Tactics were wrong that’s on Jose

We sat back to hit them on counter yet played with 5 attackers with pogba meaning midfield was wide open
If we are gonna sit deep we need to block up the midfield and not make it so easy to play through. Spurs are not arsenal

Regardless pogba was shite
Lukaku cannot continue to wait around up top. Even when ball does come to him he has to hold it up better

Sanchez is quality his desire to even win the ball back when 2 down shows desire some players lack urging people up the field pressing tackling all while gettin kicked to pieces by spurs

Spurs are still just game raises they won’t win anything IMo but they defitely deserved today’s win as we were terrible

Every time we have played spurs den lee looks like best midfielder on the planet for the last 5 years. I just don’t see that from him in other games at all.

Hope to feck we beat Huddersfield on Saturday

He didn’t try at all. Never seen such a half-arsed performance ever in my lifetime. It was a not-arsed performance.
That's not true. Of course he could have been better, but 0? That's an overreaction. Try blaming the manager for not having a proper structure for the attackers to flourish in.

One bad game from Martial and people can't wait to jump all over him.

Is anyone else a bit pissed off with Paul Pogba for not being effective in a midfield two? I just don't think it's acceptable.

It's like a bus driver saying he can only drive a diesel bus not an electric one. Or he can't drive coaches on a motorway journey very well.

I can't think of many world class midfield players who have only 1 effective position. Ozil maybe.

Why should he be good in a position that isn't his position? Thats mental. We should play to his strengths and stop trying to make him into a player he's not, it's a total waste.

Bad performance, think we know that from now on we need to play 3 cm in the middle. I think when you have such a bad start you need a big response. Never turned up, Spurs were comfortable. Hopefully a bad night and we bounce back with a bit more structure at Huddersfield.

Dont know why he brought on Mata tbh. They were running rings around us and he is the last person you want on when you are being dominated.

You missed my edit;

I don't support the idea of replacing him, but he really needs to re-evaluate his style of football.

And yes, why is it everytime Mourinho has to either park the bus and sacrifice good attacking play in order to win. And at certain times when he does play an attacking side, it's either the midfield or defence that lacks.

We ain't going to be successful when we going for a PL title or a CL title until he gets it right.

It is pretty simple, Mourinho has only played football one way, that is defensive way. He has no idea how to set-up a team for attack. Atleast not against top teams. In last 2 years Mourinho has worst record against top 6 teams. Worse then Spurs and Arsenal.

At this point I'm trying to at least have a laugh or two about it. Any lol-worthy comments from José yet post match?

For sheer apathy, I think it has to be.

Mourinho is being criticised for his approach, but even he must’ve been quietly stunned by how amateurish we were.

I think Chelsea last season in Chelsea was worst.

Not really sure where Sanchez MotM comes from.
Yeah, he tried. There were quite a few who tried. It was like the pitch was tilted like the Titanic, only we played uphill both halves. Very motivated Spurs, means more to them than us, etc etc. But still disappointing. Hopefully their hectic spell coming up grinds them into the ground. And hopefully we come back with a bang next game. I am not too pessimistic, hopefully someone has (some very well chosen words) with PP.

Just a shower of shit all round. Why didn’t Jose stick to his principles and go with a more defensive approach, why did he have to move our best player of late, Martial, who is also a big sulk then revert him back after the first half. He was clearly annoyed and it showed with some poor choices and lack of desire. Why can’t he play Shaw who is miles better than Young and those subs when chasing a game - a snail with the body strength of a poodle and a giant with the touch and grace of a hammer. Spurs were probably in disbelief of how much easier Jose made it for them.
Really pissed off tonight, would have been happy with a point before kickoff but in reality we could have lost 5 nil easily. My last rant is Lukaku, we are not winning leagues with him leading the line, not a chance unless we add Messi and Neymar to the team, he reminds me of a more prolific Heskey, just painful to watch at times. This team still has clear problems that Alexis Sanchez doesn’t come close to fixing on his own.

Allowing our Centre Backs to have the ball at their feet as they are pub team standard with it.

Can't argue with that based on their performances tonight. You could see that neither Jones nor Smalling wanted the ball. At one stage in the 2nd half I recall Matic charging back to take it off them as they were so reluctant to play a forward pass, unacceptable for defenders at this level.

This has killed my optimism about signing Sanchez, if we aren't gonna play Sanchez on the right or central then there was no point in signing him.

Also Matic had by far his worst game for United but I can forgive that for the most part he has been very consistently good.

WTF happened with Pogba getting subbed off, did he get injured? Fellaini. If he wasn't fit then why the hell did he come on? Should've brought on Herrera if anyone.

This game showed exactly why I'm always so hesitant to praise Jones, he always just seems to have a shocker of a mistake in him, I trust Smalling a lot more, I feel like Smalling did everything he should've done and I can't really fault him for anything.

Also what was Young doing for that 1st goal?

De Gea made the first mistake I remember him making this season, shocking kick out.

Lukaku and Martial were good for how much of the ball they got.

Why didn't we go for a 3 man midfield? We clearly needed more support there earlier on in the game.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: WTF happened after we conceded the own goal? I thought we actually played quite well for the 1st half an hour, very well at one point, but we were totally pathetic after that 2nd goal, did we even create a chance after that, our level of play just dropped off so much at the half hour mark. Absolutely spineless performance after that second goal, the only players who can hold their head up high cos they were decent are De Gea, Smalling, Valencia, Martial and Lukaku.

Aye. There's not much a manager can do when the players cannot do basic things right. His tactics were wrong also, but similar to the Chelsea game last year the start killed us.

We move on, and write this game off as a bad one.

