Protests against Russian law in Tbilisi, Georgia

Elections today. It seems there are already ballot shenanigans.

Big day. if its obviously rigged, the people may not stand for it, especially with Russia's weakness right now.

Ruling party (Georgian Dream) officials already making claims of having secured a solid majority. This is amongst reports of street brawls at voting stations, allegedly initiated by Georgian Dream supporters.

It's looking like a chaotic election so far.

I think there’s little to no doubt that the Georgian Dream will proclaim its victory (I’m really not sure about the real chances of either side as my own bias is fully in the opposition’s corner — but, sadly, they have a lot of supporters). They still hold pretty much all the administrative power and they’re going to use it all (and I’m not talking about legitimate actions).

Exitpolls expected in 30 minutes, but ruling party seems confident.

For some context, the ruling party (GD) has a legit organic voter base. Among them fo example are people who:
  • Think that the opposition parties want to drag Georgia into another war with Russia.
  • Don't want "LGBT propaganda" in the country.
  • Feel that the economy is doing fine and prefer continuity.
They resemble some of the right-wing voters in Western countries. That being said, there is fear on the other side of Georgia being turned into Belarus and the country shifting towards Russia instead of the West/EU.

However, one of the opposition parties itself is despised by some Georgians because of political scandals in the past. The current ruling party capitalized on that and gained power roughly a decade ago.

I think Putinist elections have distorted your scale here
I don't know, maybe it's my distorted foreigner's understanding of English language. After all, isn't there a famous expression "is the glass half empty or overwhelmed with water?" or something along those lines?

Ruling party GD secured a majority. But now we'll have to see if the results will be recognized.

That's Georgia well on its way to becoming Belarus, then.
I think they’re still a long way off. Belarus never was a democracy and Lukashenko had total control over every institute of power in the country which is how he had managed to stay in power despite losing the election with embarrassing result (we don’t know the actual numbers but we have an estimate).

Not to mention that Russia still occupies a part of Georgia and, believe me when I tell you, Georgians did not forget about it. There’s about a 50/50 split between a conservative and in many ways pro-Russian (although to simply label them Russian agents would be to simplify things; Ivanishvili has his own agendas but allying with Russia on some matters and using their patented repressive mechanisms suit them well) Georgian Dream and the Euro-centric opposition (that is, sadly, not actually united on anything else aside from, well, opposing the GD).

I think something like Kazakhstan is a better comparison political-wise although Georgia is way smaller and way more dependent on Russia economically (Kazakhstan, especially after the beginning of the invasion, can negotiate on a lot of issues from the position of power).

History repeating... Russia has a lot to deal with right now.

It's ironic that they haven't fecking learnt.

Euromaidan went so huge so quickly because 90% of the people who were pro EU at first didn't care enough about it or gave that much of a shit until they watched their sons, daughters, neices, nephews, grandsons and grandkids get the shit kicked out of them by police on Live TV.

And to all you feckwads who say Ukraine was about NATO.

Are you going to rewrite history and say Georgia was about NATO too?

Several Georgian diplomats abroad have resigned and the demonstrations seem to have been bigger today than in recent days. My guess is the ruling party Georgian Dream will reverse their decision to halt EU membership. Not sure they can ignore this.

Situation in Georgia seems to be getting worse. Government getting increasingly aggressive.

I hope they all fecking burn. So many shit governments around the world all at once.
