Right back....what are the options (if any)?

@SER19 How can you tell that Dalot is ready? He has played 5-6 games for us as RB and not been convincing defensively. I agree that he has the potential to develop into a solid player, and has shown his quality in some situations, but I would not be comfortable with him as our starting RB next season. If he was ready to be our nr. 1 RB he would have taken Young's place by now. Young is just not good enough, and have to be replaced as soon as possible.

However, I totally agree that we should stay way clear of Declan Rice as he is not the type of player we need. Far too defensive as a DM for us, and no better than McTominay.

Wan-Bissaka made his way into the Palace team towards the end of last season, and has played brilliantly in PL for this entire season. He has far more experience than Dalot as RB at this level, and has been rock solid for Palace. I know that his role has been mainly defensively, but I think this is more related to his instructions rather than his abilities. With Zaha and Townsend as wingers and Van Aanholt as LB, the conservative Hodgson obviously wants Wan-Bissaka to stay back. Wan-Bissaka would instantly be our best RB and strengthen our defense.

I’ve just seen enough of him, regardless of where’s he’s played for us, to know that he has enough talent and the attitude to be in our first team, or at least certainly be there ahead of any proposed unproven young alternative that would cost a fortune.

I don’t understand the concerns over Dalot, defensively, my self.

Clearly he’s young and still learning but he’s made plenty of good tackles in and around our box and demonstrated a good understanding of positioning.

Tell me more about how ready Dalot is and how we should go into next season with him and Young as our only options at RB. I love a good fairy tale

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kenny Lala and Thomas Meunier. Any of those 3 would be mint. I’m terrified we’ll go for Kieran Trippier though, just so OGS can call him “Tripps” in press conferences.

Depends on what formation Ole wants to play with. If we go with wing backs Dalot could play right wing back, but if we play 4 at the back Dalot is a liability as a right back. He's not quick enough, and there are too many speedy wingers in the pl that he will be exposed time and again. That 1st goal ie the dodgy penalty came from him getting done for pace by the Cardiff player. I like him as a player, he's decent going forward but defensive wise in a back 4, not for me.

I agree with that about Dalot, given time I think he can develop into a quality fullback but wing-back seems to be his current strength. AWB is a must sign for me. Seems solid and reliable. Can't say that about many of our defenders presently.

 You mean "Trippy"? What a squad we would have with Youngy, Rashy, Rom and Trippy!

Would you prefer Cancelo over Wan Bissaka and Meunier?

Luke, rashy tripps on poggy.

Stefan Lainer, a 26 year old Austrian right back who’s had 2 particularly good seasons for Red Bull Salzburg. He’s been great in the Europa League. Very hard working and good attacking wise. Could be a hungry, cheaper alternative to Meunier but still a good age profile not to alienate Laird and Dalot.

1 goal, 8 assists this season. 2 goals, 11 assists last season.

I think Napoli were strongly linked with this lad. When it looked like Hysaj was on the way out. Watched one Europa game with him in and didn't stop running.

He was, yep. I think Napoli agreed a €10m deal with Salzburg but the latter tried to get an extra €2m out of them and Napoli refused to pay it. They signed Malcuit instead if I recall.

An Austrian fan here on Red Cafe mentioned that he could well be United quality if he makes the leap.

Youcef Atal is a Jordi Alba type absolute flying machine. Would be a great attacking outlet.

This is the kind of player we should be looking to sign. He'll be a cheap option and could be easily offloaded if it doesn't work out.

Looks very impressive. But is he a really a RB? I've recently seen him play LW and RW for Nice. Is that like a temporary thing?

Yeah scored a hattrick from left wing recently. Played 10 games at RB this season according to transfer market. Think it's his main position.

From the little I've seen of Atal, he looks like he'd be ripped apart defensively in the Premier League. Wonderful going forward though.

  1. Cancelo - £45m
  2. Wan Bissaka - £45m
  3. Meunier - £20m
Probably my top 3, all realistic, my guesses on how much they'd cost. Cancelo would be a very good all round, long term option who would improve us going forward, Wan Bissaka would improve defensively but be like Shaw in that he's average in attack, Meunier would be a shorter term, cheaper option that gives Dalot a path to take over from him eventually, but also would be a huge upgrade in attack (but nothing special defensively).

Kenny Lala I heard good things about, never watched him. Trippier is awful and would be more of a problem than Young is (because Young is 33 and nobody sees him as a solution).

Cancelo please. Perhaps the best right back in the world? He’d improve us significantly with his attacking contributions. Just imagine the threat from the right hand side with him and someone like Sancho

Looks better than anything we have on the wings either side or any winger we are realistically being linked with, sign him as a winger, bonus of a winger who will get back and can defend not sure how good he is defensively, but why the heck not

I was banging on about signing him over a year ago. Only £30m too, which would've proved to be a bargain IMO.

Yeah, there was an opening when he was on loan at Inter but we passed it up, I can't see why Juve would sell him now.

If Cancelo is available, would you sign him over Wan Bissaka?

Similar prices, I'd take AWB due to being in the league, will have chemistry with the other youth players due to nationality and being younger generation.

Dalot being a right back is a write off, anyone who thinks otherwise is blind. All of Dalots best attributes are suitable to wing play, he cannot defend for sh*t. I know Evra had a bad first season but it took what a few mere months and he was one of the best in the league. Dalot will need the premier League to be championship standard before he's considered one of the best.

Remind me, how old was Evra when he came here? Dumb argument, really.

RB isn't the biggest priority but stopping Young playing will benefit us massively.

I'd edge towards someone who knows the league and would be solid enough and compete/rotate with Dalot rather than a high profile throw money at it sort.

I like Wan Bissaka - probably the best young RB in the league bar TAA.

Other premier league options would be Doherty from Wolves, or Soares from Southampton. Neither are world beaters, but they are had working reliable consistent grafters. Something we lack. Wouldn't cost a bomb and better options than Young/Jones/Lindelöf at RB

The lad from Leicester is good as well, but most likely not attainable
