

It's not wild to say he's going to become the deserved third best GK.

Reckon he'll be sold. There's apparently a bit of interest in him.
He's been one of the best #2s in the world for a while. It's just unfortunate we've got one of the other best #2s in the world coming back from loan.
