It was obviously in his best interests to keep both sets of fans in Leeds and Manchester happy. I wouldn't have expected him to come right out and say "I want to go to Manchester''
Had he done that and the move - if there is one - fallen through how could he have turned around and said he was committed to Leeds all along?
I bet you, in private, he has already told Leeds United what he wants to do.
Oh, and by the way, the answer is yes. If Man United want him, they will get him. But he could be just one of three or four targets like last season when only two from six names on the hit list were signed...</strong><hr></blockquote>

I agree the fans need to be appeased by both parties, perhaps it is a done deal, but I still think 30m is a lot of money and for that reason alone it isn't cut and dried. Most are talking as though 30m is easy money to us, when I don't believe it is.

Put simply, Manchester just doesn't appeal to these foreign types, with Veron being the exception to the rule rather than the start of a trend.</strong><hr></blockquote>

foreign types? whatabout RVN, Stam, Fab, Blanc, Silvestre...etc etc

surely you mean SerieA stars?

Mainly Italians, Spaniards and South Americans playing in the former twos leagues.

As I mentioned in another thread. So who is on the way out then? There can only be three who would go anyway close to balancing the books.

And out of those three we'd only really sell one (for now).

Bye bye Seba.

Ruud, Veron, Scholes, Giggs or Becks are the only ones that'll fetch big transfer fees.

i doubt whether it'll be Giggs, Scholes or Becks..

my guess is that its veron.. i hope its not Ruud but who know whats going on behind the scenes??

would anyone of us have believed that Stam was going to be sold , this time last year???

That's who I'd prefer to see go frankly.

Personally I think there's as much chance of u signing Ayala and not selling anyone as there is of selling Veron and buying Ferdinand.

By the way, I noticed in Rio's quotes this morning that he wants to go away on holiday and 'relax'. That suggests he already knows what he's going to do next season. Wish he'd hurry up and tell us.
Peter Kenyon has also reiterated (in the MEN today) that any deals would be done after the World Cup. He says we "ought to expect things to start moving in the next few weeks."
He did confirm that an initial enquiry was made for Rio last month, at which time Leeds were unwilling to sell. Reading between the lines it looks like the situation has changed...

The world cup is not relevant any more, as the players involved in the tranfers are not involved in the WC.

Oooh... and he will smash the transfer records!!!

Oh, and to the question - Yes. Fingers crossed to that. ;)

The whole thing must be in the balance. Firstly Leeds would have to agree to sell Rio to us which I would have thought was highly unlikely given the rivalry etc. Secondly we would have to offload one of our players, maybe in a part swop arrangement which would not only help finance the Rio deal but would give Leeds the incentive and excuse with which to appease their fans for selling their prized asset to us of all clubs. The two who come to mind as part of such a deal are Veron (who they probably don't want and who wouldn't play for them anyway) and Paul Scholes who Leeds (and any other club for that matter) would love to have. Despite the fact that Scholes is a wonderful performer and probably our most naturally talented allrounder, if Veron stays Fergie is going to have the same problem as last season - where to fit him in. This is compounded by the emergence of Nicky Butt as a midfielder of true international class. Problem solved if Paul is part of such a deal. Having said all that, I can't see Paul playing for anyone else given his background and popularity at Old Trafford. Consequently I remain very sceptical about the Rio deal unfortunately. At the end of the day let's hope Leeds don't leave us feeling frustrated and looking silly over this.

Have to say we would be responsible oursleves for looking silly and feeling frustrated. We are the ones (United fans on all forums) who seem to ahve decided the deal is done. As usual.

If Rio comes to Utd, Im thinking they will want more than 30 million. They will be without Bowyer this season. Fergie has hinted that he will be making a major decision.

Is it possible that Leeds will sell Rio for 20/25 million + Paul Scholes?
Keano is too important, Becks is a free kick specialist - important for major matches, Butt is cover for Keane and Veron to play in front of Butt or Keane.

RVN and Ole Gunnar are too important - goals win matches.

Too depressing!!!!!!

yes but only after they sort out who's to blame , O'DREARY SAYING HE CAN GO IF HE ASKS TO AND RIO SAYING HE WILL GO IF LEEDS WANT TO SELL HIM <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

Does anyone here seriously think Scholesy would join Leeds??? feckin no way.

You're probably right, but what happens if he's given no choice or that the deal is made very attractive for him, bearing in mind of course that he's supposed to have turned down other lucrative offers before ? How then is this Rio deal going to work ? I think the short answer is that it ain't unless some deal involving one of our top stars is struck.

This only applies if Rio is likely to sign. Why would he need to keep Man Utd fans happy if he was staying at Leeds?

What would have been said if there was no chance of a move, for example Owen to United? Houllier would say "He is not for sale to anyone, especially an English club, especially United". Owen would say "I couldn't possibly turn my back on the best fans in the world. This club is ten games from recapturing former glories, etc, etc". He would not worry about upsetting us.

Makes me think Rio has a good reason to keep his options open.

A lot of over-analyzing going on here to say the least, so I'll start.

If United want Rio & Rio wants to come, he'll be our new # 5 as soon as he gets back from his hols.

£30m+ is of course a lot of money but, United have it and, for a 23 year old with the attributes and potential Rio has, it's worth the outlay imo.

I don't think United will have to sell to finance it as the Nike money kicks in along with whatever transfer budget has been allocated for the season. Profits for the PLC are as god as they have ever been so all in all, if he's gonna cost £30m and Fergie wants him, we'll get him.

Btw, Julian, Scholesy + cash for Rio??? Do me a favour.

Hope you're right as I'm a big Paul Scholes fan. However in the absence of Kenyon saying that there is 30m - 40m available, and by the way there has been no official transfer kitty in recent years, I remain very sceptical. Furthermore we need others in addition to a CB including a striker as we can't rely on RVN and Ole soley bearing in mind we still don't know what Diego is really capable of and what his best position is even. Scholes was unhappy for part of last season due to the fact that Fergie didn't really know where to play him when Veron was in the side. If Veron stays that problem will continue and either Butt or Scholes will have to sit it out and that is an injustice to Paul particularly. Be prepared for anything.

All this stuff about Rio i can understand but what i can't, is how did Leeds get to him before we did?

We had Stam and Johnsen at the time, and no need for him.

Silly money and concluded before the CL deadline so only another 2 weeks of this bullshit to go :(

Yes, and Blanc will partner most of the time. But what a luxury then to have 3 young defenders in Rio,Brown, and O'Shea. And all three are quality and will only get better. I also expect more from Phil Neville in the next year, it is make or break for him.
