Rebuilding the squad with youth players

Ah yes the infamous class of 99. Its a tall order to replicate the likes of Wes Brown, Jonathan Greening and Ronnie Wallwork. :D
 oops I must be getting old

Realistically the only guys who will or might have a role next season are Garner and Elanga who obviously has one now. The others should get good loans like Garner's. Hannibal the only guy from this who might have enough to make it he jump directly, but he'll be a very sparsely used young player given his competition.

Garner has done his loan time, and looks to have really use it well, (unlike so many of our loan player seem to do), so of them all I'd say he really deserves a chance now.

Obviously Elanaga is already there, in fact I'd like to see him play a bit less.

That’s a good point. I hope he’s not the best of them…

I don’t think you can say that only Garner/Elanga/Hannibal will feature. When a young player clicks with the manager and that manager trusts he will deliver on his instructions then that player will play. For example, who’s to say he might really like Brandon Williams and play him every week….

The player has to actually be good enough in the first place...
It's highly unlikely these other youngsters who haven't done much on loan in lower competitions will all of a sudden be thrown in by Ten Hag. He's not Van Gaal who will throw players like Blackett or Borthwick Jackson in against Arsenal and just trust them. He's the type of manager where young players have to prove it for him first.

We gotta be realistic. No manager who wants to do well is going to just throw a bunch of 17 or 18 year olds who haven't yet stood out that much into the starting 11 with an expectation of challenging. His priority isn't youth development. It's to be successful.

My guess is:
  • Elanga plays the most of the young players. But is just 4th choice wide player
  • Garner either gets a loan in the PL now or is just depth for Fred probably next to the starting DM.
  • Hannibal gets some fringe player minutes and easy subs to transition. Possibly a loan though
  • Amad needs a loan where he actually plays
  • Laird needs a loan
  • Garnacho probably will stay in the reserves with the odd first team squad but unlikely to get many minutes
  • Shoretire same as Garnacho
People need to temper expectations. None of these youth players are Greenwood level, and it's not like he was an instant key player.

A lot of posters are missing the point of the original post, whether intentionally so or not.

He's not saying build the side with these kids, merely fill the squad with some of them.

We're potentially losing about 7 or 8 players this summer, no-one in the world can surely believe we'll be bringing 7 or 8 quality signings in?

Speaking of this lad, I was at Wycombe v Burton away yesterday, and he started for them.
I don't remember him standing out at all yesterday. It just seems utterly baffling he was starting premier league games for us.

I think we are all in agreement that the squad needs a huge rebuild this summer and we have a lot of players due to leave such as Mata, Matic, Cavani, Lingard, Pogba and probably a few other sales.

I would suggest it's going to be difficult to bring in enough players with the likely budget we will have so we may need to rely on the youth to at least cover some squad positions. I think we have some young players who are very talented and probably close to getting game time. Which young players would you like to see in the squad next season?

For me I'd love to see the following players in and around the first team:

Laird
Garner
Hannibal
Amad
Elanga
Shoretire
Garnacho (probably more of a wildcard due to his age and may need a bit more time before he is ready)

There is nothing to indicate that Shoretire, Hannibal and Amad are ready to play for the first team. I even question Laird due to his injury struggles

CBJ was a loose cannon even at reserve-level, he just got a freak chance due to a thin squad and lots of injuries
