Newcastle United 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 11 February 2018

When I turned on the TV the commentators before the match said it looked as if Pogba was injured in the warm-up.

He played as if was injured , if he was why did he play.

Played the same formation as against Spurs, although a slightly better performance, it doesn't work quite clearly but still playing this formation to accommodate one player and that's not Alexis nor Martial. Play 433 or play Alexis at no.10.

Matic still not on form, Smalling had the nightmare today instead of Jones, booked for diving, fouling constantly and could have given that penalty away, looked like Young would give the ball away at any moment.
DDG had very little to do but we were too slow going forward. Could have easily won it despite being under par with Alexis and Martial missing chances.
Lukaku had quite a good game but nothing was going for us going forward.
Didn't understand Carrick coming on for Pogba, should have been McTominay and Carrick for Matic.

Slow to get going, one day we'll come flying out the traps and attack from the off and one day we'll play the formation we should.

As I eluded to when I said Sanchez can only play on the left, it seems his signing may have been achieved by promising him his favoured position.(otherwise it would seem obvious he would fill the RWF spot).

Well if thats true then I am flabbergasted. For 500k a week he shoud just shut up and play where he is told in order to help the team win trophies... and he has been quoted saying that.

Terrible performance throughout, both from the the team and the manager. Except Sanchez, no one had the desire to win the game. Pogba was strutting around lazily (fair play if he was injured though, that's on Jose). Smalling was terrible. Lingard looks like his usual self again.

The most idiotic decisions however go to Mourinho. It has been clear that Pogba doesn't work well in a midfield 2, why the hell does he persist with that shit formation, idk. Secondly, did we bring Sanchez to replace Martial? Play Martial on the left and Sanchez behind the striker. After getting Sanchez, there is no excuse left for Jose. We should be able to beat the likes of Newcastle easily.

We never play a midfield two. 4-2-3-1 is not a midfield two. It's a 'midfield five' with three midfielders more advanced and one of the two usually left to roam. Let's stop kidding ourselves, Pogba is not bringing his A game to the pitch lately. It is not about formation. We have seen him play brilliantly in the 4-2-3-1 formation many times.

That stank out the afternoon. Losing at Spurs is one thing but losing at Newfarceal...

Mourinho saying they fought like animals. Where was YOUR team's fighting spirit José? Dancing around on social media?

Mmmmmmmm, where does one start, you can't criticise Mourinho, you can't criticise Pogba, and you can't criticise Martial, mmmmmm, i'd best say nowt....

Lukaku, Jones and Sanchez at least gave the impression that they gave two sh*ts, the rest sadly going through the motions expecting something to happen, and not prepared to put that extra bit of effort in.

Oh yeah, and Shelvey, who apparently is crap was M.o.t.M

The Sevilla scouts, once they have defrosted will be laughing all the way home.

You could understand a high pressing team being tired, they have earned the right to be tired. I would love to be a fly on the wall at training and see how long they train for. What type of training it is and if they actually practice attacking and different situations if things are not going right.
Agree. It's very frustrating as I do feel this team is capable of better football. We have seen it in patches but not consistently.

I don't see a full post match meltdown here today. Perhaps we are just as jaded as the players seemed to be straight from kick-off.
Just another depressing disjointed performance with no real appetite to win.
Fergie would have blown a fuse and probably short circuited the local grid but it all just seems so ho-hum now.

I didn’t think we played that bad. NU players really played out of their skin. Teams raising their games against us again! Surprise surprise.

The problem is Pogba today. He was a liability throughout! Since the beginning of the game, he’s strolling and looking completely lost. Almost never back for defensive duties. Leaving Matic with too much to do again!!! He missed his duty in the set piece leading to the goal. Pogba needs to get his head right or he’s gonna a find the bench.

Lingard was poor today. His passes were poor.

Martial missing chances, Sanchez missing chances, shambles. Lukaku played well today. Sanchez played well but he’s left with too much to do as well.

Smalling and Jones back to being Smalling and Jones. Putting our defense and keeper under pressure on quite a few occasions. Those two can’t play with each other it seems.

We need to play McTominay next to Matic for a while if Matic can prove fit.

Looking forward to the dozen threads about how this and that should change, we are shit, Pogba should be sold, Lukaku should play for Swansea etc.

We've played like this many times before and won. We had plenty of chances today and the ball just wouldn't go in. That is football and Newcastle away was never going to be an easy trip.
Except it is for nearly every other bloody team in the premiership. :(

Where to sart after that joke of a performance.

Team attitude lets pass the ball back before we pass it forward, we make nothing happen by pressing the opponents into making a mistake.

Lukaku does nothing for the team, every 9 in the league with a quarter of his price busts a gut to get to the ball first trying to at least make the defender commit a foul. Complete liability.

Midfield Matic looks knackered another liability.

Pogba has lost his swagger and looks upset with where he is being asked to play another liability.

Smalling and Jones thanks but not good enough on the ball and a mistake waiting to happen. Liabilities.

Jose our once special one has become the broken one far to stubborn to adopt tactics to the players strengths.

Manchester United once a team to be feared now a bunch of pussies outfought and made to look clueless.

I have watched every minute of every game this season and see nothing to be excited about.

Awful. Their first win at home since October and it's against us?

This kind of thing happens with us A LOT.
A player who has not scored for half year...plays us and scores!
A team who has not won a home game in several months, plays us...and WINS!

I think a lot of the smaller teams/players tend to view MUFC as a cup final, so raise their game.

Not in desire....workrate.....defending.....passion.

Think about what you’re saying. It’s just punditry style cheap sound bites saying all that rubbish.

Desire ? How can you prove they had more desire ? If they had more desire they’d have won 6-0. Their only shot on goal produced a goal. We had loads that their keeper kept out. How can you measure desire on that basis ?

