I actually thought the complete opposite. The problem with the assistant manager always being them being in SAF's shadow and eventually wanting out to pursue their own careers, it occurred to me there might be less friction with this guy both being a foreigner and having had his go at managing different teams.

He might be a lot happier to be simply staff for a long time.

I would say that this may be a strategic move. The new guy comes in, gets used to the system and then a smooth transition for him to the helm in 2005, when Ferguson finally retired.

Any new assistant who came in would be considered the replacement for when SAF leaves in 2005. SAF signs well-known manager with experience as his back-up and with him leaving soon people put two and two together and assume this man is gonna take over. Won’t necessarily work that way imo. Anyone could become manager in three years time, and we’ll have to wait and see instead of guessing.

anyway if i didn't remember incorrectly, fergie was going on in an interview last yr about having an assistant where he can sort out affairs on the pitch, leaving him to concentrate solely on other stuffs i.e. the case of Bayern Munich... maybe this Queiroz guy is THAT guy?

Excellent first move of the summer.

As important as any new player we will sign.

Hopefully Qeuiroz will provide the tactical acumen that was so lacking in our play last season.

Could well be. He isn't like Kiddo or McLaren - although I hope he proves to be as successful as them (and more). Thing is, he's been a head coach for respectable national teams and Sporting, so he could well prove just 'that guy' and shoulder a lot of the workload.

Someone said we didn't know if he can motivate the players, but thats why Fergie's around as he's the best it at. We all agreed what we needed was the 'technical guy', the tactical genious and someone to throw in idea's with Sir Alex.

As for British coaches, we've had two of the very best, but obviously Fergie felt he was bringing someone in who's got more than any available british coach can offer him.

This guy should open up the Spanish/Portugese market to us the way Houllier & Wenger have the French.....Good move I hope!

Is it?

The French, Dutch, and Scandinavians seem to fit in better imo.

Jury definitely still out on Latins - we have yet to see a successful team in this country that has achieved success because of Latin players.

The French happen to be termed as "Latins".

Eric comes from the South of France with "Latin" Blood.... I think he was reasonably successful

True.

But they aren't as Latin as the Spanish/Portuguese/Italians.

No English team that I can think of, has been successful with Italian players etc.

e.g. Chelsea = full of potential which amounts to nowt.

It's pretty obvious that the Spanish and Italian leagues are stonger than the French/Dutch/Scandie.

Italians and Spaniards don't have to come here to play in great teams.

The notion that the likes of Totti, Vieri, Cannavaro etc would not do well here is absurd. It is just that the best Spaniards and Italians have not come here.

Meanwhile there are plenty of crap Scandanvian players in the EPL.

This is an encouraging news. I see it as an ambitious move by the club. As an experienced manager/coach in international football, I think Mr Queiroz will definitely bring more innovation and tactical variations to us.

Not disputing the fact that Italy and Spain etc. have great players, better than many English, Scandinavians.

But the style of play is different. Therefore, the Premier league suits Northern Europeans more.

Have to admit, hes an unknown to me but i find that encouraging. When Kiddo left we all had a list of the obvious candidates in our heads. Fergie went out, asked around and got someone highly regarded in coaching circles. The fact that he has taken some time again to choose someone, ignoring the obvious candidates , suggests to me he has again identified someone with the right coaching credentials. Best news ( only bloody good news!) since the end of the season.
