Blanc, for starters.

If we can get Ferdinand than with Brown and O'Shea around we will be able to create a true long term defensive partnership.

I posted something on here a month or so back, it was about the consideration for a move for Rio, before the World cup had hyped him up so much.

Although I think that Rio has excellent quality the main reason was that I thought he would be the perfect partner for Brown. I reckon if some of his passion and determination could rub off on to Wes it would be just what he needed. (wes seems to lax at times) In my opinion they could be an ideal combination for both the premiership and Europe.

Rio is tall and strong and also a talker, which I feel would go along way to organising the defence. For those who think Brown isn’t up to it, I impartially reckon that if we get Rio it would be just a matter of time before Wes excels past him. Think about it Brown is going through a phase like Rio did at West Ham and he isn’t much of a talker on the pitch, I reckon Rio could help him through it and improve him as a player. Wes has it all in his game, for those of us who saw him when he first came on to the scene; we know how good he really can be.

Rio to be a RED next year!!!

With out exaggeration Rio and Wes could be the English version of Nesta and Cannavaro.

I guess ill excercise caution here and says no.
Though i hope im wrong. Not sure about the alledged price though.
And im not sure whether id prefer Brown or O'Shea alongside him (after Blanc retires). My mind says O'Shea at this point. Glad im not manager

Maybe Yes, Maybe No.

I don't want no stinking guillotine on me neck.

There's just one aspect about this whole rumour that irks me. Paul England has already said it: money.

I don't think that because we broke the UK transfer record last year it necessarily means we will again as though this is the norm. 30m is a lot of money and I think many on this board are overlooking this. If we do buy Ferdinand I have no doubt that we will have to sell, and sell big.

That seems to be the suggestion from Edwards' quote..

Which leaves three possibilities in my eyes. Veron or Ruud or Beckham. They are the only players who could command such a fee. I personally don't think Keane will ever be sold by Ferguson, he will only be sold if he asks to be. Even in that worst case scenario I couldn't see him commanding more than a 15m fee bearing in mind his age.

I wouldn't think it would be Beckham...that would be a very strange move after tying up a new contract etc..

Veron is the obvious candidate, tho I'd clearly prefer it to be RVN..

If it was RVN then you wouldn't really be helping matters would you? You'd need to spend big on a decent striker..

Yes. A few complications will be overcome, Fergie will get his man.

I wouldn't like to think it was Beckham either. I just thought his extension was a bit short (2 years) and perhaps so purely to ward off approaches for the meantime but with a view towards cashing in in a year or two.

Veron seems most likely to me too, but you never know, perhaps Ruud will be sold. If he is sold though, then as you say we need a replacement and bearing in mind we needed another striker already this move doesn't make sense to me unless we get stupid money for Ruud (50m+ (unlikely if you ask me)) and even then it doesn't add up.

Yes...

First money will be an obstacle but my guess is that there will be a Man United player going the opposite direction.. only problem is WHO?

Oh, so *now * everyone thinks Veron might go to Leeds! I mentioned this as a possibility the other day and got me throat jumped down!

I can't see this possibility being discussed anywhere in this thread.

As if..

Leeds are skint, they'll want cash if they're losing their best player..not some half hearted flop who won't want to go anyway

Judging by the comments, it sounds like the deal's sorted.

Judging by whose comments?

Ferdinand is now reported (on onefootball) as saying if Leeds want him to stay he'll stay, but if Leeds want to sell him he'll go. None of this is as cut and dried as anyone here (or any other forum) thinks.

The comments of Fergie, Edwards and O'Leary. Two big clubs mutually discussing the possibility (and future scenarios) of one of their best players moving from one to the other? Definitely not normal practice. Why aren't the rumours being flatly denied??? I can't understand this, although as with all transfer talk nothing is for sure until the player actually signs. However, the comments by the managers of both clubs are undoubtebly abnormal practice. Reminds me very much of the Ruud talk before he was supposed to sign (the first time).

well..if Ruud goes..it'll cause more uproar than the Stam saga.. and much much more than ince, hughes and kanchelskis combined...

Or one big smokescreen to cover Nesta negotiations? Nesta was rumoured to be the big pre WC target. Suddenly he's no longer on the agenda and Ferdinand is.

What else is he going to say then? I would have been really stupid of him to say he wants to go to Manchester (remember Ince posing in a United shirt while still at West Ham?).
It was obviously in his best interests to keep both sets of fans in Leeds and Manchester happy. I wouldn't have expected him to come right out and say "I want to go to Manchester''
Had he done that and the move - if there is one - fallen through how could he have turned around and said he was committed to Leeds all along?
I bet you, in private, he has already told Leeds United what he wants to do.
Oh, and by the way, the answer is yes. If Man United want him, they will get him. But he could be just one of three or four targets like last season when only two from six names on the hit list were signed...

Personally i'd be very sceptical about the idea of Nesta coming to United. Real Madrid are probably the only club in the world that can really attract an Italian player at the very top of his game. Put simply, Manchester just doesn't appeal to these foreign types, with Veron being the exception to the rule rather than the start of a trend.
