Never ceases to amaze me on here. Someone on the Kane thread the other day making out he was past it and "nearly 30". Madness.
Player in his prime, ready made to slot in and improve us significantly.
I always wondered if in these type of situations are they actually negotiating in the background with Woodward to make it look legit or are they just using journalists/papers to throw our name out there?

Yeah most people are just stupid.
Lewandowski has said a few weeks ago "His body was never in a better shape".
It is down to every player to have still a good body with 30-34.
Of course if you had 2-3 long-term injuries in your career then it is a different situation.
A player can genuinely be interested in joining us and still be potentially trying to sign a new deal if the current club match his demands. It’s not an absolute either way.

I’m on board with this. Huge talent, great technical and physical attributes and a wealth of experience. Perfect foil for Maguire as well. His form dipped but I’m sure a new challenge will invigorate him.
I'm pretty amazed there are people scoffing at 60m for an elite centre back in his prime. We're being linked with unproven players and the figures bandied about always reflect the United tax. Koundé for 50-60-70m....

Totally agree. 60 mill for Varane is the best possible CB business we could do in the summer.
What it does do though is limit our spending elsewhere, not sure how much money Ed and the elder Vampires are willing to spend this summer, a lot I hope.
No matter the calibre of the player I can't see anyone paying £60m in Covid economy for a player with only 1yr left who is reportedly refusing to sign a new one.
It's why people are talking about Pogba being in the £40-50m bracket.
60 mill is what it will cost to get Kounde or Pau Torres. Varane at that price is a steal.
Such an opportunity doesn't arrive very often. Would enable Ole tactical flexibility - higher line, pressing higher up, not as reliant on the McFred combo, so possibly more creativity from midfield. Could really fix a lot of things in one move.
Yeah, I don't see us selling Pogba for 40-50m this summer. At all. If he desperately wants to go, I could only see us sticking to a high price or using him in a swap for a quality player. I think the current economic situation doesn't really affect the elite players' prices too much.

What makes you say this? He has one year left on his contract, Madrid have been trying to sign him to a new deal for ages and still not signed and we all know he's been a wet dream of Woodward's for years. Madrid can't afford to lose him on a free.

in ordinary times, you might be right but we won't have a huge pot of many to spend and sorting out the midfield/wingers (after about 10 years of not doing so) is more important plus we need a world-class goal scorer. and, by the way, as much as you might disagree, opinions can't be awful.
And if winning everything is what you go by, you must mean winning nothing makes you bad... well, I can think of lots of very good CBs to whom that applies
Pogba is a world cup winner but doesn't dominate in lots of games - that trophy has absolutely no bearing on the premier League. Steve Bruce was never even picked for England but was a fantastic CB. I keep hearing the argument about what players have won making them brilliant - by that measure, people who haven't won those trophies are poor, which i obviously not true.
I am worried that Varane will be caught out by the pace of the PL, which is well above that of the La Liga. He's obviously a very good player but using £60m of a transfer kitty that won't be huge, when we need to strengthen midfield/wingers and buy a top-class goal scorer worries me.
As for young players not being ready - well, if SAF had followed that line we'd never have seen Gary Neville, Scholesy, Becks etc

There's been a couple. Robben, di Maria and Ôzil come to mind. Real Madrid are stubborn about their wage scale and Varane earns very little considering his experience and silverware. This might be the chance for him to finally earn the big pay cheque. I don't think it's impossible for us to acquire him.
Madrid's problem is that they're also negotiating with Ramos for a contract, so they're probably trying to work out how much they can spend on defender salaries. Not everyone has an oil well in Abu Dhabi to tap out an extra billion.
What makes you doubt him? His height of 1,91m/6,3ft? His outstanding physical stature? His recovery speed? I mean, we have Londelöf starting for us, Stones starts for City who are miles ahead of the rest of their competition in the table...
Varane in terms of his athleticism and physicality is basically Rio’s clone (and arguably an upgrade as he’s even taller without it affecting his speed and agility). He’s not quite as good as Rio was overall, but I’m not sure how physicality is going to be an issue.

Of all the things to doubt about Varane and this transfer, him being physical enough for the PL isn't one of them.
people said ruben dias and thiago silva were going to buckle to the epl, they are doing just fine.

No but it effects the price of the player who is a proven winner, has the mentality to not crumble under pressure, which we need. There's no way we'd get Varane for £30m, no way. Would we sell Pogba for £30m? No chance.
How often have you watched him play? He's no slouch that's for sure. We spent £130m on two defenders when we also needed midfielders, wingers and a striker don't forget. The defence has let us down on plenty of occasions this season and title winning teams are made from building from the back.
You're talking about an 18 year old CB who's just started playing for the u23s this season playing in the PL and worried that Varane, an experienced CB, wouldn't handle it. Ethan Laird is the best prospect we have in defence and he's had to go out to MK Dons in League One to gain minutes and experience, Fish I feel would have to do the same.
