Romeo Lavia | Chelsea bound?

No brainer signing, this guy would be a cracking asset, both for now and the future and surely shouldn't be that expensive.

To be fair we aren’t really top level either. To me he looks better on the ball than either and it’s actually his defensive qualities that he needs to work on. Either way I see his skillset as a much better need for this team than McTominay and Sabitzer who give us nothing good / new.

I actually think he looked extremely composed and competent on the ball when I saw him against us. Although we do have a habit of making opposition midfielders look like Xavi and Iniesta

I misremembered it as a “can’t sell to United” clause, but it’s a clause where City will receive a bigger percentage (40%) of the sale should Brahim Diaz be sold to United (he’s currently on loan at AC Milan from Real Madrid).

Apparently, according to rumours, Suarez also had a clause where he could not be sold to United when he joined Barca.

Apparently, according to rumours, Inter was considering to insert a similar clause into Perisic’s new contract around the time we were linked to him heavily when Mourinho was in charge.

I am unsure if it is legal or not. All I know is it’s petty and shows small time mentality.

I've not said he's a bad player. I said i dont see the hype.

He hasnt stood out for me. He's young, raw and full of potential for sure. He's being talked about as a must buy when he's in reality far from what we need.

Seriously, "not seeing the hype" with someone like Lavia is like just not knowing what to look for when judging deeper midfielders and only looking at goals or assists (which tbh I don't give a feck about when looking at my deep midfielder). It's like when Garner got hype because he'd score 4 screamers in the championship... That stuff isn't important for actually judging how he does in his role.

How is he quality? He's got potential. Potential isnt quality.

He's young and raw. I'm not saying he might not become a good player, he may well, i just think the comments here are hyping up to be a "must buy" when in reality he's far from it.

Not seeing the hype has nothing to do with looking at stats. We play with 1 pivot, Southampton play with 2. Of Southamptons 2, Lavia isn't the better of the 2. So how does Lavia do in the role we would want him for? Oh wait...he doesn't.

Could we coach him and mould him into a single pivot like Casemiro? Absolutely!

I haven't seen anything from Lavia that screams "we must buy him immediately". Exactly the profile top teams would want to bring in is a bit of a stretch giving City let him go without a fight and there are ZERO links from any big club to Lavia.

Not quite true.
City had Rodri for that position and had chosen to buy Kalvin Phillips as cover which meant no pathway for Lavia. They didn't want to lose him outright but knew that he needed to play to reach his potential as soon as possible hence the Southampton sale.
It was a bit of a cockup really as the buyback seemingly only applies next summer and as Saints are now fairly sure to be relegated he may well not want to get kicked to buggery in the Championship if top PL teams want him.
We don't know exactly if City have any first refusal clause this summer but I fear they've lost him as Phillips (so far) seems to not be up to the job.

Potential can mean quality. See Caicedo and how people are creaming themselves over him. Besides he’d take the place of McTominay / Sabitzer in the team. The point is to improve on the players he’s replacing whilst giving us something we need tactically (like his quick feet and long passing). He’s much more of a buildup player despite his inexperience compared to those two. In terms of players who can build up play we literally have nobody - and Martinez our CB is the best at it. So the more additions we make who can contribute in that phase the better.
 
Bringing in a young midfielder as an understudy to Casemiro makes sense. Learn from the best and develop while getting 10-15 starts a season and a lot of substitute appearances. We cannot keep ignoring the age profile of our midfield and McTominay/Fred/Sabitzer/DVB are not going to be any more than squad players from now on so move on one or two of those and bring in a young guy with potential to develop.

Then it’s no brainer isn’t it? We need young backup for Casemiro, he looks promising and doesn’t cost much.
 
He's promising but I think he would need serious work at this level. His passing and awareness would have to step up tremendously at United. You have to do more with the football at United and we ask a lot of our more defensive minded midfielders. I think he'd more likely play with Casemiro as often as he is a rotation option for him so we're not taking too many risks at once. Imagine throwing out Lavia with his inexperience and developmental needs alongside Eriksen for example. That's a really risky profile. So I like him but I don't think he's necessarily ready to make a huge immediate impact so it would be a little strange if he's our one midfield signing.

I think Southampton will ask for at least £50m which means you’re basically paying for future potential than what he can offer right now.

It's basically double what they paid for him and they are relegated, not sure who could pay that much for him to be honest.
 
If the price is rightly £50m then we should leave him and look other places. Not worth the investment when we have so many other places to fill

Depends how many clubs want him and who those clubs are.
The City buyback in 24 is about £40m and his stock has risen since that figure was set.

That changes when the player is relegated. He will be pushing to leave massively and the club loses some persuasive power on the player.

But all the top clubs know how good he looks like being. City, United, Liverpool and Arsenal all will be looking for MF in the summer plus new regimes at Chelsea and Spurs will want to put their own stamp on the squad.
If only half of those teams chase him I can see him making 55-60m
 
We should be all over this. He'll go for a lot more than what relegated players go for because of demand but he's a very good young player who fills a position of need.
