Liverpool 4:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Tue, 19 April 2022

Last night was a real low point; not because we lost so badly, but because the general expectation was that we would lose so badly. When was the last time that we went into a match with the feeling? Yes, we had players out, but that just serves to show how thin the squad is.

As it things could not get any worse, the circus that is manahester united are now the subject of a phone in on radio 5 live. Everyone picking over the bones of this once great football club.

I was willing to give Maguire a chance but he’s absolutely shite. It’s not even fully a confidence issue, if you look back he’s made so many mistakes and failed to carry out simple footballing manoeuvres or actions like meeting the pass or marking his man. He gets beaten so often, so slow on the turn, and the amount of headers he’s missed from point blank range is pathetic. To top it all off, you can tell he’s not a leader and it was even more evident when we could actually hear what was being said on the pitch when there was no crowd.

Hannibal gave the ball away for our 4th goal. Passion is great, but it can't be more important than competence
Even on that I’d say Maguire’s pass and Dalot’s cowardly attempt at a tackle was more incompetent. He ran hard, put himself about and always looked to make himself available for the ball. Put his teammates to shame frankly.

In similar circumstances SAF would’ve asked Park or Phil Neville to man mark Salah from the outset. Wan Bissaka probably could’ve been half decent if that had’ve been his only purpose for the game.

Did anybody else take advantage of the 13/2 offered by Ladbrokes on pool winning by 4 or more goals?

I did 3 nil . Nearly . Shameful lot hurry ip and get a guy in . And start shipping out the crap it's alot. .. 9 -0 aggregate score against the fecking scum . Shamefull

On a purely football perspective, we don't need to rile opponents and give them any further advantage they already have!

We really shouldn't be doing that one, there's lots of other stuff to harass them with but appearing to mock deaths from a national tragedy isn't acceptable, it was a disaster for football itself as well as one for a city / county /country.
100% agree with you. I think their fans know that some of ours will react which gives them a moral high ground arguement.

This was so embarrassing. 10+ years ago when Liverpool had a relatively poor squad, even when finishing around 6th-7th in the league, their team always put up a fight against us, always tried to make it difficult.

Our team today was happy to be bent over. It’s just unacceptable. Surely protests are in order at this point?

They don't care about protests as they'll still be getting paid. They'll start to care if the fans start boycotting matches and merch because that's what pays their wages.

But, ball playing centre back

At least Smalling would have smashed it into the stands.

Third and fourth goal yesterday came from misplaced passes from our central defenders. I don't care what people say, the Jones/Smalling partnership was a hell of a lot better than the two clown combo that played yesterday.

Maguire played an absolutely crap pass to him out wide. An £80m CB, under no pressure couldn't play a normal pass to a 19 year old kid. I'm not going to put too much blame on him for failing to control that given it was such a shit pass.

Liverpool scored one good goal.... the second

the rest came from major errors on our part....

Maguire's positioning for the first

Lindelof's pass and Maguire's failure to pick up Mane for the third

Maguire's ridiculous pass to Hannibal for the last

It was amateurish defending from us.... i cant remember a United defence being so poor.

As for Maguire.... ive never seen a United CB be so poor. Jones and Smalling never had seasons as bad as this. Even Rojo would have competed better though he was rash. Playing Tuanzebe this year would have been a better bet.

After 3 minutes 30 seconds, De Gea had his first involvement in the game... a no problem pass back to him from Phil Jones, and what does De Gea do? He controls the ball, and then under no pressure he attempted to pass out to the left-wing to Dalot, but instead of going to Dalot, De Gea kicked the ball straight out of play. It was a really easy pass to make to Dalot. De Gea didn’t make the pass.

Around 1 minute later (4 minutes 39 seconds on the clock) Liverpool scored.

To break this down in the simplest way possible:
  • De Gea’s first involvement in the match was him needlessly kicking the ball out of play
  • Around a minute later Liverpool scored

For anyone who thinks that De Gea’s distribution is NOT a problem, please be fair on the supporters who think that it is, and go and watch back from 3 minutes 30 seconds to 4 minutes 39 seconds of last night’s match.

The defeat last night was STARTED from De Gea.

Painful watch almost from start to finish.

I was (initially) pleased to see Phil Jones in the team, expecting him to play in midfield, with Matic and Pogba, patrolling in front of a back four,(that rightly or wrongly have played together most of the time under Ralf) and attempting to snuff out , at source, those accurate razor sharp diagonal balls that were bound to come from Thiago and Henderson in particular, and slice us up like salami.

Alas, for some reason Ralf played him as an additional CB in a back five, completely disorienting, Maguire and Lindelof (not that they needed much) and Dalot in particular got caught out of position time and again down that left hand side, only once did him being right-footed playing on the left, manage to rob Salah of the ball.

The players were for the most part sh*te, but so were the tactics, 'Blunting the Liverpool edge' was the best we could have hoped for, but there was only about 15 minutes in the second half when we got a kick of the ball, otherwise it was a walk over for the 'scousers'.

Have to say a word for our travelling fans, brilliant, in those 15 minutes in particular they tried desperately to rally the troops. I know I've been at Anfield in the past and its very difficult to make your voices heard when the locals are rampaging around... so well done to our away fans.

Not just that, there were two opportunities for De Gea to deal with the situation prior to the goal as well, both the ball over the top and ball into the box were relatively poor passes by Liverpool's standards and were both balls a competent goalkeeper cuts out.

