Queen

That's insane.

It isn't as insane as you think. When you have one of the biggest selling albums of all time (Greatest Hits), and over the past 5 or 6 years they've released a few live dvd's/cd's of shows they've done. Plus add to the re=releases of albums on vinyl and the 3 singles box sets, they've kept the kitty ticking over. Plus last year they added a 4th Greatest hits cd out, all be it a compilation of the 3 previous, they've made sure the income keeps coming in.

Plus when you add to all the times you hear Queen songs on adverts, on tv shows and also at sporting venues it all adds up in the end.

The band, that is.

From age ~6-12 it was probably the only band I listened to. I still love them to bits, and I can probably challenge anyone in a Brian May air guitar solo contest. Any other fans? What's your favourite songs? If I was to single out a song it would be this:

And George Michaels fantastic rendition of Somebody to Love deserves a mention.

Now, fill this thread with youtube clips!

Yep - massive Queen Fan here!
Lucky enough to meet them all and see them 6 times in concert!
LOVE THEM!

Roger Taylor - BSc (hon) biology
John Deacon - BSc (hon) 1st class - electronics
Freddie Mercury - Dip in Art & Design...

I don't think it's fair that Brian gets singled out for being so clever, the whole bloody band were. Add to that Brian built his own guitar which he still uses. Deacon built amps that were used by May and himself. Deacon and May helped create design of the light rigs they used to use. Freakingly over clever that lot were.

Also Mercury designed the Queen "Crest" which was used on Albums and merchandise from "A Night at the opera" onwards!

Love Queen my all time fav group , was lucky to see them at Maine Road many years ago.
Freddie was such a show man , he was Queen, when he died it was not the same .
Although Paul Rodgers is also a show man and a good singer , he is not in the same class has Freddie , the only person that has come even close to filling Freddie boots was George Micheal and thats was for only one single.
There as a rummour that he was going to takeover from Freddie at one time.

Fav live is

Fav of all is

but this is still the best song

Queen are one of those groups you either love or hate.

I hear this alot about George Micheal, and whilst yes he was good at the Tribute gig, do you think he's capable of singing Tie Your Mother Down or Hammer to Fall with any sort of authority? He's more suited to the pop orientated songs, and I can't see any Queen (in any way, shape or form) leaving out the heavier songs, on any tour.

I always felt that Gary Cherrone did a great job at the Tribute gig, as he basically treated it as an audition. However, having not heard his voice for a few years and the slack he got from the Van Halen fans, suggests he was at his best within a band on the edges. Freddie was unique and shouldn't be replaced, which is why they went for Rodgers, who if I'm honest was awful. Using screens so he could remember the lyrics and taking time off stage leaving Brian and Roger to take the strain.

Oh god yes I agree , he would be crap at the heavier songs , he did well with the song he did and thats about it.
Nobody can take Freddie's place.
I heard the Paul Rodger's stuff with Queen and to be honest I had to turn it off , I thought it was dire.
I would of been happy if Brain and Rodger called it a day now and did no more touring.

If I'm being honest I don't think Brian would do another solo tour, but I could see Roger doing something. Rumours are that he is going to release a compliation package of all his solo stuff. Roger live is great, seen him twice at the Manchester Academy, and he threw in some real old Queen stuff to boot. I have heard the rumour that they are about to leave EMI soon and move over the Universal, due to EMI's money troubles, which if true would mean another tour of some sort to make it worth while for Universal to take them. Plus there is a load of unreleased stuff that they could put out.

actually, they were interested in adam lambert joining them, when he did american idol with them at last years's finale, but he was more interested in a solo act ( at present )
adam lambert is without doubt, the closest i've heard to freddie, he's a brilliant singer.

I have to admit, apart from the stuff from the tribute concert I haven't heard anything from Queen post-Freddie. I think Freddie Mercury was too unique to ever replace in any way and I think they should have called it a day for Queen when he died.

Really , I did not know that some new Queen stuff would be fantastic

If the rumours are true they should have at least one more album of stuff they could clean up and release. Ranging from the 70's through the 80's. Though how much work some require I don't know.

Lambert does a good job with Queen, however as I said before Freddie can not be replaced, you can find someone who has a similar vocal range, but please don't try and replace him, be yourself. Paul Rodgers was just wrong for lots of reasons, though he's very good with his own stuff.

Plus as a side point to all those in here that call Queen, don't forget that Roger Taylor did release and donate the monies from "Dear Mr Murdoch" single he did to the fight to stop Sky taking over United.

And it's been 20 years since Freddie Mercury died, gee, I'm getting old.

Queen were shit.

Each to there own , but I dont know anybody that does not like 1 or 2 Queen songs.
They were/are a million times better than most of the shit that is round today , they wrote there own music , played there own instruments.
My favourite all time group , went to see them at Maine Road and they were fantastic.
20 years today Freddie died , makes me feel old and a bit sad :(

I'm not knocking Queen, but there are loads amazing of bands around today that make great music.

What bands today will be remembered as fondly in 20/30/40 years time? I'm struggling to think of any.

Queen were like The Beatles, generally speaking universally loved (as in its the exception rather than the rule if you don't like them) and wrote timeless music.

Oh I can see U2 still being played in 20/30 years, but cant see the likes of Coldpaly still being fondly remembered.

Yeah I can see that too, but the pinnacle of U2 really was the mid/late 80s and early nineties, in my mind. Who knows though, maybe they can be classed as a band of this generation too.

I agree about Coldplay too, maybe one or two songs will survive the test of time but overall as a band I can't see it.

Can't see many modern bands enjoying more than cult status in the future. I can see Muse getting some love from future generations of alternative music fans.

Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, etc.

Queen was deliberately radio friendly. It was decent music with a charismatic frontman. Nothing more.

Paul Rodgers was a better rock/blues singer than Mercury, but freddies voice suits queen's songs better and obviously hes no replacement for that, itd be like Freddie Mercury trying to do Free songs, theyd just be poor in comparison.

I can agree with all of that , I did not like Paul Rodgers sing Queen song , IMHO he did not do them justice.
But Paul Rodger's sing his own Free song's is excellent.
Queen was Freddie and they quickly saw that he was the one that would make Queen what it was, without Freddie Queen would of not happened.

I love Paul Rogers in Free and Bad Company , both great bands
