Raphaël Varane - Summer 2019

We might actually stand a chance. Real Madrid plan on going on a spree and usually they’ll offload someone for huge money to compensate. They did it with Ozil, Higuain, Di Maria and tried with James before everyone refused to meet their valuation. I don’t doubt he’s angling for a new deal like so many before him, but they could call his bluff and push him out the door.

Keeps woody distracted for the entire transfer window leaving Madrid a free run on other top quality players that are actually available (then we sign Fellaini)

How good is he? I feel like I've watched Varane for years without really noticing him. I'm not sure what that says about me or him. Madrid are always ropey defensively in the league. In the CL they're a jammy but undoubtedly hugely successful team. At the WC France were superb defensively.

Despite having followed teams hes played, I don't find myself as certain of him as I've been about, Godin in the past for example who without a question, at least in his prime, would step in and boss it for is.

Varane was a great talent. How great a CB is he? Would you bank on him being one of the very best in the PL or would he have inconsistencies?

100m and Varane for Pogba, and we've done good imo. Most likely it's bullshit and Varane only needs a new contract.

Problem with potentially signing Varane, is that Real Madrid would only agree to deal with us if Pogba is included in deal.

He won't leave, he's doing a Ramos for a new contract. We'd be daft to go anywhere near Madrid and this type of deal again anyway. We've done them enough favours over the years. Let him piss off to PSG or Juventus or something.

Too much money for Pogba. You would value Pogba at 200 million euros.
I would not pay it. I would sell Varane and wait a while for Pogba, while rumors go out with other midfielders, to see what Raiola does

I think Pogba would easily go for 200 million euros, in fact I'm not sure that's enough. When you consider Coutinho went to Barcelona for 160, Pogba is by far the better player.

Varane has 3 years to run on his current contract so if he is using this tactic to test Zidane's resolve there is one way to find out, talk to his agents and bid for him! This guy would be a great addition for us or would you pay similar money for Macguire?

I feel exactly the same. Maybe his inconspicuousness is a good thing; he just goes about his business quietly and efficiently, and can do the job without being a hard-tackling shouty “leader”.

The excellence of France’s defence at the WC certainly gives the lie to the notion that he’s only any good alongside Captain Leader Legend Ramos.

Are we really gonna be so naive? Remember Morata deal? They wanted either to skin us alive or to get DDG as part of the deal, kept raising the price when we refused them.
Those are rumours. Lukaku said he had agreed to join us long before the summer.
If he's decided to leave, Real will find the best deal from wherever they can get it. We don't even know if Pogba wants to leave.

Surely this is just a move for him to get a bigger contract and stay at Madrid?! I got sucked into the Ramos chat when that was happening and haven't recovered.

And he was one of the main reasons, Umtiti and Pavard were shaky.

Well, the example of Coutinho is very particular.Bartomeu was very pressured after the disaster of Neymar + Madrid winning Champions.
If we put his price as the official currency, any top midfielder goes to 200.
In the same way Van Dijk was sold for 85. Basing on that and with the experience, age and Varane guarantee of success, Madrid could ask 130 for example

Get him. It's Madrid that needs funds this year and this is it.
Is he pals with Pogba? Would keep him happy here if that's the case.
always thought Varane was the reason why Ramos is so overrated. If Varane scored goals he would be what Ramos is now.
Mh, as someone who watches real madrid a lot, nooooope. If anything, i think Varane has to be the most overrated defender in the world, thanks to the teams he played in and what they won. He's good, not saying otherwise, but i'd bite your hand off for a €100m for him. Van Dijk he is not, not even close. For now at least

As far as I know he doesn't have any knee problems, he had big cut on the knee but it was a hit, he had a back problem a few years ago that was allegedly causing other issues particularly muscular but it hasn't been a problem in the last 18 months. Defensively he is excellent, good positioning, anticipation and probably the best athlete among top defenders but what separates him from others is that he is very good on the ball with both feet, last week he just decided to cross with his left foot and it was probably the best cross of the game.
Wait, what? Do you guys get a different player for the national team???:confused::confused:

Well mate it's all rumours, only difference is that some come from more credible sources than the others.

I have him between 6th and 10th among CBs with Bonucci, Ramos, Chiellini, Van Dijk and Piqué(2018-2019) above him. Do you think that it's overrating him?

I don't think so, the problem with Madrid isn't individual and that's why I tend to defend Ramos too. You have one of the worst defensive structure among top teams, your midfielders and fullbacks defend and cover their areas when it pleases them which puts the CBs in terrible situations on a regular basis. But both Ramos and Varane are pretty good when they are not surrounded by what I think are idiots.

No, i think that's fair. Bonucci is a far worse defender btw, but as a player might be on the same level.

I would say Van Dijk, Koulibaly, Chiellini and Godin are still the best defenders in the world, then you have Ramos and Pique(who are as good as anyone on their day but lack the consistency of those guys above), then below that you have Varane, Skriniar, Alderweireld, etc...

Put Varane next to a Godin or Chiellini(leaders with great awereness and communication) and he'll turn into a one man wall.

Put him next to Nacho, and know despair

How Bonucci still gets mentioned in lists like these is beyond me

He isn’t half the defender Chiellini is. Watching Bonucci in Milan last season without Chiellini was painful.

Definitely, but still, positioning and especially anticipation have constantly been an issue with Varane for us. And he's not bad with the ball at his feet no, but still, i wouldn't call him good either. Ramos and Marcelo are scary because they tend to get overconfident. Varane and Casemiro are scary because they can get very clumsy, especially under pressure.

Varane imho is made for playing in a low block. In a high line he needs to be partnered with a defensive leader who can cover for his flaws and help him keep his composure when things start going south

There are about 16 top CBs in the world if you think about it. If this report is to be believed then Varane is one of only 5 that could be available this summer (along with Koulibaly, Skriniar, Alderweireld and De Ligt).

If we aren’t going to be taken for a merry ride like Graham Hunter was by Ramos and his brother then we need to do everything to get him in order to not be stuck with the Manolas’ and Maguires of this world. £85m is really not that much for someone of his quality and contract situation. It’s 2019.

I agree with your last point, he is better when he defends going forward and can be more aggressive, a low block allows that. For a high defensive line you want a player like Umtiti who can quickly switch between containment and aggression.

People always say things like this but has it ever actually happened that way?

Well think about it. Madrid are clearly targeting Pogba and Varane wants out, so it's only logical to assume that if we go after Varane they'll try to get Pogba in return.

I assume it's because of stuff like that we've never seen that many transfers from Real Madrid to Manchester United, bar Di Maria whom them wanted to get rid really bad and still they got a great money for him.

Players tend not to want to leave Real so this does feel like Ronaldo/Ramos all over again but if we can do it then we should

Fecking ludicrous we chose Phil fecking Jones over him in the first place

Interesting. Always appears to have a mistake or two in him, you'd say?

Also, it's odd that a defender who is known to be quick would be more suitable to a low block.

Most gifted CB in the world. He has everything.

We didn't chose Jones over him, we wanted both.