Work rate ? That’s rubbish too. What proof is there of that ? We had loads more of the ball which suggests we worked harder to get it and keep it. Defending ? Ok, they did because they had to. On that basis we worked harder in attack.

Passion ? What nonsense. We generally defended and attacked positively and with intent. There goal was a rare foray into our box that fell kindly to Richie. No evidence of more passion.

It’s too easy to say what you say. Watch it next time with the sound turned down and ignore all the unproven claptrap pundits come out with. If we’d scored twice in the last minute and won would you still be suggesting their desire, work rate and passion was superior ? I doubt it.

What utter nonsense. Our team is in last place for distance covered from the whole Premier league. We definitely lack the work rate either because of lack of desire or having shite fitness levels.

Sorry, on reflection yes we were great. Far superior to Newcastle in every way.
Just bad luck again. We must be cursed with bad luck!

We had plenty of chances to win it.
Their GK had a typical "Against Man United world class," performance.
Newcastle battled.
Poor mistake from Matic and Pogba for the free kick; watch it and they both freeze.
Lukaku played better
Over reaction. We move on.

The keeper really didn’t - he just made saves he was expected to make. Like Martial, everyone knows the wrong decision is to play the right corner - the right decision is to chip the ball or shoot when the keeper is on the wrong foot. To put it like this; if any of us had Martial coming at us like that, we would go for the bottom right corner 100 out of a 100 times.

Other than this, I can’t remember a great save. DDG made a world-class save however.

Yes....But it's been like that for 50 years or so and after 20 years when we could rise above it, it's now been four years when we can't....

But look on the bright side....Only another couple of years and perhaps they'll start treating us more like Huddersfield or West Ham....

No, our intensity is often so lacking that we let them raise their game.

The smaller teams have figured out that away from home we can be a soft touch. Nick a goal and we aren't ever getting back in the game.

We played too slow. Too many needless passes and not enough desire to force a mistake. I think we were good for a draw but we have moments of stupidity and sometimes the ball don't run for you. We need some high energy in this team. Sanchez has it but he often plays to deep. Martial has it but on his good days. Perhaps Citys winning has demotivated them somewhat in the league. Perhaps some feel we will get second place..that's ok..lets put all our energy/effort in the cups. If we do that, we will struggle. I think physically we're mostly fine it's just that the league as a challenge is over and the players need to wake up. You can't act like zombies and expect the ball to always run for you. That said, we didn't take our chances but their goalkeeper and their defenders has for the majority - one of those games....Maybe it really is just an unlucky ground for Jose. Onto the next.

And what was wrong with Pogba? He looks un happy with the football at all, he plays like because only he has too.

I am really concerned now we might not finish in the top four.

How? Look at the competition stumbling about like their laces are tied.
Pool may win today, but they'll draw 3-3 or 5-5 again more than once until the end of the season. Chelsea is ready to fall apart. Arsenal is Arsenal. Spurs are equally hard to predict as United, but that still leaves more than enough space inside the top 4.

This!

Also we are hopeless if we go behind. Desire is when you are well behind at Spurs and come back to win. We just seem to think we are beaten if we concede, that is a mentality problem.

I’m not on about across the season, I’m talking about today. Show me some evidence that backs an argument saying they worked harder today in ALL areas of the pitch. As for desire, well what says they had more desire ? It’s a nonsense. Take away an inspired debutant keeper and we win that about 6-1.

Hopefully thats the wake up call we needed before the CL.

Qith all do respect to Lingard, he needs to be dropped. Not because his not scoring like he did a month ago, but because the system doesnt work with him. We need an extra body in midfield so Pogba can go forward. Wecant be mad at Pogna for not playong like De Bruyna when he needs to be at the back of the midfield so Matic isnt exposed. And is not very good at that either.
Plus Shaw needs to start. Martial needs to return to the left. Enough with this. Martial earned his spot and shouldnt be getting this sh*t just because a new 'star' has arrived.

Jones has admitted they couldn't get themselves going. That is a problem. That also show lack of a leader, a good captain would be going round rousing people.

Another thoroughly gutless performance. Once again we never came close to hitting 5th gear. We seem to coast through games like we have nothing to play for but usually our better players make something happen. What is our style? What is our identity? That was utterly embarrassing.

Nonsense. Their keeper played well and made a good save against Martial.
If you think we could have won 6.1 you are delusional.
Yes we created a bit more that a normally abjectly hopeless newcastle team but they deserved the win as we never matched their intensity or workrate

Martial deserves to play on the left, we need to switch to 3 in midfield, we need to stay in top 2. Gonna be a difficult run-in. If we continue like this next season, I'd start looking for a new manager. Hope Jose finally builds his team after the summer.

Shelby is not the most talented person in the world but I'll give him one thing, he plays with heart and guts all the time. Sometimes it pays off and it did today.

Been saying for a while we hope he builds a team. How much more money does he need, How many more years? His tactics are ancient, football has moved on to a high pressured fast paced sport.

A team of 6-footers, it’s a travesty that we concede from set pieces.

I'm afraid it's been like that for a while.
We have such tall players but these oafs can't head the ball if their lives depended upon it.
In today's match, we definitely needed Fellaini. He'd have added fight in our midfield and raised the fighting spirit of our own players.

I think Valencia was the only player today who looked like he wanted to fight. The rest of the players, worked hard, but didn't show fight.

It does seem though that if any team (be it Huddersfield, Newcastle or a Championship side), turns up and decides to fight, they will beat MUFC. Unfortunately, in the "fighting" games, like today and Huddersfield, we were missing the one player who we have who is designed to combat players who want a fight - Fellaini!
