Lukaku scores more goals because he plays far more minutes. He's also the main focal point by far in the teams he plays for, which won't be the case at United where there are other quality attackers alongside him. I think people who expect him to be more clinical than Zlatan was for us are going to be disappointed. Overall our attack is still weaker than it was last season.
Why won't he be the focal point for us? Going by last years system he will be the lone striker. It can also be argued he will get much better service with us and more chances.

I don't watch at transfer fees anymore. This will be a good signing. We definately need a striker.

Medical done, hear he is in our training gear

dem boy dere tried twist up the truth

Not the fan of Lukaku but considering the market for strikers are thin I would be happy to take him.

I made the classic mistake of daring to enter the negativity of the United football section, state of some of the people in here

No complain though that we got him over Morata now. It's 75m pounds not 90m pounds.

I prefer Morata before because he's cheaper for a player who is more technical. But Lukaku for 75m pounds in today's market, I think it's a fair deal. If Lacazette is 52m pounds, 23m extra for someone who is more proven and just scored 25 league goals for Everton is a fair deal.

I remember I checked his stats a few months ago of his conversion rate based on number of shots and goals, he was the 2nd best in PL (1st was Kane). And was better than the other strikers in La Liga and Bundes Liga too.

Sky seem adamant this won't happen, and I don't know why.

Go back to their timeline they tweeted that a deal was agreed, my guess this is a leak from United. Now they are reporting from Everton sources that a deal has not been agreed.

So he'll win us the treble? I'll take that. Yorke was brilliant for us, so were Cole and Sheringham from that era.
This kind of comment makes internet debate pointless. A player's performance over short or long term must be judged by its own merits, not the collective success. Does anyone think less of Gascoigne or RvP even if Spurs and Arsenal weren't successful?

Yorke's Utd career is similar to Hernandez statistically. It's decent but hardly a big roaring success personally.

If the source at United has jumped the gun, and Chelsea sneak in, this place will go into meltdown...

Brilliant news, I'm overjoyed but I still want morata though.

We do still need another attacker that's for sure. I'm buzzing now though.

I mean if we really signed him for 75M after Everton throwing out 100M numbers for over a year now I think that qualifies as a success in the transfer market...

I dunno, it sounds about right in this daft market. He's unlikely to become the best in the world and isn't anywhere near as marketable as Pogba/Griezmann and the like

Remember the draws at home against Stoke, Burnley etc? Ain't happening with Lukaku. I've been warming up to him.

I wonder how the Jose haters will spin this one.

Supposedly he left Chelsea because of Jose.

Everton have obviously told Skysports that no deal is agreed, which I can only imagine is to get Chelsea to join in.

Maybe Morata isn't dead in the water just yet. But surely something with someone needs to start happening before the weekend?!

He needs to have a word with his employers then as they're leading with the story that a fee has been accepted, citing Sky sources.

Sky have gone to shit this summer and the above proves it.

Beeb is running with it anyway.
Sky reported the news from United first and now reporting the Everton side of things.

I pray we haven't jumped the gun and leaked this.. While Everton get pissed and Chelsea sneak in from behind.. My heart can't take these swings..

This feels like small time mentality to me. The only I'd be happy was signing him for not such a stupid fee and since that wasn't to be happening, no scenario could make me "happy". We are seen as a club that can be fleeced and hopefully refusing to buy Morata will help us destroy this image.
I dont know if I phrased my post badly but what youre saying is basically what I meant. Or I am misunderstanding what you are saying.

I would have been happy signing Morata for a reasonable fee, but wouldnt have liked caving in to Madrid's ridiculous demands out of desperation.

As you said, we look like a club that can be fleeced, this should help at least start to change that perception.

So yeah, Im delighted with how things look to be panning out.

We aren't briefing the BBC or Ducker or MEN on a "maybe" signing. They all said the same thing at the same time. It was a MUFC briefing and then Norwood followed up with the confirmation. It's done. relax everyone

Morata has played more minutes at Juve yet, he was far off what Lukaku posted at the end of the season. Both are excellent options and given who is on the market I see no reason anyone to be unhappy with either.
It's a bit odd to compare Morata in Juve to Lukaku this season? If you want to base it on goal-scoring stats alone, Morata has averaged more goals/90 mins than Lukaku in every of the last four seasons except for 2015-16. I think people think Lukaku is a better goal-scorer simply because he's in the PL and they've seen more of him.

