Music RedCafe's Favourite Albums Of All Time Contest (Round 9)

Round 5 getting hate but Hybrid Theory was a seminal album for LP and nu metal as a genre. Marshall Mathers turned Eminem from a star into a superstar and Whatever People Say I Am... put Arctics on the map. Haven't heard the other two.

But saying that, I don't really listen to these anymore so maybe it's a longevity thing.

Hybrid Theory a seminal album... it was pretty big in nu metal but even in that genre it wouldn't win out compared to the first few albums from Korn or Slipknot surely?

I think the thing for me about round 5 is that mostly they are super dated. They're products of their time, as many albums are, but they don't transcend that time. They were all good at the time but how do they stack up now ? Marshall Mathers LP suffers particularly from the Edge lord lyrics.

You can say that about many albums surely? I tried listening to Abbey Road at the start of this contest and pissed myself laughing at how shite it sounds. I'm sure it's great but seriously, I can't see how anyone can listen to that now for the first time and think it's anything but a disgrace (bar a few tracks obviously). I expect a bullet to hit me in the back any minute now, probably from Solius.

Also, I don't think Slipknot or Korn got a single vote yet Hybrid Theory smashed its decade. Just saying

I like you

I've always thought you're a great guy.

1. The Queen is Dead (The Smiths)
2. Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division)
3. Closer (Joy Division)
4. The Velvet Underground & Nico (The Velvet Underground & Nico)
5. London Calling (The Clash)
6. Doolittle (The Pixies)
7. OK Computer (Radiohead)
8. The Suburbs (Arcade Fire)
9. Is This It? (The Strokes)
10. The Doors (The Doors)

If it helps, I've never even heard of The Strokes until this contest and haven't listened to anything Radiohead have made. I don't think I'm the right host for this
This you?

First two tracks on that are Come Together and Something? So unless you listened out of order? Maxwell's Silver Hammer/Octopus Garden are silly jovial tracks but they're addictive and basically what the Beatles did back then considering they were always on drugs.

Oh I skipped the first couple tracks as I knew those songs. I just wanted to get a feel for it. But yeah, not for me at all. From the albums I listened to from this contest, Arcade Fire - The Suburbs sounds pretty decent. Safe to say, I will go through all the finalists over 2025, maybe I'll find more that I like/educate myself.

You can say that about many albums. Just not ones you would put on a best albums of all time list.

Anyway, you've gone too far this time in comparing Something to One Step Closer...*Please mods etc*....

To be fair, Beatles albums are a chore to listen to. They have good singles. But I can’t stand their albums.

1) Apetite for Destruction (Guns n' Roses)
2) Nevermind (Nirvana)
3) The Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
4) Abbey Road (The Beatles)
5) Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin)
6) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)
7) Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
8) Rumours (Fleetwood Mac)
9) The Doors (The Doors)
10) Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park)

True. It's no comparison. One Step Closer is much better.

  1. Nevermind
  2. In Utero
  3. Led Zepellin IV
  4. The Doors
  5. Unknown Pleasures
  6. Closer
  7. Revolver
  8. The Bends
  9. OK Computer
  10. Abbey Road

1. Hybrid theory
2. Nevermind
3. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
4. Marshall Mathers LP
5. OK Computer

Wow, the albums post-2000 are really bad compared to the 20th century.

1. Led Zeppelin IV
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7. London Calling
8. Illmatic
9. Thriller
10. Wish You Were Here

The only inclusion that baffles me is Linkin Park. TBH&C I'm surprised by, but then I voted for it so not complaining. And Round 7 was always going to be completely random, so no expectations there.

Beyond that they're all albums that regularly appear on these sort of lists.

1. Nevermind (Nirvana)
2. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (Arctic Monkeys)
3. The Velvet Underground & Nico (The Velvet Underground & Nico)
4. Never Mind The Bollocks (Sex Pistols)
5. Thriller (Michael Jackson)
6. In Utero (Nirvana)
7. Doolittle (Pixies)
8. Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division)
9. The Suburbs (Arcade Fire)
10. Is This It? (The Strokes)

If it helps, I've never even heard of The Strokes until this contest and haven't listened to anything Radiohead have made. I don't think I'm the right host for this

I saw The Strokes perform at Rock en Seine a few years ago and I thought their set was horrible. For some reason, they were selected as the band to close out the weekend, and it was just a piss poor set. The back and forth Julian Casablancas had with the crowd was awkward as feck, monotone at times, and very long in between songs. The songs themselves didn't really resonate with the crowd, too. It was a combination of wrong act, wrong time, and overall poor performance. Massively overrated band, imo.

You should give Radiohead a try though, but do it chronologically. Even if you only listen to The Bends and OK Computer, that'll be enough. They're a great band. I must say that they personally peaked around Kid A for me. In Rainbows was great, but I found the two albums after that to lack that early energy which I massively preferred.

My choices are:

1. Doolittle - The Pixies
2. The Bends - Radiohead
3. Discovery - Daft Punk
4. In Utero - Nirvana
5. Nevermind - Nirvana
6. Revolver - The Beatles
7. Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
8. Random Access Memories - Daft Punk
9. To Pimp A Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
10. Illmatic - Nas

I've got mates who've sen them live that said they're fantastic so it's hard to tell based on a single gig.

I don't really think they're overrated though. It's not like they're that much in the public consciousness or one of those ones people tag onto because it's cool. They're rated mainly because of Is This It? Their albums after that were decent to ok but TNA was a return to form imo. They're just a solid band who have made a couple of really good albums.

Thanks, I'll give Radiohead a go, mainly because I like your list as it has both Daft Punk albums on there.

The idea of DS trying to listen to Kid A is making me laugh

DS if he ever listened to Loveless at a decent volume

If I could use a metaphor I'd say that musically @Dirty Schwein can only see in 2 Dimensions. He's like a cartoon character who has no concept of what the 3D world is.
