I loved his response when he was asked about Elanga.

” Elanga shows what is possible in football if you have the right mentality and right approach to go into the game which he always shows in every training session as well.”

Shots fired on lot of United player to take inspiration from a youngster
love all of this

He's doing well and got a good result against a tough European team away from home.

It's going to take a while to get these players in optimal physical condition for the type of heavy metal football Rangknick wants us to play for 90 minutes. Look how long it took Klopp and consider how many players he had to get rid of for instance. These players of ours bitched about double training sessions
It looked all quite static to me, so I looked up the stats how much distance was covered... both teams were lazyin that regard.
Atletico: 106.7 km
United: 101.9 km

For comparison when Liverpool played there in the group they covered 107.1 km, Atletico 110.3 km in that game.

And those numbers are still low compared to other games/teams, for example on the weekend Bayern covered 115.5 km against Greuther Fürth (115.0 km) - that's more than one full player more in that regard.

A lot of people have focussed on him using Elanga as an example but his full answer was even better, he talked about how Elanga is enjoying the game and even though the pressure is high but it’s still a ball game and he wishes that his players would enjoy the game more .

Took over a side that had played 20 games this season and lost fecking 7 of them. He’s now managed 16 and lost 1.

Context numpties.

that’s all good and it is an improvement indeed although we had a relatively easy run of games (nothing is easy for us anymore, but relatively easy). But performances are still very shaky and we have now started a series of tough matches. This is the real test now.

Im Rangnicks biggest fan but he fkd up last night. Playing Fred as a DM and two 8's against top opposition is a mistake that's been proven a million times before. And Lindelof at RB was just stupid. I think the goal at 2 mins fkd the game plan and he couldn't have foreseen how many of our top players would just play so sht but still he takes a large part of the blame. Still he made the right subs and we got a decent result. Lets learn from this and go again.

Some of the insults he has got in this thread tonight are an absolute disgrace. Some proper brats in here.

totally agree, I honestly despise with some of our “fans” these days, he’s done an excellent job in the conditions put upon him.

I agree with Lindelof being played out of position but how did he get it wrong in midfield? We literally have no midfield alternatives. He’s just playing the hand he’s been dealt

My current take on Ralf is:
  • Love it that he says it like it is. He's honest about the team performance and doesn't blindly protect the team when we are poor
  • He's very transparent in press conferences and usually addresses any rumors and issues. He's almost too open at times giving away information that should perhaps be discussed behind closed doors
  • It doesn't quite fully show yet but I think tactically he's top notch, something that has been widely discussed when he was appointed
  • I suspect the struggle is getting the players to implement it. From hearing him speak (limited to interviews/press conferences), I don't get a sense that he has a great ability to fire up/motivate players due to his overall character/demeanor. Other managers like Klopp / Guardiola / Mourinho / Tuchel appear strong dressing room characters who may be able to get more out of their players. Pure speculation on my part obviously
  • Given time Ragnick will get there but he just doesn't have the time. Being an interim means the players may be looking more towards the next manager as well

All in all I'm reasonably happy with him. Shame we don't get to see what he can do with a summer and a full season.
I'm in the camp of wanting Ten Haag to take over for next year but won't be massively disappointed if Ralf ends up being manager for another

I think last night was a lesson of how far we have got to go in our possession play.

Yeah there was the obvious problems that Fred is in no way a defensive midfielder and Lindelof isn’t a RB.

But what most concerns me is how bad we still are with the ball none of our front 6 move, we can’t string togther 2 passes in midfield, Sancho was none exsistent and Ronaldo may as well of been a statue.

Thiskind of play has been an issue since Morinho was here, I was hoping Rangnick would have at least started to train some kind of structured passing and attacking movement, but maybe it’s too hard mid season or the players just won’t do it.

just remember how totally pathetic we were in losing 4-1 to Watford!

Rangnick should train our players on how to beat the high press. Last night, Athletico ruined our game simply by pressing relentlessly.

He must ensure this is not repeated in the return league.

He probably is, but you can't train an entire team to drastically change the way they play in a short space of time, especially not with some of the thick players we have. Not to mention fitness levels take time to improve. You only have to look at Liverpool when Klopp took over to see that even the best coaches need time to get their ideas implemented and working to a high level. It'll come eventually, if we stick with it and don't go hiring a radically different manager next.

People expect miracles from him, it seems like a lot of people can't comprehend how difficult it would be to completely change the mentality and work ethic of players being paid huge amounts of money, who already consider themselves top tier players, and most importantly who had a manager who seemingly gave them free reign to some extent before Rangnick. People talk about how Potter or someone else would have them playing much better, I think this is utter nonsense, Potter has never had to manage someone who already considers themselves at the top of the food chain, himself and people like Hassenhuttl work with hungry, middle of the pack players that are rarely on over 60k, and are trying to get to places like Utd.

On top of that, we made no signings for him in Jan, so he's trying to reinvent our team solely with the existing players. It's telling that a youth product that isn't yet on hoards of cash or jaded is quickly becoming his go to player, if we had more of those types ready, I'm sure they would be starting, as they are far easier to work with. All in all I think he's doing a great job given what is in front of him. Hopefully he gets a solid idea of who needs to go and who needs to stay, and we sign a long term manager in the summer that will benefit from everything he has gone through.

He has done OK for me, we need a shake up on the playing staff, some of our players don't have enough hunger for me, others don't want to listen it appears and some aren't good enough, until that changes any manager will struggle

Love his honesty. Especially about players being subdued - we can all see it. We need this brutal honesty if we are to move forward.
In an advisory role, probably. More than honesty, we need a high quality manager as.. manager.

