Austrians buy F1 team
From correspondents in Vienna
November 15, 2004

AUSTRIAN energy drink firm Red Bull has taken over the Jaguar Formula One team from Ford, Red Bull's owner told a newspaper here today.

"It is true, we bought Jaguar Racing at the weekend," Red Bull's billionaire owner, Dietrich Mateschitz, is quoted as saying by Austria's Salzburger Nachrichten on its website.

Mateschitz's comments confirmed media reports that a deal had been reached just before tonight's (AEDT) deadline for entries to the 2005 championship.

But he did not say how much Red Bull had paid.

Ford have spent about $US2 million ($2.6m) a week keeping the team afloat since the end of the season that finished last month.

The takeover should secure the future of the 300-strong Milton Keynes-based team and end talk of other Formula One teams having to run three cars next year to make up the numbers on an otherwise depleted grid.

Mateschitz said he could not provide job guarantees but added that he had no plans to change the team's leadership in the short term, the newspaper said.

Asked whether the team would sign Austrian driver Christian Klien, who made his F1 debut at Jaguar last season and was sponsored by Red Bull, Mateschitz said he will be considered.

"Like other drivers, he will come to testing as of late November," said Mateschitz. "But it is true that a second season for Christian after his debut would make sense."

Australia's Mark Webber drove for Jaguar this year but has already signed to move to the Williams team for next season.

The team will use a Cosworth engine this season because there is too little time to make changes to the car's design, the newspaper said.

"But I can imagine a change in 2006," said Mateschitz.

Red Bull will end its sponsorship of the Swiss-based Sauber team, the newspaper reported.

Red Bull was involved with the now-defunct Arrows team and has been involved in Formula One and motor racing for years as well as in a range of action sports.

Good news that all the teams should be back for another bash next season.

Some of the details might not be so good for Team Red Bull or whatever he wants to call it. For starters, the Jaguar management that he seems not want to replace immediately, wouldn't fill me with confidence. Jaguar was long considered a mangerial basket case in F1, and although they did less of the hiring and firing of late, they didn't improve very much. Also, engine wise, they are going to struggle big time. If they are using Cosworth, then I assume that is last years Cosworth as they've pulled out of the game haven't they? It was hardly a rocket in the first place and not having any proper development isn't going to make it any quicker. The chassis development has been disrupted, the continuity required to build and evolve what they already had (which was rubbish) has surely been compromised, again the bottom line of this is lost time on the circuit. Whole seconds though, not the odd tenth.

Now Klien. Not the worst driver by any stretch, he showed in his debut year that he has a bit going for him - but if he is kept on, he's the man they'll be looking at to provide the motivation, continuity and results to try and get this thing off the ground - don't see that happening.

Despite the net effect of simply rebranding Jaguar, this is actually a new team -as was witnessed by BAR taking over Tyrell and Jaguar themselves taking over Stewart. Therefore they are starting almost from scratch and will have the added disadvantage of a young driver and guaranteed poor competitveness.

They need as much help as they can get, and they need it as cheap as possible. An experienced driver as number 2 should be high on the list, preferably one who can bring sponsorship with him, or at least drive for peanuts.

David Coulthard, I'm looking in your direction. Stop embarassing yourself over at Williams and make a difference with team that really needs you.

Glad to see that Jaguar will be sticking around.

I agree with you here that DC could do something at Jag......I rekon he could get a drive hear without a doubt.

fecking brilliant to see the team been kept in F1. Am glad to see Jordan have struck up an engine deal, Eddie Jordan is one of the best characters in F1.

I am hoping that DC sings for willaims, but any drive is a good thing for him, and im sure his experience will be useful to a new team.

I've decided I'm going to support this new team next season. I'm fairly neutral on supporting people or teams since Irvine left, although Montoya makes me shout at the telly which is a good sign, and I like Button's approach, but I've made my mind up about the new Red Bull team.

They are offically cool and I'm supporting them. They may be shite, but that's not the point.

Why would they still be called jaguar. That would imply that ford still had something to do with them.
As for supporting the red bull team, i agree. I alwasy liked Jaguar, and stewart before them, so why not keep supporting this team

Definately no Jaguar link anymore. 100% proof is I just got an email from Jaguar Racing telling me that under data protection laws they could not lawfully pass on my details to Red Bull Racing.

I think Frank Williams would rather give himself a drive than let DC behind the wheel of a Williams again

Bad news for DC - Red Bull have blanked him. Klien has a contract for next year (although maybe not in a race seat, but it's still early days), and that leaves two more seats open. The favourites are Liuzzi the Italian F3000 driver (and rumoured Ferrari protege) and my choice, the amazing AJ Allmendinger from the US.

As a customer deal?

There is going to be quite a few customer deals done in the near future I reckon and if I were them I'd wait until next season gets going before they make a decision. Nobody knows the full potential of the Toyota for example, or how the manufacturers will adjust to the new engine regulations. A ferrari deal is always a possibility also if they are seen to be grooming Vitantonio Liuzzi.

BMW obviously make a good engine, but they seem to be reluctant to commit fully to the game, they always seem to be on the verge of walking away. That may not be true, but that's the impression I get. They've started a junior formula too, but have allowed it to go a little flat.

Yeah as a customer deal I guess, the owner of Red Bull says they have a good relationship with BMW.

Btw the livery of Red Bull looks exactly the same as a red Bull can on 4 wheels

Of coz you do. After all, it's your all time favourite drink. :smirk::D

Looks like Dc is favourite to sign for the team, after an impressive test session. Hope he does, coz hes a good driver and deserves a seat next year.

Williams dismiss Coulthard.

He's signed a short term one year deal with Red Bull Racing.

I'll have to re-evaluate my supporting strategy on foot of this development.

jaysus miley, it's hardly the same thing.

Excuse the cliche, but United is a way of life, Red Bull is a brand that has just signed a journeyman. My supporting strategy will now stall until I find out the name of the second driver.

You'd do well not to drag United into Red Bull Racing. It's not the same thing. I shag other birds, but I won't leave the girlfriend.....etc.....maybe I'm not wise giving you that much credit but anyway......do you live on a farm?

Good signing by Red Bull, a proven race winner & plenty of experience at the highest level.
It could have been worse they could have signed Irvine.

I bet he sits on his boat thinking about his 4 race victories & patting himself on the back for all his wonderful lifelong acheivements.
Fair play to him though, made his money from limited talent & can now live an easy life.

He's achieved more than Kryten. Would Eddie have won the 1999 Championship if he was in a McLaren?

I bet Coulthard sits in his Monaco hotel convincing himself that he's not the laughing stock of motor racing. Imagine touting yourself for the Williams job, then accepting a one year deal from a back of the grid outfit instead. He'd want to be careful that Red Bull don't sign a half decent driver - wouldn't want to break the decade long habit of being thrashed by your team mate. What's his salary at Red Bull then?
