in defense they have top 3 Ballon D’or contender in Varane,
best defender/leader last season in Ramos, best full back in Marcelo and Carvajal
Best GK option in Navas and Courtois
In attack they still have Bale and Benzma, who are supposed to shine this season without having play 2nd fiddle to Ronaldo, and also Isco and Ascensio, some of the best young talents around.
Basically they are generally rated as easily the best squad in the world, minus Ronaldo plus Courtois.
They are either great squad in some unexplainable bad form, or just massively overrated on paper. Either way it getting just like us during Moyes/LVG/Mourinho era.
(Best squad in Premierleague but finished 7th during Moyes era, most expensive squad in world but currently struggle to stay top 6 in league)

Football is about quality, but at the same time players need to maintain their level which is really hard actually.
Only Messi and Cr7 reached and maintained top level for almost 10 years, the others at best can reach 5 years and thats it.
Even Maradona didn't have more than 6 years at top level, then the rest of his career was inconsistent.
A lot of RM players already reached their peak.
And RM struggling in La Liga is not actually new, it happened many times with other great players.

I remember when Ronaldo didn't score for Juve in the first 2-3 games and Benzema scored 2-3 goals at that time. Suddenly people were saying that Ronaldo's goals were mostly because of Madrid's midfield and without him Benzema will start to score some crazy amounts of goals... Now its clear that they needed new striker.
Even Barcelona are not ripping up the league this season. Makes me wonder where they would be now if Messi had left in the summer.

But the problem is City have 35 whilst Barca only have 25.
I really hope that we'd tell Bale to F off if Madrid finally want shut of him, but no doubt we'll be there wagging our tail again.
Their stats last year were amazing, but then you watched the team and it was hard to see the great team the table made them out to be. Madrid's drop off is not surprising, an old squad, most of their key players in their late 20's early 30's, and coming off numerous long seasons with international tournaments behind them. Now trying to integrate younger players and it is a mess. They have the money to find their way out quickly but it could be a transitional period.
Barca have already started a rebuild, with Arthur, Dembele, Semedo, Umtiti, Lenglet, Ter Stegen. Group there at the right age to move forward with over the next few years.
This bunch was already unmotivated enough after the 3 out 4 period, so what to expect after the 4 out of 5 one. I think Real Madrid nowadays is one of the biggest examples of death by success I can remember in football. Results should be worse if the squad is worse of course, but not as bad as in the last months. If Florentino doesn't sign a couple of big names in January this will be a very clear transitional season.

RM in a nutshell:
Courtois - Didn't bring much to the table or justified his fee. Right now it seems like a downgrade from Navas
Ramos - Probably one of the best defenders going forward but his skills as a defender are borderline average and is pretty much red card prone
Varane - Since he came from the WC looks like a Championship defender.
Marcelo - Didn't expect him to decline this much. Easily one of the players I always highly rated in that RM squad
Kroos - Doesn't give 2 f*cks anymore. Looks like he is ready to retire
Modric - Last season he was mediocre most games but everyone seemed to forget that because of his WC performances. Most likely he will win a Ballon'or when you can easily pick a few players that are better than him in his position atm.
Asensio - Cleary overrated in the past. Last season saved RM in a couple of games but after that, I struggle to remember a single game where he showed half the potential people thought he had
Benzema - Benzema being Benzema pretty much. Still has a decent goal record this season although he is probably one of the worst finishers I ever saw. Can't score a tap-in even if his grandma life depended on that.
Bale - Can't remember a more overrated player tbh. Every season he has a couple good games, scores in a final and people forget how sh*t he was 90% of the time (+ the injuries).
I believe that Florentino wanted to prove that Real Madrid without Ronaldo would still be the same Real Madrid that dominated Europe so he didn't even bother to buy proper reinforcements to minimize the impact of him leaving (although they would still have a lot of problems even if he stayed). They lack a real leader that never gives up and wants to win no matter what. Having a player that scores 40+ games a season helps to disguise the team's flaws as well.

Pretty much all this. Their squad is quite similar to the one Moyes inherited - a mix of winners on the decline (Ramos/Marcelo, Rio/Evra), some youth who don't seem to possess outstanding potential (Asensio/Welbeck), declining, aging or crocked forwards (Benzema/Bale, Rooney/RvP).
Eerie similarity. Perez needs to choose the next manager carefully, or Real could spiral into a few years of mediocrity. Of course, even their standards of mediocrity are likely to be higher than the depths we plumbed thanks to Ed and the managers he hired, but it would still be a phase of decline.
Never thought that i would read this about RM but everything is just about right. They didn't invest in the first team after James. That's what you get when you let your team stale

They were like this last season too. Ronaldo had scored 4 league goals up until Christmas and Madrid were trailing Barca by 11 points, having lost the Clasico 0-3 at home as well. They only turned it on in about 3 CL games, got dominated in the others (still somehow won due to opponents gifting goals left and right). Zidane did an incredible job as a Voodoo Shaman.
