In the final, the players in front of Germany's back five were Matthäus - Häßler - Littbarski - Völler - Klinsmann. Only Matthäus qualifies as a true CM there, and Häßler/Littbarski are some variations of attacking midfielders. Another prominent midfield combination was Matthäus - Häßler - Bein. Browsing through the WC lineups, Matthäus always played with at least one, most of the time even two offensive playmakers in the team.

He does have WvH, Rivaldo and B. Laudrup here.

Not familiar with Hassler but I put him as a attacking CM and Litti was a wide midfielder hybrid. I would call neither as a #10. Both closer to #8.

Hassler could play both as an 8 and a 10. Litti was a pure winger, and completely a part of the attacking unit.

My main point was that Matthäus was the only true CM there, so at least on paper the *deepest* midfielder. In practice I remember him as an omnipresent box-to-box dynamo and hub of the team. (In my memory Littbarski was a dribbling/creative forward who could operate on the wings & centrally. Certainly no #8.)
 
I really don't rate Brian Laudrup in this pool. His time in Scotland from memory was also pretty controversial. He was injured in the second season and then was off the boil in his last.

Edgar set up is easier on the eye, but IMO JB has several advantages - man for man I'd say he trumps it and also I can see Shesternyov, Stiles and Schulz being troubled by a high intense press from the opposition forwards.

All in all I'd probably go with the team with more quality in the ranks to nick it.