It was a huge success! He was our best forward in the clubs greatest ever season. Top 4 alongside Stam, Keane and Beckham.

I'm very happy with Lukaku, absolutely unplayable on his day. Does much better against the lower league teams it has to be said...but that is exactly where we have had trouble.

Also people writing off chances of going for Morata now as well, we may still be after him. Ibra is probably not sticking around, Rooney may be off to Everton. Replace two 30+ strikers with two 24 year olds would be a great/bold move!

Craig Norwood (club photographer) just tweeted that Lukaku will play first game on July 15th for us.

This is signed sealed and delivered.

We'll see medical pictures this afternoon.

Pros to this signing:
  • Scored shedloads in the premier league in an Everton team that doesn't create much.
  • Strong, Fast.
  • Flat track bully (both a pro and con) Seems to score alot vs the lesser teams but goes missing against the big teams (con). This might have been down to the way Everton were setup vs the top 5 but hopefully he'll do better here.
  • Young, if we keep him for long enough and develop him he could become world class
  • Should get us a minimum of 20 goals a season.
  • Jose knows his game.
  • 75mil if correct, is a steal in this market. Even with the inclusion of Rooney.
Cons:
  • Has the first touch of a dyslexic goat. His first touch is almost always a pass... to himself.
  • Isn't very clynical, pretty much the same as Zlatan in that regard.
  • Tends to be pretty stupid in his positioning when his team don't have the ball. I watched a few Everton games against the big boys last season and Baines and Williams spent half the game shouting at him because he was stood in the wrong place or just wandering around doing feck all.
I'm actually just relieved we've signed someone who will make us better and that we don't have to worry about settling into the premierleague, should hit the ground running. He's not world class, but he might become it. Overall i'm very please with this signing.

RVP had one great season, one with decent output marred by injuries and a useless one.

Yorke had one great season.

Cole was good for 3 years and one great year, then lost his focus.

Sheringham score 31 goals for us over 4 seasons. Hardly 'qualified success'. He was also part of a 4 men strike force on heavy rotation.

If we are shelling out 75m for a lead striker, I sure damn hope he will do better than all of them, even as I dont generally give a damn about the money we pay.

See above.

Andy Cole was not a success - you should be banned for that!

Yorke's 29 goals drove us to the treble, the greatest season we have had as a club.

Sheringham was not an out and out goalscorer.

RVN scored 150 goals in 5 years. In what world is that not a success.

You are nuttier than a vat of Nutella.

Normal that Everton denied it, really normal and I'm not astonished at all.

They won't say a deal is done till it's done. Wonder when people realize that public quotes mean nothing ?

As an opposition fan, I think he'd be a great buy. With all the usual caveats about how he might fit into a new club and new team etc. etc. but he's a tremendous player.

@damian can you please put a poll up to see who the caff preference is as there are some thoughts that the "room is split" on this one between Lukaku and Morata
I think there may be some hindsight bias towards Lukaku now. Would have needed to do it before these tweets I think.

Sorry, this doesn't wash with me.

I hope we buy the player best suited to our football, and success comes from there. Buying with the mindset of 'make everyone else weaker' hardly ever came out well. You focus on yourself, not others.

I broadly agree with this. I depends on context: the idea of weakening your opposition might make some sense if you're part of a duopoly. For example, when Borussia Dortmund were posing a serious challenge to Bayern Munich's supremacy in Germany, the effect of taking away one of your opponent's main assets is worth taking into consideration. When you are competing in a league when any one of five teams are in with a good chance of winning the league there's much less sense in factoring this in to your transfer decisions.

Anyway, to save myself from others misintepreting what I meant, a qualified success in my eye is someone who gave 5+ years of stellar football to the club, being an unquestioned name on the team sheet. I don't see Lukaku being that man.

Leaving aside for a moment whether your standards of judging success are reasonable, I think you've got "qualified" and "unqualified" the wrong way around. Something is a qualified success if it is successful on the balance of all factors, but there are significant drawbacks; an unqualified success is something you have no reservations about calling success.

no. no it isnt.

I like the dyslexic goat bit tho

For those who keep mentioning the big team thing, he scored home and away against City last season, and away at Spurs.
