I don't think Class of 92 has got anything to do with it (certainly doesn't influence me), its a name made up by the media. Being part of the Class of 92 doesn't make Scholes a great player.... or Giggs/Beckham good players does it? It certainly made Phil Neville look decent (when he wasn't).

Do you think Ferguson ("Mr Ruthless") really picked him for hundreds of games while thinking "its ok, the rest of the team will cover for him"? And more than one England managers picked him for dozens of international games while thinking "he's okaaaay I guess"?

I guess I am particularly biased by his performances against Shaun Goater back in the early 2000s. He does have the advantage of the full-back not being that important during the earlier part of his career and there not being much competition. I guess it is also a matter of taste. I would prefer Rafael any day over him, Evra as a full-back over him in terms of contribution to the team. The thing with G.Neville is he was never a stand-out performer in the team.

Apart from Amadeus's comments, that's the most standout comment I've ever seen on Redcafe.

I'm tempted to make a thread for that - "Denis Irwin or Rafael?".... see how it goes.....:cool:
 
Neville was a bloody excellent right back. There hasn't been a better one in the Premiership. People don't seem to remember how good he was, possibly because of the extremely dodgy last year, possibly because of the (completely inaccurate but seemingly popularly believed) rhetoric that he was a limited player and work rate and mentality was all he had.
 
He was the second best crosser in that team behind Beckham, who is probably the best crosser of all time. G Nev was absolutely outstanding as a FB.
 
Surprised Fletcher & Choccy never made it to top 50 considering some of the names that did.
