Retired footballers, that could still compete if they wanted to

Well as some mentioned - Robben ran a marathan in 3h 13 minutes or something like that a few weeks ago - clearly he is VERY fit still

Dont think so. He went to Groningen (his first pro team i think) for a send of season, but his body could not hold up. A bit sad actually.
He might still look fit running a marathon or triathlon, but no more quick movements for his muscles please.

Remember the programme where Harry Redknapp got the 96 England team back together to play against Germany?

I think it was Le Tissier who worked out as most fit out of all of them

This thread makes me wonder what type of 5/6/7/8/9 aside games retired pros play in on weekday evenings, or if they even have the desire, or the working body, to do so. Is there some sort of underground circuit for these fellows to play against previously high level players on a regular basis, can't imagine it would be at all rewarding to play against a bunch of randoms looking to tell a story about how they megged/snapped some former pro.

No one who has retired for over 2 years can play in the premier league. Don't be silly.

Also, Wesley Sneijder  he can form a team with Vd Vaart and Theo Jansen and just eat the opposition.

Cafu was still sprinting up and down the right flank for 90 minutes in Soccer Aid at age 52:

The physicality needed to actually compete at the top level is something else though, and it simply isn't possible at that age.

Professional footballer trains every day (at any level). A retired footballer doesn't. Even if not too old to compete, just being out of form would be insurmountable obstacle, in practice

Aguero in terms of still having the ability (if not the physical condition)

Ben Foster. Played decently last season in the Premier League.

I imagine goalkeepers are the most likely to be able to come back to the game after a few years out.

There is some that are still very fit, some aren't.
The ones that still work as coaches or assistant coaches, like Demichelis as U23 coach at Bayern or Alex Zickler, who was assistant coach of Rose at Salzburg, Gladbach and Dortmund looks very fit in legend matches. I would bet that Zickler still would have won sprints against Hummels...

Lahm has gotten a belly.

Most of them wanted to continue to compete, but their performance just wasn't nowhere near the level required, hence the reason they retired. If you do a quick google research about human physics you will understand why age matters a lot in athletic sports.

Weren´t RVN knees absolute shot?
I don´t know but I always feel VDS could do a job.

I don't think anyone who's retired for more than a year could compete at any decent level and definitely not anyone over 40.

Berbs keeps posting workout, yoga and ball control training videos.

He is still oozing class and he could do a job even at this age in a slower league.

Also, the man looks 20 times fitter than the likes of Luke Shaw
