That's a bonkers argument. Should motor cyclists also not wear helmets so they will drive slower and pose less of a danger to themselves? I dont think players are going to start kicking each other on the head to test out how sturdy the helmet is.
The amount of dangerous and reckless play in the NFL increased with the increased amount of protection, at least from what I have read in the past.
I'm not against any protection in principle (I'm not against shin pads) but you have to recognise that as things become "safer" players take more risks. Stirling Moss said this of F1 drivers. They take far more risks today than they would in the 60s because today they would probably just have an uncomfortable crash whereas in the 60s they could have died.
