Rasmus Højlund | Signed for United

Wiki tells me 10 goals last season. Not bad for a 20 year old. But I’m not seeing why £40m sound like robbery.

In how many minutes? The first advice would be to never use wiki to make that type of judgement.

I'm preparing myself for the budget haaland jokes already

Forget about Höjlund coming to Manchester as a Squad Player. Why would he? He is in a position where he can choose between a lot of pretty attractive options right now. Some of the elite clubs wants to sign him and he could also just stay at Atalanta and develop for another season. He is probably ready to share the minutes with another striker, but he won´t just sit on the bench and wait for Kane to get injured. He is 20 and he needs to play. I am also not really worried about long adjustment time. Höjlund outgrew Sturm Graz within six months and is already very hot property at the end of his first Serie A season. Fast development is his trademark. This is a 50-60 million Euro player who was dismissed by FC Copenhagen eighteen months ago. Buy now. Else he will just end up at Chelsea or Newcastle hammering goals in for them instead of here, where he really wants to go.
Very convincing. I’m all for. Also, he is a monster in my FM save for United.

Is he quick?
There's probably some similarities to a younger Lukaku with their height but also being very fast. Hojlund has shown to be much more of a natural ball player while Lukaku looked more a natural finisher from early days but lacked the technique. Hojlund has the mix of everything. 6'3" or 6'4", fast, has a very good touch, good hold up play and comfortable with the defender on his back, left footed, capable of a variety of finishes and striking with power and accuracy, has shown the moments of that natural CF movement and desire to get the easy goals... Hes young, he's more raw, a lot of ways he can progress, but he has the profile of one of those rare complete strikers who really can do it all. Think younger Dzeko & Lewandowski. Big guys with technique, hold up play but also ball carrying and pace (well Dzeko was never rapid but he wasn't slow when he was younger either).

Keep in mind most of this is from highlights/analytics.. But they are all super encouraging and show what he is capable of. It's a rare blend to have that technique and pace at that size, with the ability to play with your back to goal as well and clean ball striking technique.

Nice. One of the most important things I want in our new CF is that they're quick and mobile. Our team is far too one paced outside of Rashford
Agreed. Højlund seems to have the raw ingredients, so it would be well worth signing him if we can't get hold of one of the very few World Class strikers on the market. The type of player who could explode in a year or two and we'd be left scratching our heads wondering why we didn't take a chance on him.

This is very encouraging. He does seem like quite an exciting player, and as @Remember the geese post alludes to, seems like the sort of player who would sign for someone else and then we're wondering why we didn't get him

Sign this guy for around 40-50m and then sign Diogo Costa for 60 and we’ve got 2 quality players for the same price as Kane would cost…

Looks to be an excellent prospect for a young striker.

If we're on a limited budget and the club sale doesn't go through I wouldn't mind him being our main striker even.

Yep... With the Kane rumors (well not anymore), a part of me wouldn't have been surprised if they replaced Kane with Hojlund and pretty quickly we'd have been left feeling like they got the better deal given the price and age for each. Would much rather get hojlund now, wait for Kane on a free in a year, or just stick with Hojlund if he shows enough reasons to. Still young, still a way to go, but sometimes guys like that explode.

This sounds exactly like the kind of transfer we'll miss out on, watch him do wonders at another big club, and then curse the entire club for not having seen this through. Even if he does cost 40m and flops, there's not too much downside to the deal. Hope we get it done!

40m is close to the fee for Martial in 2015. That puts the price into perspective, today even 50m-55m would be a good fee, not great but good. Osimhen who had roughly the same production in Ligue 1 moved for 75m€.

What's his hold up play like?

I've never watched him play live but feck it we're in muppet season so I consider myself an expert at judging players based on highlights.

He has a good touch and a quick turn (can draw fouls well). Good strength to hold off the defender so it helps when he's turning. Good burst of acceleration so he can turn and run forward quickly after he turns. On the flip side, gets dispossessed a lot and miscontrols a lot (3rd percentile on both, think worse than Fred)

When he's running at defenders he seems to have good ball control - looks like a dribbler more than guys that run at you with sheer pace / power like Lukaku / Haaland. Justified by # of takeons and successful takeons, carries into final 3rd, progressive carries etc. He also gets tackled quite a bit and loses the ball when he's running with it.

