I hate it. There you have it. I fecking hate every aspect of it. I hate the boring rhythms, I hate the instruments they use, I hate the sense of self indulgence involved in the music, I hate how there are often too many voices involved in a song, I hate how the vocal acrobats are over-done (yeah we know you can fecking sing you GIMP!) I hate how every song seems to have the same feel to it and most of all..........I hate the lyrics.

How How HOW can people write such absolute unadulterated bollox about other human beings. It's lies ! 99% of R&B lyrics are so literal. It makes me want to puke. It's filled to the brim with more cheese than you'd expect to find on rimaldo and iSparky's knobs combined.

Sorry in advance to anyone on here who is an R&B fanatic. I just do not get what you see in it.

I'm talking about R&B over the past 20 years. I don't know too much about 70's & 80's R&B. It may well have been better.

Agreed, I often wonder who the feck buys it.....

I've come to the conclusion its slightly sadistic nurses in departments of hospitals that deal with severe brain injuries and they play it endlessly to people in comas.... the fecking bitches!

what's rnb? stuff like usher?

what's hip hop? somebody give me an example

how is hip hop different from rap?

My sentiments exactly. Well in Sir!

R&B is usually shit and practically meaningless as a term. Rhythm 'n' blues, see say, Bobby Bland was very good indeed.

As Pogue said, a bit harsh to dismiss the whole genre, despite me not being a massive fan of it either. Is a bit snobbish really.

Not a fan of Michael Jackson kinks?

R&B like any other genre of music has its highlights and lowlights and occasional guilty pleasures

R&B use to be listenable back in the day, when it wasn't this mainstreamed pop bullshit.

Artists like D'angelo are a reminder of what we have lost in this day and age.

Still, if you want a taste of the classics, look up K-Murdock....What he is doing should be recognized as a movement.

Old R&B/Soul:

Hip-Hop:

Rap and shit new r&b is what you hear on the radio or base.

Old is stuff from the 60's. Hectic's just being gay.

Marvin Gaye was brilliant and perhaps the best of the lot.

Must admit, I can't think of any R&B I've ever liked... Generally against dismissing entire genres of music, but on the proviso that soul, rhythm and blues and hip-hop are all good - R&B is shit.

But soul now, soul is fecking awesome, and so here's some good shit to drown out any R&B that gets posted:

(feck knows what those monkeys have to do with it, but it's a gorgeous song)

Bloody hell. D'Angelo is old R&B/Soul?

Way to make a caftard feel ancient, Hectic :(

You spazzers,

I can only speak from my experience, obviously the real old stuff like the knights, reeding, Cooke, Brown, Charles, Pickett, Burke, Gaye etc and shit go way back, and that is the classic r&b, but Kinky specifically talked about the new stuff, and I was answering a quote as an example of what's changed in the last 20 or so years.

D'angelo is a prime example of how R&B has completely changed in our generation.

D'angelo is also an example of how classic r&b progressed as well.

When I hear 'R&b' I think Louis Jordan. What you may be referring to is badly synthed 'black pop'. But then again I never bother to listen to it so it doesn't make me angry.

I just died a bit.

D'angelo is the original master.

Brown Sugar is a monster album! Shame it takes him about 9 years to make one.

Urban Hang suite was recorded a tad earlier, I think. But I don't think there's been a better album in the neo classical soul or whatever it was called genre. Put it this way loads of artist were doing that type of music back then.

Obviously I generalise. Ok I have yet to hear a R&B song I like. I listen to Jazz FM every day and for that god forsaken hour that they put on R&B I switch to NME. Once it's over and the Jazz is back on I'm back to the best

I'm a fan of some of Michael Jackson's stuff. I hated his R&B stuff. I don't think people are hearing me here. I dislike the style

It's a bit like me saying I hate Basketball as a sport or game and someone trying to win me over by telling me how great the Lakers are. I HATE the game. I dislike how it's played, the scoring etc etc

Do I have an audience ????!!!!!!

And I hate Boyz 2 Men or however the feck it's spelt. End of the Road, I'll make love to you and all that shite.

"I'll make love to you, like you want me to...."

Bollox. I'll whip my boxers off in a drunken mess, refuse to take my top off due to insecurities, I'll last 7 minutes due to being extremely unfit and I'll fail to jip because I've had too much booze. And she won't mind because she'll be the same.

This is why the lyrics are absolute bollox. You ever hear an R&B song about vaginal farts ?

Didn't feckin think so

I fecking hate R. Kelly - even leaving aside the whole pissing on kids thing, his music is just leaves me entirely cold.

Vandross has an incredible voice, but again the actual song is just... boring. It doesn't convey emotion, it conveys technical brilliance - and that's just boring.

Give me something like this any day:

It just seems sad to me, soul kind of died as a popular genre and from it was born the over produced sleek and shiny sound of modern R&B...

Actually hang on.......I like Barry White, but that's because Barry White was unique, or certainly unique from my level of knowledge. He had that voice. It was great !

But the bollox you hear these days with 5 amazingly talented vocalists 'vocal acrobating' over one another. Every song is like the finale is a feckin trapeze act. It's TOO much

I'm not saying there were never amazing musicians who wrote great songs that are classed as R&B. I am saying that from what I gather R&B to be over the last 20 years it's complete horse shit

Not really sure if I'd describe The Walrus of Love as R&B... he was unique, and his style, while hugely influential on what became R&B was more of a combination of soul, funk and disco... in my opinion at least
