Rebuilding Real Madrid - how do you do it? | Buy well

Because they kept winning champions leagues.

But as they kept improving they kept downgrading the squad. In Zidanes last season they sold James, Pepe and Morata who all made a decent contribution to the league winning season. None of them were replaced. Same with Ronaldo.
Isn't James still on their books ?

It's a different world for Madrid in terms of rebuilding than it was a decade ago. Top players are extremely overpriced so they can't just go and buy several world class players like they used to. They'll need a manager that can rebuild the team by investing in potential instead of ready made. The fans will also need to be more patient because it won't be easy.

Klopp would be perfect for Madrid. High intense football, lots of goals and has the character. He also has no issues with wind in Madrid so no slip ups in that respect. Poor guy has suffered twice this season so far.

Player wise, Hazard is the obvious but they also need a player who has 30 goals a year in them. For me Mbappe is made for Madrid in the centre with Junior/Assensio one side and Hazard the other. They need a couple of midfielders and as much as i dont want it to ever happen, Pogba would be a great addition to play alongside Kante and Kroos. Defence is okay but Liigt would add youth and strength and robertson at left back would ensure someone with energy.

Courtois
Ramos Varne Liigt Robertson
Kante Kroos Pogba
Hazard Mbappe Assensio/Junior

Mix of youth and experience, power and pace.

Will have to offload some of the kids like Vallejo and Vazquez, some past it like Bale and Modric and bring in a CB, probably 2 CM and 2 wingers.

They started rebuilding years ago, just look at their signings. Looking at their 25 man squad they have only player that they have bought recently that's with them and isn't considered young is Courtois and he's a 26 year old goalkeeper. They have 5 players that are 30 years or older. They don't really need that much considering the amount of talent in the squad. What they have had to do is to replace 2 different Ballon d'Or players, one of whom is still with them and is their best player but getting on. That's no easy task and meanwhile their rivals still have the best player to have graced a football pitch playing in a squad that might be the biggest spender (at least in the top 3) for the past 3 seasons.

When I take that into account I don't think the difference between the teams is shocking. It's normal. What's shocking is losing 4-1 at home to Ajax, albeit a very good Ajax team in the CL, which means two of their biggest losses ever in Europe under the same caretaker manager who's clearly not up for the job. Look at Ramos. Gets wilfully sent off in the first leg. Why? Thinks the job's done because why else. That's the captain doing this and this sort of attitude is contagious. Leading up the this match they are mentally battered by a better Barcelona team leaving them jaded an unmotivated. Their 18 year old starlet limps of crying like a 6 month old and their money man is constantly being booed by the fans because they're fans notoriously suck.

Honestly I think they're just "an Ole" away from showing good football again. They had one who just left after 3 consectively succesful seasons so a lull isn't the end of the world.

I feel Madrid and Barca won 4 champion leagues in recent years was much down to their top centre midfield players

Any successful team need that so I start with replacing aged midfield first

It’s a galactico team. They’ve never won anything without a team containing big star names. Clubs should stay true to their culture. They should try to court Mbappe, Pogba, Hazard, De Bruyne, De Gea etc. It would take a few iterations of this for sure but that’s Real way of doing things.

Mourinho back in.

Get Hazard, Sandro, Icardi and Salah. Recall James.

Ship off Bale, Marcelo, Modric, Mariano and Benzema.

Courtois
Carvajal - Varane - Ramos - Sandro
Casemiro - Kroos
James
Salah - Icardi - Hazard

Subs: Navas, Odriozola, Nacho, Cabellos, Isco, Vinicius.

I wouldn't rule them out from doing in one season like they did in 2009 so ruthlessly.

Buy 5 world-class players and the job is done.

That is harder than ever now thought.

We are on our 8th fecking season of rebuilding sideways.

Hazard is likely. Eriksen certainly very possible given his contract and Spurs wage policy.

Kane no chance.

feck me I wish we could say we had a shot with players of that caliber this summer. We just can't buy from the PL these days. They refuse to sell to us and have the money to say no.

Not panic and accept that after winning 4 champions leagues in 5 years and losing one of the greatest all time players, you're going to go through a bit of a lean spell. Same will happen to Barca once Messi leaves them.
Adjust expectations and slowly wait for everyone around the club to be comfortable with the new expectations and build back up from there. Constantly chasing the past glories wont ever work.

This.

The idea that players like KDB, Salah, Pogba, Kane, Neymar, etc. are attainable is simply ridiculous now.

Given their contract situations, however, Hazard and Eriksen look possible. And anyone else not playing at a coined up top team.

No, let them spend some time in the wilderness. We should all be focused on wanting Man Utd in the best possible moment before worrying about another club's decline.

They have had their time in the spotlight.

