Rio Ferdinand

Rio will probably get it followed by Rooney after a couple of years.

I would have no problem if Ronaldo got the captaincy either. Evidence with Portugal shows that he thrives under it.

Yes... based on the experience so far, Ronaldo's ego is obviously a bigger problem than Rooney's temperament or abusing the ref

Great role model for young kids around and captaincy material - abuse the ref every time a decision goes against you.

Footballers are very seldom good role models. That said, I agree that Rooney's petulance needs to be curbed before he can be considered 'captain material', although Terry and Gerrard aren't much better and they're the favourites for the England captaincy.

I also agree that Ronaldo's arrogance shouldn't be an obstacle as far as him being captain is concerned. I think the main thing keeping him from the armband is his constant admission to harbouring ambitions of playing in Spain...

Vidic captained Red Star when he was eighteen I have been told, he is an excellent candidate in my view but I suppose his major hindrance would be his English, or lack of, although he doesn’t sound too bad in interviews.

Agree with the Rio followed by Rooney quote. Rio's status in the team makes him a cert to be our next captain......unless he makes another massive feck up.

rio for a couple of years, then rooney,
but for god's sake, not giggs !

Rio could definitely do the job. I wouldn't consider him a permanent candidate for the captaincy until he gets this new contract sorted and relatively quickly as well. I want him to show how much he wants to play for the club and not feck about like he did last time.

If Ronaldo being captain means he'll stay at United, then I'm all for it. Will probably be Rio/Rooney. My personal favorite tho, Fletcher, in a couple of years

I see three players that should fit
Rio
Rooney
Ronaldo

Rio is probably the best choise..

I think 'captain' in English soccer is one of the most futile concepts. Are you saying that the armband somehow makes a player play beyond his abilities? Extra motivation?

So if you give to Rio, maybe Ronaldo will be pissed off, if you give to Cris maybe Rooney will feel hard done by. You can't really win.

Who cares who is the captain, just give it to the most senior person on the team and move on. You know it makes sense.

Sometimes it does but mostly it's about making the team play beyond their capabilities - see Tony Adams or Roy Keane.

Seeing as this is a Rio Ferdinand thread I found myself in need to ask a serious question.
You guys think those celebrations are genetic or something that Rio and Anton created among them since childhood?

Captain Material

A captain needs to be able to keep his head when things are going wrong and lead by example. At the moment this rules out both Rooney and Ronaldo who - in different ways - are prone to petulence (they're only kids ffs).

I don't think Rio is particularly respected as a leader (on the pitch) and has shown a lack of judgement off it with his party shenaneghans. But he's a better bet than either Rooney or Ronnie.

We don't have much, mainly as a result of the young age of our squad. With '2 Weeks' seemingly out of the picture for the forseeable and Giggs badly out of form I think VDS is the best bet.

Owen Hargreaves is being touted as the captain for the next generation by the media. i.e. Anderson, Nani, Ronaldo Rooney, ect. I think he would be a good choice hes only 27 but highly experianced and lives his life in the perfect way a model professional for any footballer off the pitch and for his work rate on. In training sessions he spends alot off time stood talking with Fergie and Carlos too.

I know he’s his big brother and everything, but look at everything Rio does, then what Anton does; Rio gets braids, Anton does. Rio shaves head, Anton does. Rio does gay jumping on the back of his team-mates celebration, Anton does.
I wonder if he forgot to wee-wee too…..

Rooney should be captain when Neville is retired. How can you not give it to the most passionate, hard working, unselfish and best team player. Needs to mature more but he is getting better.

Rio should be the next captain, he is our most important player has great leadership qualities and now has the experience to fill the role. Only thing I can see preventing this is could be his contract talks. Rooney long term could be captain but thats at least a couple of years away.

Rio should get it, provided he signs a new contract, if it is going to be offered anytime soon. He seems to be already a natural leader on the pitch, and that's good.

Rooney is already primed enough as it is ... a simmering couldron of talent and aggression. Maybe we shouldn't pin this on his shoulders just yet. He can inspire the team with his sheer desire to win, and his natural ability. He'll be able to inspire the team without wearing that armband.

Ronnie is a but to "individual" to be a captain. When the chips are down, he tries to take it all on himself. But a good leader needs to be able to bring out the best in those around him, so far I'm not seeing that just yet.

Manchester United captain? Yes or No?

I noticed he donned the armband yesterday and in the continued absence of Giggs and Neville - both of whom, it is safe to say, are winding down their careers.

I really don't see another outstanding candidate in the squad to be honest. Wayne Rooney is probably the other player who could comfortably take the mantle. What about Cristiano Ronaldo as a long shot?

Overall though, I think Ferdinand has proved his worth to the side over and over again and despite his numerous brain-freeze moments he is the most outstanding candidate for me. I'd give him it over Giggs to be honest, because Giggs only really ever takes the captaincy on the basis of seniority - not necessarily because of his leadership qualities. I also think that generally, centre backs make the best captains as they are not embroiled in the helter skelter of the midfield battle and can see the whole game in front of them.

What say you, Caftards?
Yes x 100

Rio Ferdinand is probably the most suited captain we have in the present squad.

For me Rio is too much of a liability off the field to be considered for the captains role. He sets a terrible example to younger players.

Also on the pitch he is prone to over complacency and and a lack of concentration.

For me Vidic has high infleunce on football manager so he gets my vote :D

Yes, but Rooney would be better

I agree. Would like SAF to jump a generation on this one so that the next 10 years can be remembered in the same way as Keano's legacy. In fact the parallels with Keane are not coincidental and I think a similar scenario would play out, albeit with Rooney actually liking all his colleagues!! Like Keano, when you need someone to stand up, Rooney will always be there, he will never go missing.

In this age of celebrity and excess, Im very proud of Ronney and his willingness to accept SAF, Giggs & Scholes as his role model. (We'll forget his rent a granny episode which was b4 he was at United anyway!) He would immediately mature if made captain (he is rapidly doing so in any case) and would thrive and grow under the responsibility. I can see him being an amazing role model and spokesperson for the club.

Still with the elegant, smart and self made Coleen whom I hope he marries, never in the middle of silly nightclub stories or evenings in the company of racy women of the night, he talks well in interviews and is a shining example on the pitch. Just loved how he ran around on Saturday vs Fulham even though he just had 20 minutes. Dare I say it, but coming from his background, he is a near perfect role model for younger players coming into Manchester United

However, SAF will reward seniority as is his right and appoint Ferdinand, who makes a equally good candidate. In that case, Rooney should be his heir apparent and not be made to wait until Ferdinand leaves the club or retires.

What do people think of Ronaldo as a captain?

The bloke has a massive ego. All the great players do. He already has captain's responsibilities with Portugal and I think he thrives on it. The armband would be like a fashion statement for the lad.

I think he's the sort of captain who takes the lead through performance and he is already an inspiration to other players in our team. He also does the media thing pretty well.

Have we seen a glimpse of the future against Bolton? Ronaldo: A Manchester United captain?

ronaldo does a great job captaining his country and his english is quite good now (i understand him better than i understand rooney a lot of times). I can't see why ronaldo cannot be in the running for captaincy.

Because when things aren't going right for him, he tends to sulk, put hands on hips and stare at his laces. It's at those points that you need someone to gee the team up (cos these days when Ronnie isn't playing well, the team is often struggling).

I think we need someone to tell Ronnie to keep his chin up and Rooney not to get sent off. And someone fluent in English to talk to the referee (so that also excludes Ronnie and Rooney). So I'd go for Rio or Carrick personally.
