Rasmus Højlund | Signed for United

Hojlund plus a marquee signing = maybe £160-190m.

With ffp limiting our total spend (regardless of owner) and the need to also get in good players in midfield, defence and goalkeeper, I think this feels extremely unlikely.

It's going to be difficult to sell Martial, by the way on his wages and with his injury record.

I agree that we need 2 strikers, by the way, but I think one of them is going to have to be a value signing.

Yeah someone like Thuram fits that value signing as free agent, would also throw in this Retegui who scored against England

We still need a backup striker though
We do. Think we'll need to be creative with this one. Looking at strikers who are out of contract in 2024, how about Morata? Could be available relatively cheaply. Ideal backup actually.

Or maybe look at relegated teams
Che Adams?

What I think will happen - we'll have to keep Martial and we'll only buy one striker and hope that Martial and Rashford will cover where necessary. Not ideal.

If this guy is gettable for £40m tops, then I’d chance it. Bargain in this climate for a prospect like him.

Would rather keep Weghorst than get Che Adams.

Yes fair enough! I just don't think I can cope with another season of Weggers galloping around in slow motion, and missing crosses because it takes 2 seconds for neural signals to reach his legs.

Moussa Dembele/Thuram on a free?

Thuram looks pretty average. Less bodies more quality please.

For free, in a position where we have neither bodies nor quality right now, I'd take average as a backup striker. Especially with also having Rashford as an option there as well.

My ideal summer would involve two striker signings, with one being a young prospect.

I like him a lot but he is in the same boat as Ferguson and Sesko etc in that their quality and talent is undeniable but they need regular gametime to keep developing. Which they won't get here. But if they wait to move, and they continue to progress they will be prohibitively expensive.
Sure, let him go to Dortmund and develop for a few more years before we have to cough up no less than 100 millions for that club.

Any Danish reds want to give us an honest opinion on the lad? Have to admit I've never heard of him.

He's doing well so far, but it's way too early to say if he's the real deal. Every year we see a handful of young 18-20 year old players who show a lot of promise but never develop into a top-tier player in the long run, and I can't say that it's obvious to me that he isn't one of those. He scored quite a few goals at Sturm Graz, but that's the Austrian league so I don't know how much that's worth. Now he has scored 8 goals in 25 appearances for Atalanta, which isn't exactly Haaland-level. He generally plays well when I watch him and he shows a lot of promise, but I'm guessing he would cost a lot and I have to say it would be a gamble. He's just as likely to be another Martial as the next big thing.

His goals for Denmark are such a small sample size that it doesn't say much. If we could get him for like £30-40m, I'd say it's worth a shot. If he costs twice that, I'd be hesitant because he's still rather unproven in the grand scheme of things. He has had a single season in a "real league," and while he has done fairly well there, he hasn't taken Italy by storm and put out incredible numbers. Eight goals in 25 appearances isn't exactly astonishing. In terms of what they'd done before coming to United (if he comes), I was more optimistic about Antony than I would be about Højlund. He has not yet made me feel like he's definitely the next big thing, but I'd be happy to give him the opportunity of the fee isn't ridiculous.

I'd rather have Osimhen. If we make Højlund our primary striker target this summer and get only him, I'd be worried. He might live up to the expectations, but I don't think it's highly likely that he will. I give it a 50/50 chance whether he'll be the main striker at a top club in a few years, or playing for Celta Vigo or something. It's nowhere near a sure thing that he'll grow into a top striker. Osimhen will cost a lot more, but he's a much safer bet as well. If we could get both, I'd be ecstatic. If we get just Osimhen, I'll be satisfied. If we get only Højlund, I'll be very nervous and I think the club would be gambling too big on a definite maybe. We need a dependable striker right now, and a prospect for the future would have to be a side-dish.

So Harry Kane/Osimhen as the primary striker target, and this guy as a young backup.

Unless he has a release clause, we're not getting him cheap, look what Atalanta asked for Amad who was a youth team player. They're going to ask £50m+ for him.

Agree. It’s a year too late again. Once these young strikers are at a club like Atalanta, Dortmund, Leipzig, you can expect to pay a premium.

That said, I think the players are making the right decisions in going to clubs where they will get regular game time in the first team.

