People i want us all to go back to a time when video game entertainment was predominately 2D and Super Mario was the Daddy!

Being 26 years old and having played video games for a good twenty of those years i now look back at 'retro' games with great fondness.

For those of you, like me, that look back at the NES, SNES and MEGADRIVE era with the aforementioned great fondness, i thought it would be cool for us to list and discuss some of our favourite 'old school' games.

One of my all time favourites was the NES title DOUBLE DRAGON 2. A side scrolling beat 'em up. This to me is an all time classic.

Try playing Super Probotector! The most ridiculously hard game ever!

Don't go here.

Don't download the executable file and don't play Double Dragon 2 for free on your PC as that would be piracy and therefore wrong :smirk:

I would also not suggest you look at any of the other pages on that site or download any of the 700+ other SNES and Sega games that they have ported into simple windows friendly .exe files rather than having to faff about with DOS emulators.

Of course if you owned the game originally and still have it then it would all be perfectly legal.

R-Type (I play the arcade version of this on my PC using an emulator - love it)
Bubble Bobble
Super Mario Cart
Lotus 3
Turrican 2
Sensible Soccer

There are quite a lot.

I loved Sensible soccer. I had it on the SNES. They didn't have the player name licences if i remember rightly.

Some of the names were as funny as feck!

Ryen Goggs
Paul Once
Eric Centona

Thanks Bury Red.

But of course i won't be visiting that site ;)

Was best on the Amiga, though. My fav football game, ever.

And Super Metroid was brilliant on the SNES.

Zelda: Link to the Past on SNES is still one of the best games ever!

Project X
Wings Of Fury
Cannon Fodder
Sensible Soccer
Turrican
Lost Vikings
Apidya
Another World

...and many more.

How do I check the controls for this thing?? Couldn't figure out the button presses.

Oh, I DID NOT download it by the way. Just thought I'd ask.

The arrow keys would definitely not be the direction keys, similarly the A key would not be Space, the B key could not possibly be Ctrl and the C key would never be Shift. Do not press Enter to start and definitely do not press Alt to pause.

I know that none of these keys are correct because I haven't downloaded any of these games as that would be naughty. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

Are those games online on the net?
The ones on the site I linked are downloadable but are typically only 500Kb to 3Mb so only take a couple of minutes to download. Don't do it though.

Many of the ones discussed above including the Double Dragon series, Turrican, Sensible Soccer, Probotector, Contra, Golden Axe, Lost Vikings, Cannon Fodder etc are on that site, as is my personal favourite Earthworm Jim.

i liked castlevania on the nes/snes

The castlevania games ruled.

I loved the original and most of all Super castlevania 4. That game ruled.

Megaman 1-3 were also classics for the NES

Anybody remember Wizards and Warriors on the NES?

It was a wicked old game. They made a few sequels if i remember correctly.

.... I never visited the said site and downloaded Cannon Fodder and definitely didn't go to options > set config > controllers > and define keyboard controls to whatever I desired.

No thanks to you.

I don't know many others and the ones I do have been mentioned... Cannon Fodder and Golden Axe with 2 players was great. Also not quite as retro I don't think but I used to love playing Micro Machines...

Downloaded a Spectrum emulator a few months ago.

Still can't complete Bugaboo the Flea.

This is a problem for me. I do run the arcade version of R-Type, but it's almost uncontrollable with keys.

Super Mario Kart on the Snes may be the reason I got a shit (Desmond) degree.
I still dream of the jump on ghost island.

Also anybody played Geomerty Wars on Xbox arcade? Proper old school stuff if you ask me, but looks amazing on a HD telly.

And i'm looking forward to Sensible world of soccer on LIVE more than I was Halo 3. No joke.

All awesome (don't remember Apidya though).

Add Xenon 2, Speeball 2, Monkey Island, Championship Manager (I was a tranfer muppet back in '92), Shadow of the beast and Lotus Esprit turbo challenge.

Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga was the worst game ever though.

And how big werre the boxes for games back then?

interesting story.

sensible soccer was created when the programmers behind the Settlers games decided they wanted a footie game to play at lunch time and all the current games were wank.

so they literally nabbed the little guys from Settlers 1. and lobbed them on a pitch.

hey presto.

Sensible Soccer was born.

Chrono Trigger. Still one of the best role playing games of all time.
Yep, another one is Final Fantasy 3 USA. IMHO, is the best role playing game that I've ever played, the graphics is not as class as FF8 to FF 12 of course, but the story is fantastic and while in FF8 you got Squall as the main hero, in the classic FF3 there is no main hero, it depends on how you pick your character/role.

On the other note, I also fancy Sega's Streets of Rage 2, especially that little kid character with a rollerblade.

I've played Grid Wars, which is a clone for the PC. Got addicted for weeks.

The game got taken down, presumably Microsoft weren't happy. Shame.
