Proposal to adopt Argentina as the Caf's official World Cup team

Honestly the mods as well call this thread “Argentina official World Cup Discussion” just like how Brazil and England have one.

Anyway apparently Acuna is being tested for injury, although they also have Tagliafico who is a solid option at left back.

Better depth than four years ago for sure.
 
Who in the Argentinian team needs to get injured to let Garnacho in?

What is CAF policy on wishing injury on players.
 
@Infordin will Molina start at RB?

I thought your defense was gonna be Molina-Romero-Martinez-Tagliafico but now it looks like Romero isn't fit and Acuna and Foyth (perhaps even Otamendi) might feature as well?
 
Always liked them, Argentina is my 2nd homeland although I've never been there so yes.

Foyth is the defensive choice, Molina is the attacking choice.
Tagliafico is the defensive choice, Acuna is the attacking choice.

Depends on the opposition.

If I compare to say England, I do think that Argentina is quite average in the fullback position. That said, in my opinion, they have better central defenders and also a better goalkeeper.
 
Why Argentina? We have no United representatives in this Argentina team. If we want to adopt, at least go for Brazil or England.

Great thread , I think a lot of what this team is achieving is being lost due to some agenda driven/ axe grinding from various media sources.

I don't know how anyone can watch these guys cry in post game interviews, as they try and express the enormity of the relief they feel that they haven't disappointed an entire nation which is in desperate need of a "Win" , and think .. "cnuts".

I can only assume people are completely out of touch with the reality of day to day life in Argentina and how much of an escape from the claustrophobia of existing here that this team is providing to tens of millions of people daily.

You can be 100% sure that the players aren't as unaware (they mention it constantly) as their critics are.

I'm proud of them for how they are making my friends and family feel, which is actually hopeful for once.

People here watch Licha play and think "Wow, I'm delighted he's in a United shirt because I feel like I can relate to him due to the fact he actually cares!'

Argentina have 26 of those guys.

National Heros.

If the team win this Sunday the Argentinian people's tears of happiness will finally stem the tide of despair that flows through the streets and flood their homes and I for one hope to Diego Maradona that they do.

So football is great for populism ? That’s what I don’t like in football. It won’t do anything for the situation of Argentinians. They will be as poor as before. It won’t change their life. And people should fight for their rights and to share ressources instead being happy because of something which is a game, a distraction.

It actually is. Winning the cup in a poor country like Argentina would make sure that more kids try much harder. Yes most of them won't be playing in the PL but a lot of them would make enough money to take themselves and their families out of poverty. It's not enough but it still is something. Something better than poverty they experienced before.

I dont think a momentary feeling of national pride automatically translates to populism personally (unless a positive sense of national pride automatically equals Populism?), I would have assumed it would have to be weaponized by a political party for that to be the case (around an election?) and the national side isn't really tied with a particular political party (it's not a dictatorship) and a world cup win doesn't ensure a continuation of the status quo.

It will make people feel happy, isn't that what football is all about?

What should the economic situation be in a country ( or even for an individual) before they are allowed to enjoy a sports event?

If we feel that way then why even bother with sport at all when we can just sit and contemplate our own shuffle down lifes mortal coil free from distraction?

It wont make them contract a memory disorder (which makes the them forget about what's happened previously) and it also won't pay their monthly bills following so it's not like it's sportswashing peoples minds and everyone is happy forever afterward.

If the idea was that you had to have your life magically fixed due to your team winning then all sport is pointless right?

Many people in Argentina would describe the 86 final win as life changing too, it's one of the main reasons that Diego is a god here.

People are fighting here today , tomorrow and will be fighting on Monday too.

Sunday will just be like that game of football in the trenches during world war 2, a momentary white flag in the fight for survival.

It's escapism, those folk will be happy even if for just a few moments, that's worth quite some.

Football is the sport of the working class, it gives people relief from their lives to support a team.

Look at a lot of the teams with working class and their attendances, you can see it at OT, Dortmund for example.

It's entertainment for people, nothing wrong with it.

I think government legislation, investing in education, schooling helps eradicate poverty but that's something completely different to sport, its like saying kids shouldn't watch Marvel because it won't improve their lives.