More like one bad game from Martial and people can’t criticise the golden boy. He’s been good recently but that absolute garbage today was unacceptable. He needs to play with more throttle. I agree that 0 is harsh when others were just as bad but nobody was as bad as Martial in that second half.

It's central midfield not left back. I don't think it's unfair to expect a supposedly world class player to be able to put in a shift in more than 1 formation.

Chelsea losing 3-0 at home is the only positive to take from tonight.

What happened in that scuffle near Tottenhams end in 2nd half? The ball was hoofed forward but it looked like Dier grabbed/hit out at a United player? Never saw a replay of it

At least it demonstrates where we are still weak, and, the title race being long over, it isn't a terminal defeat. We still have work to do in preparation for next season. A couple of signings and some deadwood to move on.

Had a calm down before posting in this thread to make any sort of sense.

That was as bad as the City game earlier in the season, why? Pressing. United have been absolutely shocking when pressed for years now, regardless of the manager.

The majority on here knew we would be pressed so a lot of us opted for 3 in midfield to deal with it. Even the commentator in the second half said the same. If we all can see it, then why doesn't a world class manager see/do it? If we started with a midfield 3 of Pogba, Matic & Herrera we would've had a chance to get some sort of a result.

Another kicker was the absolute state of the goals we conceded. Same with the City result. Difference today was, Spurs completely toyed with us in the second half, they absolutely embarrassed us. Spurs of all fecking teams. In the entire second half when we had the ball if felt like we were playing with 9 men and without the ball it felt like we were playing against 14! Passing and just enjoying their easy game around us.

I was nothing but confident going into this game. Spurs haven't been great and Poch has a terrible big game record but of course we made them look like prime Barcelona. To think I actually thought we stood a chance of at least making City work for the title.

Everyone in that dressing room should apologies to Sanchez. He was the only one who looked like he gave a shit in the second half.

First time in a while I've been this frustrated after watching us. That was horrific. Defending an absolute shambles, no build up play whatsoever. When we were i possession it was slow backwards or long ball. Smalling and jones tonight my god. All i can say. Lukaku non existent. Bring on Saturday at home and lets hope jose gives them a kick up the arse. The fans who travelled down today deserve an apolgey and refund for that.

He's never been at his best there, I don't see why he should have to do a job that makes him ineffective, just because its close to the area he works best. It's infuriating seeing the Pogba at Juve, and even for us, having to play in a position that wastes his best attributes. It's fine against rubbish teams, but against quality opposition, it's suicide.

I don't get everyone's reaction. We lost and had a bad day, it doesn't undo all the good we've had this season. Today was just one of those days...

Concede 1st minute with a shambolic goal which puts us on back foot....Then as were finding our feet in the game concede another shambolic goal.

Performance all stemmed from there. 2-0 was a let off because they could have crushed us.

But I don't think we'd have seen that game or performance had we not started so badly. Either way we have been largely let off by Chelsea result.

So we dust off and go again Saturday, hopefully that bad performance will fire them up to work a lot harder in the next game.

This is still a work in progress and largely we have moved in the right direction. Bad results happen (even when we were a great team) so take it on the chin and move on.

One of the worst performances from a Manchester United team I have seen in my life. Truly shocking, and completely disappointing. Jose got the team selection wrong. He either vastly underrated Tottenham, or equally overrated the ability of Matic and Pogba to play as a two against them. The ease with which they cut through our midfield was disturbing, and Jose did nothing to correct it until it was much too late (not that we were any better once he brought another central midfielder on). Pogba’s performance was cringeworthy and he was rightly hauled off. There was no reason to displace Martial on the left side to accommodate Sanchez, but in fairness Martial was poor on both the right and left tonight. I felt for Matic to a certain extent. Although he wasn’t great, he was essentially tasked with playing midfield by himself, such was Pogba’s lack of positional sense, discipline, and effort. The back four were a complete joke. Jones will rightly get most of the criticism, but Young and Smalling were awful as well. I could go on, but what’s the point? No positives at all, in my opinion.

For me, the toughest thing to accept was simply the manner of defeat. As I noted in the match day thread, this is the kind of game that, being down 2 - 0 at the half, we would have won under Sir Alex. Tottenham were vulnerable defensively, but we simply didn’t have the desire, passion, commitment or willingness to get ourselves back in the game. We went out with a complete whimper. We really do lack leadership out on the pitch, primarily in midfield. Jose has to address this in the summer.

The players best learn from this, pull their socks up and move on. We’ve seen this before from many of these players, though. If Jose really is only going to be allowed to buy two players this summer, we can likely expect to see this level of performance again.

Boo!

I remember Ferguson doing something similar when we got berbatov and played all our attacking players against the scousers. After we inevitably got beaten, Ferguson said he'd never play them all together again.

So feck it. SAF was wrong, so was Jose and so was I when i saw the line up.

On a plus side, I've got sausage, egg and chips for tea.

Martial has been OKish in January against pretty poor opposition. Now again , just like Pogba, against decent opposition he was very very poor. It was like playing with 9 men with those two on the pitch. We should sell them both to Madrid for £200m and reinvest in a decent right winger and two CMs.

Watching a performance like that just baffles me. From the schoolboy ball watching of Ashley Young on the first goal as his man Erickson walks in to score to Phil Jones choice to use his RIGHT foot instead of an easy clearance with his left (even if he only taps the ball) like someone who just learned how to play the game. Then punctuated with a complete lack of urgency to get back in the game. The whole team looked hungover like they went on a bender last night in London. They were extremely lucky to not to concede 4 or 5 goals. They were lucky on that Valencia challenge not to have conceded a penalty as well. I just cannot believe the lack of professionalism in their performance and attitude today. It really embarrassed the uniform.
