Do we have any word on the reliability of the source? There aren't any quotes, I wouldn't imagine SAF would have been keen on such clauses, but wouldn't go as far as to say "it's not true", as I can imagine RVP looking for similar before he joined, as his main reason for joining was silverware..
Now that we're having separate threads for everything, I think we need some new rules regarding Sources. Or we're going to get lots of worthless threads sourced by the Mail, the Mirror and goal.com.

Wouldn't be the end of the world if he did leave either way. He hasn't looked arsed this season and if it means playing Rooney up top with Mata in the 10 role I think we'll be fine

Newspaper websites, and even the BBC, use pretty wild formatting these days, with words wrapped around images, and all these little sub-columns. Grabbing just the article text can be a total pain.

Good player though he is, Van Persie is NOT the future for us. I actually wouldnt mind at all if we sold him this summer and got him off the wage bill. If we are moving more towards a lone striker system, something like a 4-2-3-1, then my preferred lineup would be Rooney up top and any of Kagawa, Januzaj, Mata and Nani for the 3 behind him. We would then have Welbeck and Hernandez as options up top as well (and Rooney can obviously drop deeper into the 3), giving us plenty of options without RVP.

RVP wouldn't be too missed simply because he very well might be causing morale problems with his frustrations. He wants trophies and if we are re-building for another season or two then it might be better for the team if he goes, especially since Rooney's ability to play as a number 9 and Mata or Kagawa to play behind him.
I can see RVP being of interest to Real Madrid however I would rather a player exchange. RVP would be first choice and if injured then Benzema steps in, having RVP up top increases their chances of getting that elusive 10th champions league title. I would happily swap RVP for Khedira + 10m if such a clause doesn't exist.
Khedira would be our first choice Ball winning midfielder with Fellaini second choice, Carrick second choice DLP so we just sign a first choice here. Rooney first choice number 9 and Welbeck second choice, Mata first choice number 10 and Kagawa second choice. Of course we would need to sort out the flanks but Januzaj and Zaha would be second choice LAM and RAM so we would just need first choice either side, there exists also the option of Kagawa or Mata being a first choice AM and Powell being second choice CAM.

Such quality in the second eleven will keep the first choice players on their toes, sharp and performing to their best to keep the place for the big games however with such quality in the second eleven Moyes would need to be masterful at rotating them and giving them game time. It could mean we have quality back up in the event of injury and we always go into games with fresh players.

There's one site, I forget which, that posts articles written by members of its "writing academy." Judging by the standards of some of the dross churned out, I'd guess the entrance requirements aren't very high.
It's odd that a 'quality' newspaper like the Independant would rehash a story that began on Goal.com. Their online site is hideous and they need more hits, I can't think of any other reason.

I for one never loved him. I appreciated him, acknowledged his talents and supported him. But his relationship with United was strictly business.

Why would we have put this clause in? When we signed him Sir Alex was manager, we were likely to win the league and there was no possibility of us not making the top 4. I expect it doesnt exist, but if he wants to leave we'll let him do so
He is brilliant. Nobody will will suggest anything otherwise.
But like it or not, he and Rooney do not work. They haven't worked in two years and it isn't happening anytime soon. There's no dynamism between them at all. Rooney is Moyes' main man, and for United to prosper going forward then a tough decision has to be made. Van Persie is too good to be sat on the bench, so leaving is probably the best for all parties, as crazy as that sounds. With Rooney up top in his best position, it could allow for some creativity and nous in behind him.

I wouldn't. We need him more than ever, he's in bad form at the moment but that won't last forever. It wouldn't be easy to replace him, he's one of the best.
Problem with Rooney is that his form is quite erratic. I know that at times he covers a large amount of the pitch but often he doesn't achieve very much. He was in good form the first half of the season but to me he never seems to gel with players as he should, no matter who he's playing with.
There are better strikers out there.

I agree, there is. But Moyes loves him, will make him captain, and clearly sees him as one of his own men. Rooney is now the first name on the team sheet and if he and Van Persie don't quite fit, Robin will be the one to make way. It's a bit brutal, but the only way to accommodate the pair of them would be to buy the best straight-line four midfielders on the planet, which just isn't going to happen. Rooney up top with players like Mata, Adnan and Kagawa in behind is the best way to go from here. Or, replace Van Persie with a pacer striker like Cavani or Costa. Like it or not, Rooney is the man.
There's no way in hell that Van Persie and his Agent even considered the thought of not getting Champions League football let alone put a clause in.

I'd seen this "clause" mentioned in a different article a couple days which was referenced by the United Facebook page (I think some automated thing ends up highlighting United related stories for them). Anyway, when I looked on here since I didn't see any mention, I assumed it was just some made up stuff
Though, should point out the article says this supposed clause allows him to talk to other clubs should we not make top 4 but, we still have to sanction the deal. This differs from the Suarez/Liverpool situation, where he was made aware of the offer as legally Liverpool were obliged to and Liverpool would have had no choice to agree to the sale should he have chosen to go. It also is different from a normal transfer dealing in that other clubs can't talk to a player under contract directly as it would be tapping up (unless whatever the Bosman ruling applies for contracts that are expiring).
Overall though I doubt such a clause exists because I don't think anyone knew at the time of his signing Fergie was leaving and there was zero thought of us finishing out of the top 2 (3 if being generous) anytime soon.