There are better backup options to Thuram though, maybe not a on free.

I’d rather get in hojlund and say kane. Would be a similar setup to city with Alvarez biding his time behind Haaland but getting enough game time to still develop.

Yeah that is an interesting idea, however not convinced we sign two strikers for money

I don't see us signing two strikers at all really. These young prospects want to play and not be second fiddle to a £100m man. I think it is more likely that we'll sign one of Kane, Osimhen or Ramos and see the return of Greenwood.
They would get lots of game time. Kane will be 30 and have 3-4 years top left at the elite level and we have would still have 4 competitions to play in. I'd imagine the young prospects would also love to learn from an elite striker such as Kane.

I really hope we don't see the return of Greenwood. That recording showed us everything about who he really is and his inclusion would isolate us from many sponsorships.

This one strikes me as a bit preemptive. I don't think he's ready to be our main striker, he's only just moved from Denmark to the Italian league. Personally think he could do with another full season of football to see how he develops. Whether the economics work as a second striker signing I don't know, that would make more sense but in general I wonder if he'd be better served just staying there a bit longer. Not that football usually works like that.

He seems to be signing up with a new agent/agency with a view to moving this summer, so it might be now or never

United should have the capacity to mold gems into top tier players. The whole "think he should spend one more year in x league before we" is how you end up with silly +100M valuations.

Provided the fee isn't crazy now he would be a good buy and an upgrade on what we have. Come on, it's Weghorst

United need two strikers simple, Martial and Greenwood will go, the latter maybe on loan but they will both go so Kane or osimhen and a young striker like Hojlund make perfect sense.

How do you sell Martial?

Real advantage of this kid is he’s football ambidextrous and is very two footed plus with his pace can play across the front 3 positions or as a pure 9 with Kane behind him as a 10

I wouldn't go for Harry Kane, to be honest. He turns 30 this summer and it'll be RVP all over again. Might be nice to have a season or two out of him, but then we're right back in the same situation. I'll pay £150m for Osimhen before I pay half of that for Kane.

RVP as in winning the league?

Hojlund followed a bunch of our players on Instagram, it's on!

Will echo the sentiments of others in this thread by saying we still need to sign a starter and have him playing Alvarez type role

If people don't prefer to buy 100m 30 years old Kane, 130m Osimhen, 105m Goncalo Ramos, 90m-100m Muani, who else we should buy? This guy would be the cheapest one compare to the other four.

Yes he would but not ready to be main striker

Yeah it would be rubbish if we won the league ala RvP.

You mean the striker who led us to the league title by netting 30 goals?

He means another possibly short term solution. Justifiable if it wins you the league. Not so great if it doesn't.

Kane hasn't had the injury problems which RVP had. The issue won't be the short term solution for Kane because he could play for a few years yet, it will be the price Spurs want.

Yeah bar those ankle niggles from around 4-5 years ago he stays fit most of the time

Kane is a v good player but my stomach turns when thinking of the on going Glazier will or wont sell and then turning to deal with Levy. In my case it would be a step too far unless money isn't a issue by then in which case who cares what age he is just do it.

Højlund is 20 years old, physically developed and improving quite rapidly; at this point of his career (given his background as someone who had to work his way up the footballing ladder), he needs to play as often as possible (even if it is for a non-elite club like Atalanta) to fine-tune his decision-making and real-time marksmanship, and just grow in confidence — like Lewandowski at Lech Poznań (6,800 minutes of first team football from age 20 to 22), Eto'o at Mallorca (6,300 minutes of first team football from age 20 to 22), Suárez at Ajax (7,200 minutes of first team football from age 20 to 22), or even Håland (7,200 minutes of first team football from age 20 to 22). From his perspective, there are very few non-monetary benefits associated with signing for United and stunting his growth by deputizing for a more established and experienced center forward (unless they have the age profile of a Cristiano or Lewandowski, and aren't long for the top levels of club football). If we sign him (after weighing all the risks and rewards), he should be thrown headfirst into the cauldron to prove his mettle, not serve as an indefinite backup for borderline world class, big money starters like Kane (who has a few years of top goalscoring left in him) or Osimhen (who is just entering his prime footballing window).
