Wrong about what? Agents don't know everyone's wages, each players contracts are different and part of a private negotiation, the only persons that know a certain player wage is the player himself, his agent and the club. It's not as easy or straightforward to have a player wage and players tend to not share the information with their teammates. As far as I know CAA doesn't have United players as clients, so there is no immediate reason for a player/agent to have the exact terms of Varane's contract.

And Varane thinking about leaving is a fact that his agent has openly talked about since 2018.

He has never been not passive in the way he plays. He is the same athlete but better in the air and still not really aggressive, he is more in the finesse side of things.

I am not of the opinon that the salaries are so secret just because they aren’t public. We know roughly what the players make. If Varane comes in and get 120 000 more per week than Maguire, he and his agent will know about it.

Not immediately, they will have to work their contacts and they will only have a ballpark figure not the actual terms of the contract. But that's not even the point, the point is that Maguire's demands aren't based on what Varane would earn at United but on what players like Varane earn anywhere, you don't base a serious negotiations on outliers.

But more importantly, has Maguire asked for a raise since Martial got his new contract?

How would I know? It it is quite well known that many teams, like Liverpool, really try to keep salaries down. That could of course be at the expense of losing a player.
One example. DDG is reported to have a salary of 350-375 000 per week. It’s highly unlikely that those figures are totally wrong and his real salary is 180 000.

Liverpool have a bigger wage bill than United. So do City and so do Chelsea.

Under their current owners Liverpool are notoriously cheap and I don't really know what is the link with United trying to bring some of the best players in the world. You don't target these players, just to tell them that you are going to offer them less than the competition because your own top players may want to be paid at market value.
And it's absolutely likely that these figures are off the mark, the press routinely makes things up. Just an example recently two different media outlet claimed that Pogba is demanding 400k and the other said 500k, that's a big difference who is the source of these figures?

I absolutely agree that many figures we hear in media are highly exaggerated and there is a big difference between sources. It my point was that if a new player comes in and get a high salary, players at the same level but with much lower salary will want to negotiate their contracts. I could see that happen maybe with Shaw and Maguire, especially if Varane underperforms. Maybe also Bruno.

That's why I asked if it has happened and as far as I know, it hasn't. The scenario that you just mentioned is made up by the press, like when they imagine swap deals. It sounds realistic but it isn't.

There's nothing comfortable or easy about going to PSG. You win the league, you were supposed to, you don't it's a complete failure. Semi final of a CL is not good enough either (or losing the final in Tuchel's case). There's nothing easy or comfortable about playing for PSG for a player.

And being in France is generally terrible for any french athlete if they underperform even a little bit. Sports talk shows can quickly be nasty.

True but I feel that's a bit more universal, English press, American talk shows about sports, they can all be pretty nasty at times in this clickbait, hot take world we live in.

I know but I meant a french player in France. It's universal but the issue is that due to the fact that most top french players aren't in the league, only a few are actually under the press scrutiny. In other countries there is a sort of safety in numbers.
 
Luckhurst has been all over this story for months so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but it's strange nobody else has reported that we had a bid turned down.

Any reliable sources in France linking Varane with us? He seems to looking for very high net wages (who does not?).

Every report I've seen has said it's the transfer fee thats the issue for us (presumably due to his contract situation), wage and personal terms won't be a problem (so we're willing to pay him what he wants)

Do you think Maguire has the stones to ask for matching wages with one of the most winningest cb’s of his generation? I can’t see it, personally, and I don’t think Maguire gets a matching wage at any other club.

The time for him to ask for parity is after a successful season where we win a major trophy he was instrumental in, certainly not as soon as someone of Varane’s stature arrives at the club.
 
Never mind, @Tom Van Persie, I just remembered the report. Yeah, it's weird that Real Madrid would reject our offer whilst the Spanish media talks about 50 million Euros being the price. I hope that 50 million Euros isn't the price for PSG whilst they have 80 million Pounds for us.

Really? Must be terrible to be winning league titles 90% of the time while earning far beyond what anyone else is earning in that league. I don't really see the repercussions of not winning the CL on Neymar, Mbappe, Verratti etc. Their standing in the game remains unaffected and they keep collecting silverware. Yes, all their achievements have an asterisk against them, and that's precisely what I meant when I replied to that poster who claimed he couldn't understand why Varane would turn down PSG.

No it doesn't look like it. Basically Madrid are scrambling to find a solution, ideally extend him but he refuses. Clubs have contacted them about Varane availability, PSG and United are mentioned.
 
As much as i want Varane to be the guy playing alongside Maguire next season, if we pay anything more than 50m for him it would be silly. It would give so many other clubs a reason to constantly overcharge United for players.

He's got one year left on his contract and United know Madrid can't afford to lose him for nothing so I don't see us paying crazy money but if PSG are serious and enter the race then it becomes a difficult one and we might have to over pay a little if we're absolutely convinced by him.

We probably did our usual and offered 40 million plus 10 million if we win the champions league, 10 million if he wins the ballon dor and 20 million if he finishes premier league top scorer or some other daft add ons

PSG would certainly make things more difficult and probably cause us to pay a bit more than wanted OR you could walk away from the deal and get the Argentine Romero for probably half of what Varane would cost if PSG gets involved

Needs must, and there aren’t many clubs with a Varane calibre player to overcharge us with. We have to be in a position of strength to call shots on elite players and what we’re charged, and as we’ve seen, clubs will gladly walk away if we don’t meet their valuations.

We’ve got some way to go to be shot callers again.

Not really. I mean, I'd love for us to sign him, and spending 50m would make it even sweeter. But if we were to spend 60-70m on him despite the contract situation, it would just mean we paid top money for an elite player. We hardly ever buy elite players. We get fleeced in the decent-to-good player bracket.

Yes of course, why wouldn’t he? Besides that’s what they have agents for. If Varane would underperform, be injured or for some reason he doesn’t bring more value than Maguire, then I definitely think so. It’s not good to have a large difference in salary between players on the same level. I have followed RM for years and seen Varane play many times. He is often very good but it’s not like he’s Messi of defenders.
