Going for BOTH Morata and Lukaku makes little sense to me if there is still a plan to develop Rashford as CF while keeping him at Old Trafford. In fact, even without the Rashford factor, it makes little sense to buy two young, hungry, ambitious and ridiculously expensive strikers considering the way Jose plays. Such a purchase will likely mean:
- Either Rashford is sent out on loan or his game time gets seriously limited. When the latter happens, many of the same people who are excited by the idea of getting both Lukaku and Morata, will likely be the same people hanging Jose for destroying Rashford's talent and for not encouraging young players.
- Either of Lukaku or Morata will likely start getting unhappy about not playing enough very soon. No matter how we spin it, Morata is not a wide man. Neither is he a supporting striker. He can play those roles but his DNA screams CF. He is a classical number 9 in the Kareem Benzema mould. Benzema drifts wide many times and can attack from there but he is essentially a CF. Locking him down to a wide position because of a 100 million bucks (or whatever the right amount is) Lukaku for a whole season and beyond, might kill him.
(Well, unless of course, Jose completely changes the way he plays and the formations that have won him loads of trophies over the years. If this is the case, we know the high risks involved)
- Anthony Martial will also suffer a drop in game time especially if Jose buys Perisic with Morata and Lukaku.
IF we are going to buy a second striker, I will suggest someone older who will be happy to be rotated. To join either Morata or Lukaku (not both), I would target players like Fernando Llorente, Harnandez or Djeko (I really don't know if any of these will be happy to be rotated but they are much older than the two young, expensive strikers we are targeting). I will even be tempted to bring back Zlatan if he agrees to be rotated and take a pay cut (very unlikely though).
The idea would be to reduce the wage bill, not to be burdened with the ambitions of two young and expensive strikers who are desperate for game time and also to provide a chance for Rashford to develop (otherwise, I would send him out on loan).
