Manchester United 4:0 Norwich City

Post-match discussion

Sat, 11 January 2020

Really good performance and a crucial 3pts going into our next run of tough fixtures. Ole and co got it spot on today, Norwich are a poor side but 4-0 is never a bad result.

Also was it true that there were some very loud and vocal anti Woodward/Glazers chants today? Further encouraging if true!

At least 5 or 6 different anti Woodward/Glazer chants second half... some repeated.

Also enjoyed “you can stick your fecking fan cams up your arse”.

Very encouraging and I hope it’s just the start and not a one-off

Very comfortable win with total domination apart from a couple of sloppy moments at the end of each half.

Makes a change to play with eleven men instead of ten and a con(e). 135 minutes of no cone, five goals and no goals conceded.
Mata very good game, a no.10 who has a brain, can control the ball and can even pass it to our own players.

Rashford, Martial and Greenwood all on the score sheets, Williams and Matic also very good games although no-one had a bad game.

 And so many on here not seeing the positives of what we are building, no patience. Williams was fecking brilliant again, Fred was excellent, Rashford looked very confident, Greenwood clinical, Gomes looked confident when he came on, really enjoyable, not just the performance and result but the fact there is so much emphasis on youth, watching United is starting to become fun again, does not always happen of course, it is inconsistent, you understand that, but build around that core of home grown players and there is a very good team there.
Don't get it twisted, we beat a very poor side that will likely finish bottom. I want nothing more for ole to succeed, but it's evident that he just hasn't the skills to take this club forward.

Whoever would have thought that we could overcome the loss of Young, Shaw, Jones and Lingard and still rack up a 4-0 win?

Great game. I noticed a tendency of high ratings aka “standout” performances for our fullbacks at good games. We actually have an analogy for McFred in FB position. Disclaimer: I don’t mean Williams and AWB a “unit”.

What strategy do you mean?

It wasn't a co-ordinated high press of the kind that wins trophies these days. Conventional wing back play really plus an exploitation of mistakes.

Mata is key when playing against these shite teams. I wouldn't expect him to start against any of the top 6 but he should be the first name on the team sheet against the rest of the league. He might not be fast but he makes up for it with good movement, smart play and good delivery...

One hundred percent agree, Mata was very good today, he no longer has the legs to play against the top 6-8 teams but the rest, he is a very solid option. Matic was good, but again he cannot repeat that against a better side.
I thought AWB was solid on the ball as well.
I like that we got Rashford subbed early, save those legs for the rest of the month.

It was actually a pretty big win for united.
I’m pretty sure I heard the commentator say we’ve lost three of our last five matches against bottom three opposition.
In that case whilst it’s easy to say it’s only Norwich, it’s a good thing that we’ve managed to stop losing to the bottom sides.
It doesn’t mean much for our season, but to get a big win at old Trafford is always nice, if we could get some consistency against sides like Norwich, we could still have a decent end to the season.

Patience, he is doing the right things, regardless of short term pain.

That's just it - he isn't. He's unable to field world class players or coach a cutting edge tactical system. Without those two things, we can still pan Norwich but we won't win any trophies.

People need to wake up. He's there mainly because the fans won't turn on him.

We won 4-0 and you’re posting this?

Awesome. Thanks man!

Because it's true and my memory is able to retain information for more than 24 hours. I like winning 4-0 too. But we won't win trophies this way. Winning and winning consistently are two very different things.

That's a gross oversimplification and a very naive attitude.
  1. There is more than one way to play football. It's a complex sport. As evidenced by us beating City in October. They play some of the best of that "co-ordinated high press" and we still ran them over. So - clearly, the reality is a bit more complex than what you make it sound.
  2. The style of play you are advocating for requires a world-class midfield. We don't even have a decent midfield, let alone anything to play co-ordinated high press at the top level. You may like it or not, but the reality is - things take time.

Nobody expects us to win trophies at this early stage of rebuild. That would be insane. Same for consistency - you can't have it with a thin and young squad. You may criticize the trajectory if you feel it is wrong, but you can't demand the end-result so early.

So. Quiet. On. Here.

