As I recall it wasn't really in our hands. The business as you call it was conducted by some rather 'dodgy' people. At the time SAF was extremely keen on him.
We can't say how it would have worked out; we could have made him a far better player. But hey, he's won a shit load of medals so he's hardly complaining
Mikel used to be good (a long time ago), I don't know where the hell his motivation went. Just happy to collect his salary nowadays.
