RedCafe's top 25 footballers of all-time

Since I haven't seen a thread about at all before, I thought I'd try this out.

Basically, to compete, send me a list of your top 10 greatest footballers of all-time. Serious suggestions only please. No Eboue or Heskey.

Then, once I have the lists, I'll compile a final top 25 list counting from 25th to 1st. Participation from as many as possible would be welcome. Changed my mind in that I'll allow lists to be posted in the thread, to stop it from falling inactive within a matter of hours. You can still PM if you want to though. Leaving it up to each person to decide for themselves whether they're happy for it to be public or not.

Remember that's it for all-time as well, not just current.

Points will be in the following format for your top 10s.

1st-25 pts
2nd-18 pts
3rd-15 pts
4th-12 pts
5th-10 pts
6th-8 pts
7th-6 pts
8th-4 pts
9th-2 pts
10th-1 pt

Used this one since I want to give some extra weighting to each placing and the F1 system was the first that came to mind for me.

Any questions then feel free to inquire.

Think all time is too big a pool to get any sort of consensus. Some people will know more about older players and put them first, whereas others might not have even heard of them, Giuseppe Meazza for example or even obvious ones like Di Stefano.

Thought of that but a bit of variety won't do much harm. I can see where you're coming from but I thought I'd try it out since it's better to try a spread list like this instead of a predictable one like current footballer. If it fails it fails but might as well have a go.

That's fair enough. If you want to base it only off of players in the modern day that you've seen, but are still generally up there as top players, that's fine.

Sent it there, I wanted to base it entirely on player's I'd seen play, and not on reputation, so I don't have the likes of Maradona and Pele on my list.

Edited the OP. I'll allow people to post them in the thread to avoid it from falling inactive. Go ahead if you want to and haven't posted one yet.

Was worried about that sort of stuff myself but it should be okay. As long as not all are in here so no one else can compile the votes for a final list before I do so. I'd hope people have the ability to come up with their own.

Does my list still count?

Yes, of course, don't worry. Lists can be either PM'd or posted in here. I'll leave it to personal choice instead of forcing anything upon anyone. Both count. I'll make that clearer.

Best/Favourite players I've seen play;

1 Fat Ronaldo
2 Ronaldinho
3 Lionel Messi
4 Henrik Larsson
5 Thierry Henry
6 Zinedine Zidane
7 Cristiano Ronaldo
8 Roberto Baggio
9 Romario
10 Fransesco Totti

In no particular order and off the top of my head;

1 Lionel Messi
2 Ronaldinho
3 Fat Ronaldo
4 Henrik Larsson
5 Cristiano Ronaldo
6 Thierry Henry
7 Zinedine Zidane
8 Roberto Baggio
9 Romario
10 Georghe Hagi

Kind of hard to submit it when it's in no order. Will I go with how you've listen them there or do you want to change it?

I think you should only be able to mention players that you actually watch.

1. Messi
2. Pele
3. Maradona
4. Cruyff
5. Di Stefano
6. Best
7. Ronaldo (Brazilian)
8. Van Basten
9. Scholes
10. Maldini

Thanks to those who have sent and posted lists so far. Good response and all have been added to the current total.

1. Zinedine ZIDANE
2. Paul SCHOLES
3. Lionel MESSI
4. Cristiano RONALDO
5. RONALDO
6. Lothar MATTHAUS
7. Paolo MALDINI
8. Xavi
9. Andres INIESTA
10. Alessandro DEL PIERO

I have picked mine purely on based on a)who I have seen live and b) who I have watched enough to pass judgement. I know some of them are not the best 10 players off all time but I do not think I am in any way able to comment on people like BEST, Pele and Maradona etc. as I have not seen anything more than video footage of them!

Best I've seen:

1. Ronaldo (Brazilian)
2. Messi
3. Ronaldinho
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
5. Zinedine Zidane
6. Thierry Henry
7. Rivaldo
8. Maldini
9. Pirlo
10. Iniesta

If people only list those they've seen then you're not going to end up with who we collectively think are the best players of all time, and obviously people listing players they haven't seen is problematic.

It's simply people being asked who they think their all-time top 10 players are. I'm aware that it's not probably going to work out perfectly and that it may heavily lean towards today's player, but if it happens it happens. I'll see how it goes and just take the lists for now.

Good point but I don't think that people who were only born in the 80s should not be saying 'oh, George Best is the best player ever' or 'Pele is the best striker the world has seen' when the reality is that they have only ever seen video footage of them and most likely never even seen a full 90 minutes of their games.

Basically, it's all screwed up now Scrumpet has mentioned this and we are never, ever going to get an answer. A bit like I don't think I am ever going to see the end of The Sopranos

1. Maradona
2. Messi
3. F. Ronaldo
4. Ronaldinho
5. Maldini
6. Rivaldo
7. Romario
8. Schmeichel
9. Zidane
10. Hagi

Would be my first picks on the playground.

It'll be fine. We're never going to get a definitive answer and I don't expect one, just doing it to see how it turns out as it'll be interesting nevertheless.

It's not hard to find full matches featuring the standard of players that will be listed here tbh

Really??!??!? Not sure that you could find that many full 90 minutes of games involving players from pre-1970s! Especially players like Pele who played their entire career in Brazil.

I could be well wide of the mark here but just don't think that a lot of footage for some players will exist

1st-Maradona
2nd-Messi
3rd-Pele
4th-Di Stefano
5th-Best
6th-Baresi
7th-Eusebio
8th-Mattehaus
9th-Beckenbauer
10th-Puskas

Post a proper list or don't bother wasting my time at all.

The sad part about this is that Messi and Ronaldo are so far apart, when in all fairness like Souness mentioned they're probably the 2 best to ever play the game. Now I know, you can't compare, etc. but what I'm trying to say is that while Messi will be regarded as the best Ronaldo will be forgotten when talking about the best players because technicaly for the majority of the time he was #2. What I'm trying to say is that I guess he's just unlucky to play in this particular Messi era, who in all honesty is already breaking records and he's not even 25.

That's true, but I still expect he'll be held in very high regard at the end of his career. Not as good as Messi, but he'll be regarded as an all-time great anyway.

Ok If its a list of player I have actually seen play full matches and properly:

1. Messi
2. Maradona
3. Ronaldinho
4. Ronaldo
5. C. Ronaldo
6. Maldini
7. Scholes
8. Rivaldo
9. Schmeichel
10. Nedved

Not seen much of the other greats enough (highlights and 2-3 matches at most).

He's already had 5 mentions which is good going for any list of all-time greats and is a long way ahead of others regarded as best of their era (e.g. Di Stefano) or next best (e.g. Platini).