Good performance, not sure why Fred and Matic haven’t been tried before but it looked good against a lightweight team there, far too much for Norwich but the real challenge is where those extra points are coming from to potentially unseat Chelsea in fourth.

Arsenal and Tottenham’s horror seasons have thrown a lifeline to United for their own, but there must be an unbeaten run with Ws at some point or this season will still be a disappointment. No CL = no top summer signings.

Oh yeah, definitely not enough of that on the forum these days.

Chelsea also has problems and they will lose points. But fourth position, or even comfortable top 6 is only possible if we add at least two quality midfielders in the winter transfer window. If that doesn't happen, we have no choice but to scratch this season results-wise and just chalk it under "training for the future". It will cause issues in recruitment - you are spot on. We won't be able to bring any top talent, even young, and will have to resort to "hidden gems".

4-0 win and the post match thread hasn't broken 4 pages. If we'd scraped a 1-0 win it would have been double. 15 pages if we'd lost or drawn.

Do we require any more evidence that this forum is now just full of moaning Mary's?

Too busy writing up their post match Liverpool essays in advance.

Lad, its Norwich

It's a game we will probably lose because they are a fantastic side, but the 'fans' will ensure that the following week will be a boring bloodbath on here. I'll wager the post match thread hits 10 pages an hour after full time, and it'll be vicious.

Lad, its Norwich

We cant enjoy the team we all love playing well and scoring goals? Or does it only count when it's a top team? It's a really poor reflection of the current fanbase on here

The match was not shown in the USA so that's another reason why there are not a lot of comments.

Good stuff today. We should be taking these results as a given, that's where we should be. Just feels good to be so dominant against cannon fodder for once, no dramas.

I’m with this guy.

What a ridiculous thing to say, it's pretty hard to field players you don't have. The squad is plagued by injuries and we've not been able to recruit yet this month.

Very good performance. Created lots of chances and should have had a few more goals. Mata, Williams and Rashford stand out. If only Mata could play like that in the hole finding space all the time. That was the difference today. Touch of creativity. We badly need it.

It's almost like fielding a different 11 every game due to injuries, fatigue and other reasons have an impact. It's not like Ole has the choice to play his best team week in, week out. Our best player has been out with an injury all season.

I'm not saying Ole will be the man to take us back to winning titles, but some context please? He's working under hard conditions with seemingly no help from the cnuts upstairs.

It's about averages though. City are having a bad season - it's hard to win three titles in a row - and they had a bad day. We can play our socks off sometimes and get some luck. But on average the table does not lie - and three high press teams (City, Spurs, Dippers) have taken top four for the last three years.

The style of play you are advocating for requires a world-class midfield. We don't even have a decent midfield, let alone anything to play co-ordinated high press at the top level. You may like it or not, but the reality is - things take time.

Yes it does take time, but it also takes the will to do it. We already have a world class midfielder who wants to leave. World class players will always come to play for good coaches playing good systems. We have to make this change in order to attract those players (or keep them in Pogba's case.)

Nobody expects us to win trophies at this early stage of rebuild. That would be insane. Same for consistency - you can't have it with a thin and young squad. You may criticize the trajectory if you feel it is wrong, but you can't demand the end-result so early.

The result (today) was great. Everyone likes winning 4-0. It is indeed the trajectory that is wrong. In so much as we are building anything at all, we are building the wrong thing with the wrong builders and for the wrong reasons. That is the problem. How many 6th places are we willing to put up with?

What a ridiculous thing to say, it's pretty hard to field players you don't have. The squad is plagued by injuries and we've not been able to recruit yet this month.

We don't have them (or a world class coach) because on the whole they won't come here because we don't have a project they want to be part of.

Indeed he is. They are the problem.

Was out all day and my mobile data had ran out so had no idea what the score was. I expected us to win but not by this big a margin. Very good result and seems like a couple of players put in some very good performances too which is encouraging to hear. Also was it true that there were some very loud and vocal anti Woodward/Glazers chants today? Further encouraging if true!
Already? It's not even the middle of January yet!

What it shows is how apathetic the fans on here have become. It is not about moaning, Ole in or Ole out, but how the Club we all support (over 30 years for me) is being run. One result, either positive or negative, swings the pendulum. At this stage we are asking ourselves what is the point?
