Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 / PES 2013

I really really want to like this game, but I just can't. The game physics and AI are just so inferior to Fifa. The defending truly is abysmal. 8/10 simple through balls just go straight through the defence.

Disagree. The ball doesn't feel magnetically attracted to the players like in FIFA and there's unpredictability about the way the ball moves. The AI is pretty tough too. Have you played on Superstar yet? And the variety of goals I've scored is amazing.

I think the defending is the most enjoyable I've ever experienced in a football game. I genuinely have fun defending for the first time in a game rather than it being a mechanical process to get past before you get the ball and the game comes alive again.

At first, the CPU was opening me up on the counter pretty easily but I've gotten better since then.

PES is always like this. There is a learning curve. It was the same with dribbling. I was finding it impossible to beat a man until I understood the intricacies of the game and got used to the system.

Oh I thought he was talking about his own teams defending. And play on one level assisted passing if you think opening teams up is too easy.

Stop playing on easy then bhoy! ;)

I'm playing on Top Player smartass. I'm talking about my own team's defending.

In previous FIFAs I would agree with you here but with the new first touch system that they've brought in this year, I find it harder in this respect. Also, the fact that you can't make your players do off the ball runs is a disappointment in my opinion. Movement can be very static at times i.e. say your in the opponents final 3rd and players aren't making any runs it can be quite frustrating, because you find yourself holding the ball up before someone makes a run and by that time it may be too late.

The advantage I think FIFA has in this respect is that you can choose when to close down an opponent AND when to make the challenge, whereas in PES you just press a button to close down and the AI chooses when to challenge.

The main through ball problem that I have is when you're tightly marking a centre forward and getting the CPU to close down the player with possession, they play the through ball to the striker and it goes right through my player. Most of the time the player I'm controlling doesn't even attempt to intercept or tackle, sometimes he attempts to intercept the pass but completely misses the ball, leading the striker to be clean through on goal. Extremely annoying, especially considering the fact that defending is the best part of my game.

@unitedboy

You need to go through the controls in more detail.

You CAN make your team mates make off the ball runs. Just hold your R joystick in the direction of the team mate you want to make a run forward and then press it down. You can also control your team mates movement completely if you want to. So off the ball movment is pretty advanced in pes as compared to Fifa.

And you CAN tackle as and when you want to. That's what makes defending so great on this for me. Hold X (Ps3) to press (as you are) and double tap X to time your tackle. Like I said, best tackling/defending system I've played so far.

fecking hell, this changes everything. I was always going to give it more chances, I never give up on a PES that easy. I'm a huge fan of the early series. Will give it a go tonight.

Yeh the off the ball stuff is fantastic. It's quite fiddly to get to grips with at first but once you do it's ace.

It is dawning on me that the learning curve for this game is immense. The fact that I've accustomed myself to FIFA probably isn't helping.

:lol::lol:

I won pro evo tournaments on the PS2. I completely agree. I get schooled on top player by Barca, when I used to beat the hardest level by 5-6 goals on the PS2 games. This is very rewarding though. This game makes me angry at times, but there are so many nuances. I love it so far.

Yeah, it's taken me awhile to reacclimatize to PES but it's been worth it.

Although I'm still not sure how I finished 5th with Arsenal and made it into the CL.

Yeah, started the Master League with the default players and it is tough. Their first touch is abysmal. This is going to take a lot of practice to master. But I'm determined, because PES can only get better from here. It is a good starting point.

I find R2 + X to hold off the player and then Square to bring in COM help works well too in some cases.

The only thing I don't like is even after turning auto slide off, they still seem to dive in.

What does R2 do when you don't have the ball?

What formation and tactical setting does everyone use? I'm using the default 4-4-2, and it's pretty darn defensive. A LOT of my games are ending 0-0. MY strikers aren't good enough yet to be able to run attack on their own.

Plus if you hold down R2 and x at the same time the player you are using will just stand up the player trying to beat him thus giving you a chance to double up on the cnut.

make sure your not touching the sprint button when you receive the ball otherwise you will take an extremely heavy touch, use R2 when receiving the ball to keep it under control.

Yep, doing that. You learn that pretty quickly when your controlling the shower of shite that is the pro evolution default team. Mimandinho is abysmal

A few tips I can give after getting fairly good at this game:

1. Don't overuse the sprint button. I'm a bit used to smashing the sprint button in FIFA because the game is build largely around pace, but in PES you have to use in much more sparingly. It's all about picking the right moment to use the burst of pace.