Just because a manager is publicly honest does not mean others who cover for players in public are not honest in the dressing room.

Not expecting miracles but let’s call out mental decisions. Lindelof offered nothing either going forward or defending. He is not a right back and our whole back line looked at Ole levels of disorganisation because the centre halves had no outlet and the wingers stayed so high leaving a huge gapS between out fuking static back four...our scared and hiding midfield and our isolated and useless forwards. No balance. Weird. Weird approach. Athletico were crap. Any decent side walks out of the 2 or 3 goals to the good...any decent side.

I like Ralf but I didn’t agree with that line up, Lindelof in that role, with how Pogba and Fernandes were positioned, with how long Rashford stayed on the pitch, with how long Fred stayed as a 6 when he was clearly causing panic in there from the get go.

Just odd.

Spot on. We have gone from getting pumped 4/5 nil by all and sundry and looking like a relegation team to holding a decent team to a draw away in the knockouts of the CL, giving ourselves a good chance to take them in the second leg. Anyone who cant see the improvement is a fool.

Question not directed at me but had to be Matic. Fred is not a number 6. I think he’s very effective in that number 8 role - best ball winner higher up the pitch.

Exactly that - Matic. If Matic is not available we have to try a 3-5-2. Heck play Jones in midfield. Bring back Garner. Anything. Its all fkd I agree but we have spent what 6 years plus trying to play Pogba in a double pivot or with two 8's and it doesnt work 99 percent of the time. We get overrun in midfield by bottom teams week in week out what makes anyone think we can all of sudden play well against top opposition in the Champions league. And Im not saying Matic for Fred. Im saying Matic + Fred. Or any two of Matic, Fred, McTominay must play against top sides.

People seem to be loving his honesty but really though if Elanga didn't score he'd get absolutely destroyed here and his honesty seen as a curse.

Being honest is one thing but I dont care about his honesty if he isnt resolving this.

I mean this is the same crap we did under Ole, 3 months later there is no change in the style of play. The same mistakes are being made.

There’s absolutely no way Matic could have started last night. Genuinely, he would have been dead on his feet by half time. We may as well bring Scholes back again.

Fred as a lone DM is obviously absolutely crap but the fact is we don’t have any better options. What the manager is supposed to do I have no idea.

Exactly.

It was widely reported that Rangnick wanted a midfielder in the winter window. Our board, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to listen to him. Which doesn't give you much hope for how much he'll be listened to during his two year consultancy does it?

The options at #6 last night were Fred, Grandpa Matic and Phil Jones winding it back to the Bernabeau a decade ago. That's not on Ralf. That's on the club.

All things considered, Rangnick is pretty much the only thing about United I have confidence in. Even if you question his starting line up, you can see the logic of what he wanted to do. Nobody would have thought we'd wet the bed like we did. Thankfully he was able to make the changes to rescue the match. Still, his hands are tied by the ingridients he has to work with.

I want Ragnick to stay and become full time. I love his man management. The truth is most of the squad is straight knackered. Lets see what he can do with youngsters if he can bring some in from Europe. We gave Ole 3 Years of our man utd life...so im willing to give him Two.

This squad was built basically by Woodward and so called fine tuned by Ole, the fact that there is no dominant DM and for some reason Ole believed Matic had the legs to fill that role.

Fred is a ballwinner who should play high up to feed the forwards and play off them , sure he may be basically a squad player , but with the signing mantra of Woody , he has ended up trying to play a role that isn’t his forte. Such a poor effort at building a functional team, amazing that we stay in games long enough to win a few and maintain pressure around the bottom of the top 4. The summer build of players, likely new manager and some astute release of players is massive, let’s hope it happens.

Me neither. But we have to do something. Whats the point of Fred as a sole DM when we know its not going to work. We could have killed Matic you're right but maybe its worth the risk. Maybe 3-5-2? Who knows. Its Ralphs conundrum but if he goes into any of the Liverpool, City, Atleti games with a sole DM we are screwed especially of its Fred. Every so slightly better odds if its McTominay and better odds yet if somehow Matic is fit enough. Matic and Pogba played some good games as a pivot. But statistically we do better with two of them.

Some of the takes in here are barmy. We know how average we’ve been recently and we’re still on the tie despite a poor first half. As a team there were a lot of individual errors yesterday but we rallied and that’s what matters in a two legger.

We should have gone 3-5-2 yesterday I think
that would have given us a bit more control
We have Man City and Liverpool coming up and I think that's the formation we need to play against them
We may have to drop Ronaldo for this formation to work
DeGea
Lindelof Varane Macguire
Shaw Fred Scott Pogba AWB
Bruno Sancho

this is the team i would play against the top teams

Why I don't understand the moaning.

Was brutal first half but a lot of it was down to so many of our big players not turning up.

Lost count of how many times Pogba, Bruno, Ronaldo, rashford, Fred lost the ball.....felt like every time someone was close to them they panic. Clearly their pressing worked well but we didn't handle it well at all.

He got the tactics wrong and then they scored early, but he can't compensate for more than half the team not showing up to play.

He seen the issues and made the changes, and in 2nd half we were much better, and could have maybe got a winner.

We have massive chance to go into next round. Night and day where we were at months ago.

His in-game management is very good, at halftime I felt confident he could make the adjustments and substitutions to change the game. I also agree with his view that United could have won that game if there was an extra ten minutes. The Lindelof decision was strange but he did play well against Leeds.

Pretty much. I said it last night, our ridiculous (lack of) recruitment last summer was exposed badly against Atletico. Rangnick’s hands were tied.
