Raphael Varane | Signed for United!

Madrid have never been that great defensively so they kind of are. They conceded in every big game they played inder the Ronaldo / Zidane era

That does not mean anything. Your team can concede goals and your defenders can be amazing and the other way around. Context is everything.

Do Madrid have any say over Ramos and Varane though?

People talking like the PSG owners are in deciding to keep Mbabpe
Exactly. PSG can squat on a player until they run their contract out due to their Qatar oil money, but Real Madrid needs to sell Varane if he doesn't extend his contact.

Yeah. Generally with Madrid the CBs have been isolated, particularly in the Ronaldo era. The team would commit 7 to 8 players in the final third with the CBs having to contain counter attacks on their own.

United have earmarked Varane as their ideal defensive target to complement Harry Maguire and have a long-standing interest in the Frenchman since they attempted to sign Varane from Lens in 2011.

Varane is a boyhood United fan whose hero was Rio Ferdinand and earlier this year he rejected an enticing contract offer from Madrid that included the club captaincy. Varane felt there was still a disparity between his salary offer and what his best-paid teammates earn.

The United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was prepared to sanction a £100million move for Varane following the 2018 World Cup but the France international's value was well in excess of that figure at the time.

Varane is under contract until 2022, they are not losing Varane this summer if they don't want to.
I know. Not wanting to lose two centre backs in the same summer makes sense though. And if they want to keep him, even if it’s only for one year, it makes sense to try and get him to sign a new contract so they don’t lose him for nothing.

Varane for 80m? They are bluffing, no one would pay that sort of crazy money in this Covid times, he's got 12 months on his current deal might as well wait and sign him up in January 2022 for free.

if it’s our first offer, it’s fair enough to think they can negotiate. Hopefully we stand firm because it’s a good offer.

Please please make this happen. I truly believe if he arrives along with Sancho and a CDM we can have a proper go at the league next season. The muppet inside me says theres a chance but players in their prime rarely leave Madrid. Will be interesting to see what happens nonetheless.

Pretty sure they will deal for 60m, but the problem is that he's more likely to sign a new contract or go to psg than come here.

We already know that they made contract offers to Varane, it has been the case for more than a year. That's why the contract side of the tweet makes no sense, the chronology is wrong, not only because Varane already received offers but also because they already picked Varane as the long term options not Ramos. The question for Madrid is whether they want to sell Varane instead of potentially losing him for free next summer because at this point they aren't the ones in control. Also if reports are correct Varane didn't intend to leave this summer anyway.

Oh the tweet is a load of balls really. I was just pointing out that it makes perfect sense that if a club loses one centre back that it would make them more eager to ensure they don’t lose another.

The 80m is just ridiculous if true. What's even funnier is that they rejected 50m(if true) when alot of us said we shouldn't go past 45m

What we paid for Maguire. They legitimately believe they can get us to cough it up. Overpay for one player - overpay for all. People moan about a United tax. It's self-inflicted.
Overpay for one player? We’ve been overpaying for pretty much every transfer for years now.

In reality he’s whatever price Real say he is.

If we got Varane on a 5 year contract for £80m, what does it matter whether he’s got 1, 3 or 5 years left on his contract with them? That’s the price or he stays at Real for another year.

Looking at it in a vacuum would we be better off sticking with what we have and trying to get him for free a year later or is there any centrebacks anywhere near we he could bring to us for a more reasonable fee? I don’t see any.

Just as we're about to overpay for Sancho

Just as we're about to overpay for Sancho

How? We didn't sign him for £108m last summer because it was too much, this summer it could be £80m? How is that over paying for one of the best talents?

So what’s people’s thinking on Varane or Sancho?

I think I’d personally prefer Varane tbh.

But your defence has never been a great defence yet youd think Varane and Ramos were a brick wall. Great defences dont conceded in every big game that spans multiple seasons. Thats the attack getting you over the line.

Id argue the other way. Hes worth whatever the buying club is willing to pay or hes worth 0 to them this time next year.

This sounds about right. Until we know hes actually intent on leaving i doubt we'll make contact.

They don’t want to lose two centre backs?
Yeah, but with the contract situations are what they are. They can not want all they want, but by reports they've tried get Varane to renew for a while, so because now Ramos is leaving, that doesn't change Varanes mind.

money has a way of changing minds.

Pay whatever it takes, no more of this half arsed bullshit where we back off and go down a tier of player just because it's cheaper. If we want to catch up to City then we need to pay big for this type of player.