So it seems he's option number 2 if we can't get Kane?

What's his hold up play like?

He's good at holding up the play, fast, strong, technical, good passer and not bad in the air, his flaws are that he is young and inconsistent, finishing while decent isn't naturally brilliant and needs to work harder on movement and finding the space but he works hard and wins the ball back high up the pitch often and operates at a quick tempo rather than slow the game down. My only fear with him would be that we put too much responsibility on him but he would work well with wingers like Rashford where the scoring responsibility isn't solely on him as he isn't a typical number 9 in the box poacher.

Of players with a certain amount of minutes, Dzeko, Lauturo Marinez and Oshimen are the only players with a higher npxg than him in Serie A this season. And Oshimen and Giroud the only players with more touches in the penalty area (per 90 min). He also has the highest npxg per shot and only a handful of players have a higher SoT%. Bodes well.

I also prefer to invest in something «tangible». His physical attributes and desire/attitude feels very tangible. Even if he turns out to be not good enough, if feels likely that those two attributes right there will be enough to keep him from being a total flop. At least in combination with the numbers above.

How can £40m be robbery? He doesn’t have a record of scoring goals. We are paying for pure potential.
To be fair, if he boasted a noteworthy record of scoring goals at the age of 19-20 (on top of possessing freaky qualities), he would be a bona fide wunderkind and we would have to pay £100 million for his services (and possibly fight off other suitors who are hunting for center forwards, like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and the madlads at Stamford Bridge). If we exclude his goals for Sturm Graz and the Danish national team, Højlund has 11 goals and 4 assists in 2050 minutes for Atalanta — if he had started every game and taken penalties, he could have realistically ended up with 20 goals or so (which is not too bad for someone who isn't even close to peak production levels). Definitely a gamble, no two ways about that, like you said we are paying for potential, and if he joins United, he would have to adjust to his 4th league in a bit over 2 seasons, but the rewards of him panning out would be immense given his youth and “rawness” (and consequently, room for improvement and growth).

He's got all the qualities to mature into a very very good footballer. I was a big fan of United signing Sesko and Hojlund is a similar ilk. Tall, strong and quick but with very good technique on the ball. The more I think about it the more I think he's my first choice.

The lower quoted fee than Kane/Osimhen would help to possibily improve other areas too.

Might as well sign Weghorst.

What's his hold up play like?

It does look good from the highlights though his first touch can be sometimes erratic. It's also worth noting that Serie A is where Lukaku's hold up play looks world-class.

Sesko to me is a much bigger unknown.. his highlights look much more raw, he doesn't have much evidence of the hold up play/back to goal play which is absolutely huge for me, and seems to rely more on mix of pace/power to get into space in behind and be a threat. Seems more like Darwin, or in terms of the positive potential he could reach, whereas Hojlund I feel like can play with someone on his back. That ability alone is just super important to a team IMO, and distinguishes the pure poacher goalscorers from the more rounded attackers and gives so much more to a team. It can be developed of course, but showing it naturally at a young age is pretty big.

Interesting analysis. Given I think very few of us have seen full matches of this guy it's good to see some reasons why he's drawing a lot of attention. Because clearly it isn't just because he's scored a smattering of goals.

If we get him we will keep Martial as back up. His salary is too high and we won't be able to get rid of him so easily unless we can loan him and pay some of his salary

I get what you're saying, but if we want to compete any time soon then Kane is the more sensible option. His 30+ goals a year will be required to compete.

And this is coming from somebody that doesn't really want to sign Kane from a stylistic standpoint. But if I'm in the managers boots then I'd be desperate for him or Osimhen.

Yeah, I agree with that. I just though Sesko would be a good signing when we were linked.

Is he really any more of a gamble than what we too and spent on guys like Diallo and Pellestri though???? Just looking at them physically and style of play, I know which guy i'd rather gamble my money on

I'm sure he is but it's looking increasingly like signing Kane will be too difficult and Osimhen so expensive it's a window killer. So we'd then have to say to Erik, are you so desperate for Osimhen that you may be able to do very little else in this window?

His idea might change if he is made aware of the situation, budgeting etc and what that means if we go all in for those guys. Which I sincerely hope he is being made aware of, but I am slightly worried he is not.
