The threat to wait a year to sign Varane (or a pre-contract in January, no real difference) isn't credible. On the other hand, Real obviously wants the money and doesn't want him to leave for free.
So Real need to sell him and United really want to buy him. Leverage is basically equal and the two clubs will posture and piss around for a few weeks then cut a deal sometime in August.

What do people mean when they say this? He won't be able to play for us until 22/23 season if we miss out this summer, what use is it to us getting a pre-contract done in January if he can't play?
