Reds prepare for Black Cats

Fabio was ok.

James was very quiet imo, didn't impose himself nearly enough on the game, could do, and has done in the past, a lot better.

Kiko was ok too - a bit isolated for much of the game but showed glimpses of what he can do. Could really do with a player up there with him, playing as the lone man is a tough ask and i think he is suffering for it.

He had Martin up with him who worked his butt off Macheda was not at his best passing particularly poor.
Good leaning for the youngsters, Sunderland were very physical and although we dominated possession did not do enough with it and let them bully us to easily, the Ref offered little protection ------- the only thing he did for us all night was sending De Laet off.

Are United players competing for the stupidist red card in history this season or something?

Why headbutt someone in the leg? Seriously

Up there with Scholes's 20 yard punch into the back of the net, and Vidic's completely pointless rollerelbow.

What was really stupid about that sending off was that De Laet seemingly got his first booking for getting up too quickly after one of their strikers tried to cut him in two.

What a shite game that was. 90 minutes of my life I can't get back and I can't think of anything positive to say about any United player. Apart from, maybe, Lee Martin (who's on borrowed time anyway IMO).

Mind you, he looks fecking miles better than Tosic. If I was picking a winger from our reserve squad Martin would be top of the pecking order, by a stretch.

I know it's far too early to make a judgment on Tosic, but first impressions lead me to hope that the majority of the combined £16m spent on the two Serbians was spent on Ljajic and hopefully that cost is reflected in his ability.

Well we haven't spent £16m.

By the sounds of things De Laet sounds liike a pretty pointless buy. Heres hoping Tosic isnt a flop either...

Wasn't really that pointless, allowed us to send players out on loan such as David Gray and James Chester and keep Cathcart at Plymouth

Nobody knows - United claim a load deal, Stoke claim a permanent deal. We'll find out in the summer I suppose. If it is a loan deal, i don't see him being offered a contract.

Doesn't really matter either way. It's a short term deal regardless and any expenditure will be minimal.

Chirag can get a wee bit obsessive about minor details is all ;)

I dunno - Stoke claimed it was a permanent deal, with a 3 year contract for Da Leet.

I think de laet was unluckly because his first booking ...was bizarre. He was the one fouled!!??? The second mutv were saying maybe as he cut across one of our other lads, his heels were tapped and he fell landing awkwardly

But it's still early days> don't think anyone should form an opinion yet and same obviously goes for tosic.

We talk about a settling in period - therefore you must reserve judgement. The reserves isn't for everyone. Some players react better to real football. Look for improvements NEXT season, not this (tosic)

As for de laet it's all about winning a contact for him but things can quickly change for people

While I agree in general that snap judgements aren't always correct or particularly useful, I don't think there's anything wrong with commenting on your initial impressions of someone after they've played a handful of games, especially in a case like de Laet's where no settling in period should really be necessary and he has until May to earn himself a longer stay with us.

'You must reserve judgement'? No. Final, conclusive judgement maybe, but there's nothing wrong with stating that de Laet has looked out of his depth so far and needs to show a hell of a lot of improvement if he's going to be here long-term.

With Tosic I'd agree that he needs to be given plenty of time, but there's nothing wrong with anyone saying he's looked unimpressive so far, because... well, he has.

I agree, you also have to take into account the previous reputation of the player and how highly etc he was thought of. Tosic was a star for a Serbia U21s who made it to the semi-finals I think in the Euros last years, has been a regular starter for Partizan and key to their success as well as picking up several Serbian national team caps and now having become a regular in their side. At 21, that is impressive so we can cut him some slack also because this is his first experience of playing football in England (after not having played football since early December).

In the case of De Laet, I don't think it would be wrong to say that we all were a little surprised with his signing - a player who left Antwerp in Belgium for Stoke and then never even played for one of the worst sides in the league. Shipped out on loan to a non-league side where he has been plying his trade until now. Given all of that, I think there were initially question marks over his ability and his several performances so far have been plagued by careless and thoughtless mistakes which have had a negative impact on the side. I'm not saying he's absolutely awful and hasn't done a thing right for us, just that he doesn't look good enough and given what he has done previously in his career - I can't really see him ever pushing for a first team place because I think the calibre of our own young defenders is significantly better than what he has offered and shown so far. I may be wrong, we'll see I guess.

Basically you think De Laet is crap as well :D