With the expectations at that club and how they are run, they are perpetually on the brink of meltdown and imo the only thing thats kept them stable for so long is a very talented core and massive investment.

Now that core is gone or aging, and throwing money at the problem alone wont suffice to keep them on the top.

Don't you think getting any big player these days is impossible? Nowadays all we see is young talents quoted for bizarre prices but rarely see any big player linked with a move.

(new thread as the other Real thread seems to be focused on current season performances).

Barcelona finally beating Real on overall head to head, another poor domestic league season, major squad surgery required and a new manager. How would you go about the rebuild?

I haven't been keeping that close an eye on La Liga, so I'm curious to hear what others think. Real seem to go through a major rebuild only once or twice in a decade.

Here's mine:

Transfer in:
Hazard
Eriksen
Icardi/Werner
Rabiot

Transfer out:
Bale

Manager: Allegri

Eriksen and Hazard will be running down contracts and should be negotiable. Icardi is souring ties with Inter, but might bring his drama into the Real dressing room so it's more him vs Timo Werner. Rabiot is great value on a free.

If they have money to spend then a leader of a centre back is required.
Sale:
Bale
Marcelo
Isco

In
Hazard
Koulibably
Militao
Eriksen
Icardi
Rodrigo
Rabiot
Alex Sandro

Players
1. CF/#9 (Kane or Icardi)
2. CM to replace Modric
3. Backup DM (unless Kante is available)
4. CB to compete and replace Ramos
5. More defensive RB

Dont really need Hazard and Bale should be sold

Hire an experienced manager that can handle the pressure of delivering immediately (Allegri, Ancelotti, Conte, Mourinho etc)

Spend a billion dollars on Kane, Hazard and Eriksen.

Real Madrid will get their act together eventually. Splash cash, finally land a compatible manager and boom cycle of success starts again.

Courtois
Bale Maguire Boateng Vinicius
Kroos Casemiro
Willian Fellaini Perisic
Benzema

Manager: Mourinho

Not nearly enough players out.

The title of the thread is "rebuild" and some are suggesting Mourinho. You hire Mourinho when you have the team.

Please take Klopp. He can take Salah and Virgil with him. It’s less windy in Spain, so he’ll love it.

Just not sure how long he’d last with his cup final record

They were pretty good in the first half of the first classico against Barcelona in the cup. Then lost second half 3 0 and downhill from there. Losing 2 classicos in a row at home knocked the stuffing out of them.

RM have a good squad, they need a goal scorer most importantly, and to replace Modric. Bale also needs to go probably. With maybe 3 signings and a new manager they can be back at the top. Fairly sure they already approached Poch and want Eriksen as well. Maybe Hazard, Mbappe possible too.

Hopefully they get Jose so they stay away from our boys

Basically Pogba

For everyone saying sell bale, who is going to buy him on 600k a week?
He may be worth 50m or so but his wages on even a short 3 year contract will be 93.6m.
Real will realise £0 or even have to pay to get rid of him even if they do find a buyer.

If they're genuinely interested in rebuilding with their talented youngsters rather than spending a fortune on galacticos then Pochettino is ideal.

He could probably bring Eriksen and Alderweireld with him on the cheap.

Get Jose in as manager, buy Lukaku and Sanchez for. 100million each, as the players to transform their attack. Sorted :p

Funny how the Real fans on here shot me down in October when I said this was the worst Real team in 15 years. They need to spend BIG, but I can't help but think they don't have the disposable income they once did.

I think a new coach, a goal scorer and a good dribbler will be most important for them. Isco could actually grow into a Modric replacement but I really can't see Benzema becoming a striker that offers the output they need again. Hazard is really a must for them and once he's there they'll create enough chances again. But they really should break the bank for someone that consistently offers 25+ goals a season. There will also be many minor challenges, like fitting Vinicius in the lineup when Hazard is there, bring some fresh blood into the midfield to challenge Kroos and Modric and so forth. However, a new coach could very well get some of those stars back in form. Kroos still has 3-4 years in him, Marcelo 2-3. Modric enters an age which is actuqlly too progressed for someone with his work rate but he still looks fit.

Good thing for them is they haven't invested in years so they and considering their income they probably can spend big. With Rodrygo they also have another exceptional talent in the pipeline and Asensio is still there, too.

Weird thing is, they have repared for the time 3-5 years after Cristiano but apparently not for this year. Strange that they didn't invest when this summer really. Not only because of the Ronaldo exit but also because this team sold themselves way better than they actually were in the CL. The decline was there to see and I doubt Perez overlooked it. Seems more like they willingly gave up this season which would be weird considering they theoretically could've retained the CL for a third time in row if they had invested the money they'll now have to invest anyway.

Amen to this, wish we’d had this mentality when SAF retired.
