Rio - a theory...

venables doesn't compare to bobby robson..

yes.. Tel won a championship is Spain, however he only made ONE change! the team was already good enough!

Amir...yes....I can see Fergie telling his 35 million, 70,000 pound player that there's no pressure as Blanc is the top CB!

Other teams can't wait to get at United's defence because Blanc is staying as he was far too slow at times last season.

Believe me, you would need to do more than just pair Rio with Blanc to fix your defence. Rio plays a virtual sweeper role and needs his other CB to get stuck in. If he's playing with Blanc it would be fun to see the opposition strikers running rings around Blanc and then Rio standing watching the ball in the net- as he NEVER makes last ditch tackles.

You noticed I acknowledged Man Utd as a bigger club where there will be more pressure than Leeds. And I don't think that pressure will make Rio a better player unless you sort out your whole defence or else you will have a 35 million pound sweeper who is amazing at reading a game but does not get stuck in or tackle- as your main defender. I don't see how Rio will be the complete answer unless there's another centreback bought or Blanc gets faster. Hence the more pressure on Rio and the reason why, even though it would be an 'ambitious' move I don't think it would be the right move, for now.

I know you and everyone else will disagree but I'm trying to have an informed debate here about the footballing merits of why he should move...not club v club.

I agree on one thing - Rio and Blanc is not likely to shine as a partnership because neither of them is able to play a "hard man" role.

In that aspect, I believe Gary Neville (if we don't sign another centre back) to be the better partner for Rio. Neville can get stuck in, organizes things and bellows at the defence if necessary.

There's huge pressure (relatively) on every player that plays for Manchester United, but at the moment Blanc seems to be the base of our defence because he's the best defender in the club. I've heard plenty of nonsence about Blanc's pace, I just didn't seem to notice his lack of it cost us anything.

I respect your analysis of our defence, but I don't think that is any sort of consideration for Ferdinand, who obviously has something to think about (or he'd already say he's staying and thats that). We are looking to rebuild the backline, in the center especially, but this isn't a modelling contest that a player can think 'Ok, they'll settlle every position and only then they can call me to complete it.

United are offering a huge challenge. Maybe the biggest challenge in the footballing world at the moment. So what's your point exactly? Rio should think "If United want me, they should improve their defence first!". ;)

So thats all Robson's done is it?

Venables nearly won the trophy for one of the biggest clubs in the world...

How did he do at Portsmouth?

The biggest question isn't really what they've both done, but what they can do now. Robson proved he's still got it, while Venables hasn't coached a team in the highest level for quite a long term.

> Whatever way you look at it their fairly even as regards succes.

Are they fcuk!

FACup, 2 time Dutch league champion, Portugese cup winner, 2 times Portugese champion, european cup winner's cup at Barcelona.

so say rio has 48hours to make up his mind with his family after todays meeting

Rio keeps it in the family
By SHAUN CUSTIS

A HUGE family meeting holds the key to Rio Ferdinand's future.

And sometime this afternoon or tomorrow morning the white smoke will billow from a chimney in the South London suburb of Peckham announcing that the big decision has been made.

That's basically my point. Why should Rio join and look bad as his signing won't fix all the problems! It's a consideration as well you know.

Why should Rio stay and play for a club thats going nowhere? Venables said the challenge at Leeds was to make the club great and become a legend.

Well, we're only asking him to help the defence ;)

Honestly though, I don't think we've got back defenders. The vital thing is that they need to operate like a unit and Ferdinand can be the base for that for 10-12 years.

Anyhow, a United offer comes one in a life time for most players. If he says 'no' now, he may never get another chance. Do you see him playing the 'you'll ask again in 12 months' card?

Rio wants to win trophies...not a trophy but trophies....Leeds have not won one yet and only the bigger teams are capable of doing this....

Also Rio has to consider the following: Leeds are selling one of their better midfielders to a contender, Liverpool....and most likely will be selling Dacourt as well....This leaves Leeds with a weaker midfielder and the midfield is the engine room of any championship winning side....
They are not going to win trophies with the current lot....

Then the argument of Rio being unable to fix a dodgy Man Utd defence....thats his challenge isnt it...How big a player is he? Only Rio can answer this.....in the next 48 hrs.

El Tel wants to build his team around Rio/Kewell and Viduka. What a twat, Rio I can understand but Kewell is injury prone and a bit tempramental(although he is a good player) and Viduka cant make up his mind if he wants to play in Spain/Italy or England and the chances are that if IF Leeds get a big enough offer for him they will sell him, hardly inspiring fo Rio is it?

also take this into consideration, leeds are in the eufa cup, and there are no guarantees they wont be in same position next year.

we are in the CL for so many years now, and if we buy correctly then we willl be definates for the CL every year for years to come.

Also take this into account we are only among the few major european teams that are contenders for the CL.

RIO maybe you could be a part of a treble and be remembered for ever, like sheringham, johnson, stam, and cole and even yorke, who have or will be leaving the club (OOPS i nearly forgot our most inspirational player that year......... DAVID MAY, who inspired us, and tought the team how to lift the trophies, not to mention pose for team photos ).