I mean this is the nicest possible way, away support another team.

It's grim times, but you surely can't be a serious fan if you doubting your loyality.

We don't deserve to win everything just because we are united.

If other club fans had the same mentality, their be basically no other clubs existing as outside a couple clubs who get the success

This is such a tired and lazy argument, with respect. The wonderful relationship between a supporter and the club is certainly not a unilateral one way unrequited loveless transaction. This is what we have at United. You cannot constantly be let down by the club from top to bottom through a protracted period and not question why you continue to support that club without condition. The treatment of the supporters by this club is borderline reckless. You have absent owners are are clearly in it for the money. You have an inept middle management who are new in their roles and despite their best intentions, don’t know what they are doing, you have managers who, right or wrong, have been thrown under the bus by a large number players who are mercenaries and clearly do not care about the club.

No one is saying we have a god given right to win anything. But supporters do deserve to be treated with respect. This club has taken its fan based for granted for a while now. To justify undying loyalty because it’s “grim times” makes very little sense.

It was night and day the difference between the goalkeepers last night:
Alisson is a proactive goalkeeper, whereas De Gea is not.

There was even a moment from a cross or a corner where De Gea chose to punch the ball when it was so much easier to catch the ball. It was really strange, almost as if he was scared of getting clattered if he did try and catch the ball, so instead he just punched it away. In the nicest way possible to him, it showed that he lacks courage.

There are a lot of problems at Manchester United at the moment, and regardless of what anyone says, De Gea is one of those problems (whatever order of problem he is, he is STILL a problem).

Beyond embarrassing , the current squad just does not have the character to even compete in any pressure type games. It is bordering on criminal how the recruitment has been run at the club for the last decade that we have ended up with the rabble we currently have.

We can't even claim we have a proper rivalry with Liverpool(Or City) anymore, a real rivalry requires some degree of competitiveness. We are light years behind.

Absolutely, and you just know that these feckers got up this morning and didn't even feel shamed by yesterday. They'll be speaking to their agents about where they're going to play next season instead or working with their PR team to put out some shite on the socials.

Need a complete clear out. All of these players are tainted. I hope we're brutal over the next few windows.

He's the problem that a) would see the biggest immediate change on the pitch if he were to be replaced and b) he's the problem that we have a competent replacement for on the bench so frankly it's astonishing we still persist with him. And before people jump all over me I'm not saying Henderson is the answer but he's a much better fit for this team than De Gea is.

Would choose Heaton over Henderson every day. He is just one of those overrated British player.. If Dea Gea is the problem, then I guess the Earth is the problem as well.

Yeah the Heaton thing is just ridiculous and frankly not true. I'm not Henderson's biggest fan but ultimately he was exceptional at Shrewsbury & Sheffield United and every single one of our performance metrics considerably improved with him in goal last season; despite his really poor game against Liverpool (which btw De Gea has had two of this season). He's bizarrely got worse this season in the eyes of a lot of fans by not playing, which is odd because usually the opposite happens. If you can't see how much of an issue De Gea despite all of the statistics available and by the old fashioned eye test then I don't really know what to say, it is so obvious.

De Gea is not THE problem, but he is potentially A problem. If Ten Hag wants his United side to build from the back and press the opposition in the way his Ajax side does, then De Gea is one of many pieces that will need changing. He simply cannot play in that kind of side.

The sad thing with this fixture now a days is that back when we were at our best and liverpool were the poor side, this was never a fixture we just brushed them aside with ease year in and year out. No matter what trash team Liverpool had at the time they made it difficult for us to win. Not these lot. They’ve lost the match before it’s began

Painful to watch that. I honestly thought we'd lose by 6 or 7 after watching the first half.

Carrick was nowhere the perfect answer as interim manager but Jesus, we never looked so passive and defensively all over the place under him like we have with ole and Ralph.

Carrick was also the only manager that handled dropping ronaldo well.

I honestly believe we would have been in better position if we had kept him as interim and put ralf straight upstairs at the club

There is a hitlist and we actually need to force them out of the club, like genuinely force them to leave. Absolute charlatans. From Maguire to Rashford, get them out. The most dislikable, detestable bunch of absolute pri*ks we have ever had at this club.

Probably focusing too much on 2-3 specific errors as if we just stop those the game is much different. We have low 20% possession the whole time and would no doubt get picked off another way and be forced into other errors by the Liverpool players. They rushed and harried us all game and we couldn't deal with it or pass the ball. In other games yes but here it was a one sided demolition, we all knew it before kickoff, if we stop one boulder, another is coming to smash us.

The first 15 minutes of the 2nd half shows that we can still play but my god, what a spineless bunch we have.

Matic, Sancho, Elanga were the only players to come out with at least a bit of respect for me.

This is truly sickening...

Is it surprising when we have had ole and mourinho during this period with the weak inferior mentality of surrendering possession to liverpool with mid table tactics of just hoping we can nick something

This club has forgotten how to win and realized how to lose.
The only players I would keep on this squad are:

De Gea (and yes his distribution is a problem)
Bruno
McTominay
Fred
Telles
Elanga
Sancho
maybe Rashford but I think he needs to new team.

The good thing is, this summer is going to be a mental reset for this team. I just hope we make some good moves to get players in.

This made me laugh
You can’t expect a team to dominate for a full 90 mins.

Liverpool had the game won and were just in 1st gear when the second half started.
