Ralf Rangnick | ex-interim manager | does anyone rate him?

@harms isn't the "inventor" of gegenpress the national manager of Hungary in the 50s? Which was then used in Totaalvoetbal later in the late 60s-70s?
Rangnick developed his style after playing against and then studying Dynamo Kyiv managed by Lobanovskyi. Not sure about Hungary but wouldn’t surprise me, people are too quick to pin these tactics on specific people.

It looks like he is doing very well with Monchengladbach? Only see results not the games, so don't know how he has influenced the performances.
Gladbach are a top 6 club in Germany but there's only so much you can do with them. But Hutter is someone that has done well at numerous clubs playing a very attacking brand of football. He's also defeated Bayern in the Cup this season 5-0.

My god thats one sexy football brain. This guy sounds like he's going to separate the men from the boys extremely quickly in our squad.

I'm expecting crazy scorelines this season. Doesnt sound like a cautious coach that we have been so used to since Fergie retired.

I know that Kyiv played like that too but it's younger. For some reason I seem to remember Hungary being mentioned as the starting point for that approach.

With his emphasis on energy, I'm really interested to see if he promotes any academy players into first team. Imagine if someone like a Hannibal starts getting regular minutes

Any predictions?

Saw somewhere that Lokomotiv actually didnt hire RR directly but they have contract with his agency, 4,5 mil. per year. Guess agency is there as advisory body to steer club/s in certain direction when it comes to structure building.

Then it makes sense for him to push for his services and agency after 6 month period and demand those 2 years to be locked, its will increase agency reputation and secure income for next 2 years.

I think this would be a great appointment and just what we need to find out what our identity is on the pitch, we are not playing as a team we are playing like individuals or even like the local team in the park. Rangnick will sort out the men from the boys and get our identity back as a team, he has six months to sort us out and get pressing and then he is upstairs for two years, and who knows he might even become Director of Football, now that would be good he could sort out getting (ideally) Ten Hag on board.

If he can end the season well with us and go on to successfully build a new project at the club which results in a league or CL he’ll be an absolute legend at the club.

I think he will have to dig into academy with our current midfield options.

"Little bit of pressing is like little bit of pregnant, you're either pregnant or not." Ralf Ragnick

I loved this quote from the video, Ralf wont tolerate any half assed effort or 'bluffers' as Keano calls it.

That Hungary team mainly invented the false 9. It helped them mostly in attack, as it totally confused defenses around the world and Sepp Herberger got massive praise in Germany to figure out how to stop Hidegkuti in the WC final 1954.

Hidegkuti's movement also helped them in defense, but I don't think you can really call that gegenpress in the modern sense. But I guess one is not wrong to see it as a step in that direction.

I've been an advocate of this for a long time now. I'm sorry but McTominay is severely lacking in footballing IQ - I think he'll be a major casualty of this appointment but could be wrong.

People have different opinion about a person. I don't care much. Important is we have somebody with better footballing brain than Ole for rest of the season. I have personally written off this season. Too much to fix in too short time. But good thing is there is a possibility of getting a good manager in summer when Rangnick moves to consulting role (whatever that means).

Interesting. Thanks for the info

It’s funny I listened to one of those Duncan Castles podcast and he spent the first 2-3 minutes patting him self on the back talking about how he broke the Ole news, and how back in Sept he was the only journo who said the Glazers were not happy with the football….. podcast was posted a few hours before Rangnick was announced and not once did he mention Rangnick, only thing he mentioned was that United preferred it to be Carrick to the end of the season.

If we can get 3 points from the Chelsea and Arsenal games then our run until February after that looks like a very good opportunity to put a silly run together and get back in the mix.

This guy is someone who's better at delivering his knowledge to the coaches rather than the players. But that is obviously why he's being kept for 2 years in a consultant position. I think the ambition here is to educate the coaching staff and let them deal with the players.

I'm 100% onboard with the excitement of something new, but I'd advice caution for anyone expecting a magician in the dugout, he's not that. He's more of a building block that more talented managers have learned from (Klopp, Tuchel)

Did Rangnick piss in this guy’s coffee or something?
Looks like yes.

“Still, the former president of Lokomotiv, Nikolai Naumov, is a man of some surprisingly pure degree of stupidity. He sees the problem of the Loko project with Rangnik in that the project does not want to be unprofitable. And the man made a career Naumov. We respect, they call him for an opinion. But you can’t trust him with a greenhouse with cucumbers. He will approach the greenhouse, think for half a minute, turn around and say condemningly: scoundrels, you will simply eat these cucumbers. Gobble it up, and to hell with all the work!

I can't get the picture out of my mind, of Woodward and the Glazers sitting around a table in a brainstorming session and coming up with the idea that they want a Klopp clone.

Then when they Googled Klopp and then clicked on 'gengenpress', they discovered that Rangnick is the 'Godfather of gengenpress', so decided he was the man for the job.

A lot of us are expecting one of Poch or Ten Hag to be a given in the summer, but what happens if Ragnick recommends we bring in a left field, relatively unknown bundesliga manager who he feels best fits the philosophy of style he wants United to progress with - do you think we'd entertain it? This is assuming that this would be on the back of a successful interim spell, since if it ends up being a disastrous 6 months the club will obviously tell him to zip it.

As @Adnan was saying Adi Hutter becomes a bigger possibility.

Anyways what he said about Rangnick is not wrong. The guy is an egomaniac who desperately wants the chance at a truly massive club to finalize the legendary image for himself. He is not coming to United because he loves United, he is coming because he wants to go down in history as the one guy who gave them direction after SAF.

That's nothing to worry about for United, as he needs to leave United on an upward trajectory in 2.5 years to succeed with this legend building, but speaking about his motivation and character I think he isn't described that bad here.

Would I be right in thinking he is pretty much the opposite of Van Gaal? I wonder how the players who were here under Van Gaal will find his style?

In short united weren't organized until now. Everyday Rangnick is here Ole will be swallowing the comparison.

That's quite telling that the first thing Klopp talks about is how organised we will be. Says a lot about our set up before Ralf came in

Players who will love this - Sancho, Donny and Rashford

Players who won't - Maguire, Martial and Ronny
Can we stop with this? Cristiano Ronaldo, the most disciplined

In one of the many YT videos Ragnick talks about building a squad that's not only well-suited to the style of play but also young and able to be developed for the sake of moving them on in a few years time for 2-3x their value.

He's getting tons and tons of credit all around for his "philosophy". This tweet, while it may seem a bit like sour grapes, also highlights the other aspect about Ragnick that probably endeared him to the likes of Woodchuck , which is he is a ruthless and astute businessman. For better or worse, United need the best of both so really have to say Ragnick is the perfect fit moving from interim to consultancy.

I like him already. Finally a personality to compete with the Klops and Pep’s etc and our pressers will be great to watch.

Pretty much you are right. The time around 2010 in the Bundesliga was the battle between the polar opposites Bayern/van Gaal and Dortmund/Klopp (who is close in style to Rangnick, while only losely related. Saw some people here giving Rangnick credit for Klopp's career, but thats bollocks)

Don’t be shocked to see some potential unknown names if this is the case, at least unknown relative to Pochettino and Ten Hag
