Did he? I'm asking because I saw very little of Depay in Eredivisie. Mahrez looks world class against anyone in the Premier League. Love his skill set.
Depay was playing in a different league. Mahrez looks brilliant in this league. While we should be cautious it does look like he's got 'something'.
I don't get the "in this league" argument. A class player should be able to perform in any league. Dutch football has loads of examples who have taken their form to other leagues, and English football has loads of players who looked top brass for one club but flopped the moment they went to another.
Di Maria WAS world-class before he came to United - and he showed his performances in the CL. But halfway under LVG, we saw him suffer to interpret LVG's demands, and be restricted by his 'philosophy'. It was another matter that he didn't try and adapt, that he was half arsed and never tried, but he suffered none the less. Memphis looked bright the first few games for us, then we saw him get subbed off and dropped when he lost the ball too much, and his confidence and performances have looked ordinary since. LVG talks about young players being inconsistent, he doesn't back them when they are.
PSV's Depay, Real's Di Maria and this season's Mahrez have something in common - they like to pull off tricks, beat their man, dribble and look to create or shoot. They need confidence, freedom to pull this off, and they were (are) in teams which create space for them to run into, have a high tempo to their game - and had managers who would back their skills and encourage them even if they lose the ball when trying to attempt something.
LVG gives none of that. So, unless we're changing managers, which I don't believe will happen in January, Mahrez will not be a good buy for LVG's United.
