Because we are highly unlikely to do better than City during the remainder of the season. Qualifying for the Champions League is really important so it's best to be as far away from the chasing pack as possible. Spurs keeping up with us is bad news because we're not finishing above City so we have to make sure that at least one of Newcastle and Spurs stays behind us - and with the fixture congestion and our squad that's not going to be easy.
How can bringing another spot into a top 4 race while maintaining our lead against 5th be a bad thing?

You’re basing a lot here on your assumptions and not what’s happening on the pitch then are surprised not many agree with you?
If we aren’t finishing above City then they’ll take points off all of our rivals in the second half of the season right? If not then we’ll be up there with them if not out right ahead.

City are 3 points ahead with a massive advantage in goal difference. If they had drawn, we would need 6 points more than them to move up. As it is, we just need 4 points. Ceteris paribus this was a great result for us. Even if you think ceteris is not paribus, there’s a team in between Spurs and us.
Either way helps us. There isn’t a universe where we cant catch City and if we can’t catch them that means they’ve gone on a run and taken points off our rivals.

We're 3 points points behind after 21 games, in better current form and have already played Arsenal twice whilst they haven't played them at all yet. This seems a bit if a self defeating attitude to take given the current situstion

Surely you understand that if City go on a big run - which I absolutely expect because they have a habit of doing so - after losing to Spurs, that's the worst possible outcome for us? They stay ahead of us after giving three points to a rival.

We lost Casemiro for three games and Eriksen until the end of April, we don't have a reliable and quality centre forward and our attacking play basically relies on Rashford entirely.
Frankly, ETH is performing miracles with all that but keeping it up in the circumstances is a huge ask.

We have 1 game against the rest of the top 4, the other three have 3 each.
If City don’t go in a run then we have a great chance of catching City. That’s not even including the side who are actually top of the league at the minute playing our rivals as well.
Arsenal are top, Newcastle are fourth while Chelsea are 10th and Liverpool 9th. The problem seems to be you being so steadfast in City going on a run from nowhere instead of thinking maybe it’s not 100 percent nailed on? It doesn’t make any sense to act as if one side of your argument is 100 percent going to happen while other variables are all in the table
