The four GOATs.

In your opinion who's first to fourth?

For me

1. Messi
2. C.Ronaldo
3. Pele
4. Maradona

I'm sorry but Ronaldo doesn't even belong to the group where are other 3.

Club career:

1) Messi & Pelé
3) Maradonna / Ronaldo

International career:
1) Maradonna & Pelé
-)
3) Messi
4) Ronaldo

Is it a requirement to have seen them all play and if not how do we form an opinion?

1. Maradona / Messi / Pele (All have claim to the top spot IMO)

There's plenty of other GOATs missing tough. Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Di Stefano, Muller, Zidane, Ronaldo come to mind over who could compete for number 2/3 spot.

Ronaldo doesn't belong in this conversation.

You can make arguments for Pele, Messi and Maradona to be the 'GOAT'

Any argument for Ronaldo falls flat.

That said

1. Messi
2. Pele
3. Maradona
4. Ronaldo

Rank players you have see along with those you haven't

From those I have
1. Messi

2. Ronaldo (7)

3. A fair few players (Zidane, Iniesta, Xavi, Ronaldhinio etc)

I won't bother then :wenger:
Thats why I stick to players who I've seen. Can't bother getting into these ridiculous all time debates. How on earth am I supposed to compare Pele from the 60s to Messi from these past 15 years.

I know....maybe the OP is a time traveller

It’s subjective, but here’s mine:

1. Messi
2. Pele
3. Ronaldo
4. Maradona

The thing with Maradona is, although he is probably most talented player I’ve ever seen, and has reached the kind of peak on the biggest stage that no one else has ever reached. His overall career/stats are also far worst than the other 3. He is also self destructive when approaching his early 30s, with the biggest decline ever seen from any other GOAT, which is another big factor when compared with the other 3.

Yeah he isn't in the same tier. The argument is where he fits from 4-6. But none of those in the second tier should be grouped with the 3 consensus goats. There's quite a big drop in quality.

Messi
Pele
Maradona

Messi and Pele are close.

Cristiano is in another tier below them.

Messi

Didn't watch Pele, only saw Maradona in 94.
I don't rate players based on Youtube highlights or stats. Those 2 above might be better than him but I don't know that.
I do know that Ronaldo is not even close to being in a conversation with Messi.

1. Ronaldo
-
2. Maradona
3. Pele
4. Messi

obviously
not

1. Messi
2. Pele
3. Maradona
4. Ronaldo

I wager to guess, judging by this thread so far, that this is the most popular order too.

1. Maradona
2. Pele
3. Messi

I give no credence to longevity

Peak talent is the only thing that should be considered when looking for the greatest footballer.

Could even argue Ronaldinho (and not Messi) should be up there with Maradona and Pele on a pure talent perspective

Maradona single handedly dragged Napoli(who were almost relegation fodder), to the Serie A title, back when Serie A had elite talent and teams.

Could peak Messi/Ronaldo have dragged Wolves to a PL? No way to know, but I doubt it.

Also Maradona's WC 86 performance remains the best performance ever on the biggest stage. Probably the highest peak any footballer has ever shown, that too coming back from an injury, with shite pitches, where defenders tried to break your leg at every opportunity.

So for me : Maradona > Messi > Pele > Ronaldo

1. Messi
2. Ronaldo.

There is not much between them. 20 vs 19.9.

Never watched Pele or Maradona.