2. Be careful not to press teams too much. I often find that I concede goals easily if I send one defender after another at the attacker carelessly out of impatience. It's important to know when to sit back and get numbers and when to take the attacker out when in trouble.

3. Try and not get stuck in patterns. I started out often looking for patterns which I'd keep repeating. One thing I love about this game is that it makes you try to really open up the opposition rather than do one trick again and again.

4. Finally, I'd suggest lowering the passing assistance. The passing is brilliant when set to 1 bar passing assistance (for me at least, some might be using 0). It took a few days to get used to but it makes passing a lot more fun.

Keep fighting the good fight Amol!

I will :)

PES this time really deserves more attention than it's getting. It's a very very good game.

Anyone think players develop a bit too fast in ML? My Arsenal team has 4 players in the 90s now, including Walcott, Vermalen and Giroud. Even Koschielmy is 87.

It's fecked a lot of people off over the last 5 years or so. If it's a good game and they maintin the improvement we've seen then it'll win the fans back.... in time.

True, but it has also to do with the respective hype attached to the franchises. FIFA (the game) is much bigger brand in general. So even when they did a good game (10 or 11) after dishing out nonsense for ages, it got the attention. PES has to work much harder to gain attention due to a far smaller brand.

True but that's always been the case. FIFA was always the popular brand with it's fancy graphics (back then) and licenses but the real gamer chose PES. It will always have too contend with FIFA being the giant in the genre.

Doesn't mean they can't get back to the level they were at though.

Did you not try ML with the default players? It's a decent challenge on Top Player. A lot of bore draws. When you score a goal it feels like you've just won the league!

Not yet. After my Arsenal career ill give it a go. Which club did you take?

Well I took Nottingham Forrest but that was with the Daymos v2 option file. ut the option file caused my ML to freeze so I had to downgrade to the v1.5 file (which doesn't have Championship teams). So now I'm FC Norwtiedghe....or something along those lines.

Despite giving away tips like an expert I'm still not great at defending on Superstar level. No matter how the game goes, I tend to always concede at least a goal. Maybe the matches I play are too long. I play 15 minute games.

Aiming at a 3rd place finish in my second season with Arsenal which isn't a great achievement given how much my players have improved.

Thoroughly enjoying ML so far but I think it's strange that all my players have improved drastically. Wilshere is 99 when played as a CM, Wakcott is 93 and Carzola 95. Even Giroud is 92. At the same time I just played United and their players have barely improved. Rooney is 93.

I'm not over achieving but the rating thing is annoying me.

The only way to keep it fun is to sell your best players and bring through youth players.

The problem with Arsenal is that most of the team reaches absurd ratings so I while I wouldn't mind selling a Walcott who's far better than his real self, I wouldn't want to sell half the squad.

If I lower the initial rating would it lower the potential as well? I did that with Arteta and he stagnated. He was originally an 88 in the game that I lowered to 84, and he's stayed at that. On the other hand Giroud has gone from 79 to 92 in 2.5 seasons :lol:Wilshere is now 100 in central midfield at the age of 22.

Got it today, the game flows really well. It feels quite natural and the AI is definitely an improvement, best PES in a long time.

Started a new ML with United. Arsenal's players were getting unrealistically good. I'm going to do this one ML with a big team before I move on to a small team (possibly with the default lineup).

I just can't win all the time on the highest difficulty. I hate tricks and the like, and it is very hard to beat the defenders without them. :(

Played this with a work colleague a few days back.

PES, no matter how 'shit' it is, is always fun playing with a mate. The sheer unpredictability and excitement the game manages to conjure up is incredible.

It is noticeably slower than PES 12 in terms of the pace of hte game, and especially the dribbling but it makes for more structured, team-oriented play. Really tempted to get a Playstation 3 now just to play this on a regular basis.

Love this game, best football game out and for a while too. Just great how it plays, the movement and passing compared to the run nature of FIFA. Just got a copy of FIFA13 only just now as picked it up with Black Ops2 and man is it poor, just the same game with updates. You play this after and its like watching a real CL match or something, better visuals and more importantly better play.

I'm still not used to the tackling on this though.

For me its ace but know what you mean about unpredictable. The goals are great, all types scored not just the same old automated net positions let FIFA.

Unpredictable is the wrong word, I probably meant something like unsystematic. I feel like I'm not going through the motions when I play the game, which makes it genuinely fun.

And yea, you can score any type of goal you want. So fun. They should give Zlatan the ability to score his wonder goals
