Right, I'm getting. . .

Why would you buy a Slim if you have a 360? Practically all decent games are multiplatform and those that are not arent worth the £150 investment.

I bought a PS3 full price a year or two ago to play MGS4 and Uncharted, the latter of which I didnt enjoy as much anyway. Its now collecting dust as a Blu-Ray player, though evem nowadays the standalone players are cheaper than the PS3.

Think it through, that sort of money isnt worth it to play the likes of Warhawk and Wipeout, neither of which are exceptional and there are heaps of similar games on the 360.

The fact that you don't like Uncharted says quite a lot though. And you didn't buy a PS3 two years ago. You were still going on about the chrome trim just over a year ago. Well, PS3 slim doesn't have the chrome trim, so it's something less for people to now worry about.

Same. The expensive Bluetooth keyboards normally come with a touchpad though, similar to a laptop.

Cheapest option is that keypad that connects to the controller.

Apparently, the whole thing works like a touchpad if you run your fingers over the keys.

That's the geekiest thing I've ever seen. Only thing missing is a Star Trek symbol, which you can press and communicate with.

Things like that, messaging, etc. PS3 has a web browser, so it's one hell of a of easier I suppose than using the virtual keyboard.

But why not use your laptop / desktop computer for that? A console can't replace them surely.

Would you say it can replace owning a computer altogether?

No, it doesn't have enough memory, and it can't run Windows. The browser under the PS3 operating system is also not what you would call industry strength either, but it's quite sufficient for most tasks. Using it for forums and things like Facebook from your couch on a large screen at 1920x1080 resolution for basic browsing tasks is quite appealing for many people.

The CPU in in the PS3 is far more powerful than what you will find in a laptop.

Alright, then I get the appeal. Is it complicated to install linux on the PS3? I'm buying a PS3 soon myself.

You can't install Linux on the slim PS3. Many reasons for this, not worth getting into. It's not a hardware problem, it's a software one, basically they can't be arsed.

Awesome

I'll still probably get the slim one, since it's cheaper I think (?).

I like the glass effect - looks the business.

Weaste, you gave me some tips lat time which I really did appreciate. Could you look at that one i've gone for and see what you think?

Looks pretty decent to me for the price mate. What do you think, you're sat there watching it? I suppose that you've not given it any HD input though yet?

Yeah that's the thing, i've not been able to use HD yet and i'd assumed that's the true test of it. As it is without HD it's a massive improvement anyway on my older tv but that was always going to be the case.

Get the PS3 and buy Dark Knight on Blu Ray, sit down with a beer and a snack and turn the volume up, you cannot fail to be impressed.

They don't make the big fat ones anymore, so...

The problem is with the hypervisor on the new slim models. It's something that runs on the Cell processor and controls everything that goes on. For games it lets them have control over almost the entire machine. Under Linux, it keeps things tight, only letting access to certain things through itself, and it's there where the problem is. They changed or revised quite a bit of the hardware in the slim model, and they can't be arsed as of yet to update the drivers for that hardware for the hypervisor to use.

I didn't understand much of that, sadly (other than that I won't get a decent OS on the PS3 slim, which is the important thing).

But I wonder.. when do you think they'll release the PS4 realistically?

Take off your PS3-fanboy goggles, Im not the only one who disliked Uncharted.

For the record I would have said the same thing had he been a PS3 owner looking to purchase a 360.

I've got a PS3 and I only use it for gaming for now... My brother insists that watching blu-rays on it will damage the blue-ray laser longterm. Is there any truth in this? I've tried searching the net, but couldn't find anything, so I assume this is bull..?

I very much doubt it, lasers will go now and again but its not down to watching a movie on blu-ray, else it kinda makes a mockery of the format. I'm not saying its fact but its highely unlikely.

This is definitely playing a part in my thinking, i hear a lot about the xbox's packing in. I'd rather pay a bit more and get a proper piece of kit - if that's what it turns out i'm doing.

Oh and don't forget you won't have to pay for online gaming........

Or a wireless adaptor.........

Both of which come standard in the PS3 and the former free.

The PS3 is the dogs knob for all sorts of things other than gaming as well as being a brilliant games console. The Play TV option which is a 50 quid add-on makes it into a Tivo like digital recorder as well. Great piece of gear. Probably an even better bit of gear than my iPhone which is itself a major part of a dog's genitalia.

Think of it this way, most games don't do an install, so where is the data coming from? Secondly, game data can be scattered all over the disc, so the head with the optics on it is dancing all over the show; Blu Ray movies are linear/sequential, not random access, so the head moves very slowly across the disc in one direction. Which do you think is likely to cause the most wear and tear?
