Those two plus Pogba looks great on paper as a midfielder 3. Gueye shields the defense, Neves passes it from deep whilst Pogba handles most of what happens in the final third. Fred has proven that he is not completely useless as we thought, so him with Matic and Pereira as back ups is not so bad. I think Scott should go on loan so that we can see what he is about when starting regularly
 
Rabiot seems like a no brainer with Woodward in charge. Young, international profile, "free" transfer.
 
I wouldn't want Herrera to leave but not being funny but it shouldn't be hard to replace a Spanish midfielder who is never anywhere near the national team squad
 
Looks like we're going to have to start seriously thinking about this question, then.

So 1 x midfielder this summer now looks like being two, if we're serious. Along with a CB, a RW and possibly a RB or LB.

Christ, it's like we're constantly having to put out fires every summer. I wish we were stable enough to only need 2 serious signings per summer, to upgrade a first teamer on the way out.

Would take any of these, and while I like Herrera I think most of these players would be an upgrade on him for the long term.

His on the pitch demeanour and performances most definitely had merited his name to be found in the "next captain material" but unfortunately our management has failed to act accordingly and approach this contract extension with more resolve and urgency.
 
It's ridiculous that we actually have to entertain this idea, all because of contract negotiation missteps.

Disgraceful from the club if he's let go while we keep Smalling, Jones and the like; especially when Ole said we need to reinforce our midfield
 
Also, after all the bullshit PSG have been pulling, throwing tantrums after losing that game, this would be a real slap in the face. It's not like he'll be a first team player in Paris

To be fair, I think Smalling and Jones are like pigs in mud here and likely signed the first offer put in front of them - not concerned with who the manager was at the time or who it was going to be 6 months down the road.

This is just a guess, but it is likely that Herrera was offered while Jose was still in charge and refused it because he saw where that was headed. If he's been offered another contract since Ole took over and has not been assured that Ole will be staying, then fair play to him for telling the club to get their act together. I'm not his biggest fan, but I can tell he's clever enough to know when to move on. And competitive enough to want to add some bigger trophies to his cabinet.
 
Herrera doesn’t seem the type to me that would really want to leave. Genuinely think he loves the club, unless he’s thinking that before he retires he would love a league winners medal even if it is ligue 1.
Clubs perspective can’t see why they would let him go unless they have a replacement already lined up who they think is better or maybe we just don’t have the cash available in the wage structure with possible new players coming in to give him the raise he wants.

Anyway to me he is the glue that makes that midfield work and given Matic and Pogba feel like we would need someone with drive and ability so for me Saúl, Ndombele and this Barrela who looks very intresting.
 
If we let Herrera go, i want to see Eriksen come in. We'll also need a mobile CDM though. I don't think Matic can cover for Pogba and Eriksen. It'll never happen, but we had CL ambition it'd be the kind of move we'd make.
 
Even if he stays I'd like Eriksen. I'd like to see us like up in midfield with;

It'll never happen. I just feel our current owners aren't willing to invest in 3-4 world class players to get us back on top. Though they did invest in Sanchez, but i wonder how much of that was because they got themselves a good deal, rather than wanting a good player (at the time we mostly thought it was a good deal).

I think we need two midfielders. One holding and one slightly more advanced with Pogba being the furthest forward.

Id take Rice as the holding midfielder and one of the other 3 as the link between holding and Pogba.

I would include Eriksen but i feel like he is too similar to Pogba and would really only be an option if Pogba left.

I like Rice, but still worry about the difference of playing for WHU to the pressure cooker that is Manchester United at his age. If we do get him he will need a lot of time and patience.

I Don't know. He could thrive on it. If the idea is to build a young squad that plays together for years with a strong homegrown core. Getting Rice in to learn from players like Matic and coaches like Carrick, is a great idea.

I like Herrera a lot but think he can be replaced. I would go for Doucoure to add a bit energy and dynamism to the midfield.
 
It depends on if we are also getting a holding midfieldfer in, if we get a much more mobile DM specialist then that opens up other types of CM's we can look at to replace Herrera, but looking at how we operate Matic will still be lumbering around in our midfield next season so we'll need a fairly direct replacement.

I do think we need to be bringing in progressive players this summer,though.
Players who look to play the forward pass rather than ones notorious in playing the (boring) 'safety passess'.
 
Wilfred Ndidi has crazy tackle and interception stats but his passing could be a little bit average.
